We need to buy players this Jan that will do a job in getting us promoted next year. Ipswich basically did that, we should be as smart

The players we buy in January will be targeted to help us stay up this season. We won’t be going after players who aren’t ready for the PL just because they might be good in the Championship if we go down.

I’m sure this will be the case but it will also be very short sighted and typical of this regime, and no doubt leave us in a worse position when we are in the Championship next season, potentially with an embargo.

We have to do everything we can to survive this season. Targeting players who won’t help us to do that would not only be short-sighted, but also unforgivably cowardly.

I think back to when we were in the EFL under Pearson, it felt like back then the signings were above the quality of the league we were in which I feel is the way to go.

The problem of going for players to get you up the next season, is they wont be good enough the season after if promoted, that to me feels the more short sighted route.

Going for championship players when in the EPL is what yo yo clubs do.

How did Souttar fit into this when we bought him?

You need to have an eye on both.

What I meant, and I have said it elsewhere, the signings we make should both be financially (wages mainly) manageable

to keep in the event of relegation and also be willing to stay and have the right stomach for the challenge.

What won’t help but what will happen, is that we will chuck money and wages at has beens and players who think the Championship is below them which will **** us for next season.

That does mean that you have to accept that this means signing players that won’t contribute this season. But we need to be smart and have an eye on both and not risk the long term future.

Short sighted

Why would we buy any player this January that doesn’t immediately improve our first 11 and at least give us a shot at staying up this season?

Simple as it sounds surely you just buy the best players you can buy.

If we buy players now that aren't as good as what we currently have, and so don't improve us, then they equally don't play for us next season in the event of relegation.  In which case, why sign them?

Young, proven Champ level players who might be able to step up a division AND can at least challenge for the starting 11 are fine. But then that just links in to my opening sentence.

Because they're hard to come by. Because they wont want to join us. Because we cant afford it. Im not saying that shouldn't be a target,  but long term we are absolute odds on to be relegated and also, not able to make transfers when we're there. We need to start looking ahead for once.

I think we’ve done it again regards to having about 90m in sellable assets (Hermansen, BEK, Winks), but the replacements have been the problem with the gradual decline.

Jakub, Nelson, Alves and maybe even Cover will be good enough for a top end chasing Championship club. It’ll all depend on whether we can extend a couple contracts and weather a points deduction and transfer ban.

But totally fine to be laughing and joking with Pep and Haaland, eh
