That said, management has become very, very good in avoiding leaks until deals are done or as good as done (like with the Japanese left back mentioned above). Which is frustrating as a fan, but a good thing for the club as there is far less chance of a last minute hijack. Either way, I'm not expecting big things until we finalize the outgoing transfers of Nyakossi and/or Leysen, who will be the big money makers this window. Despite already having rounded up about 4M in sales of mostly redundant players (with the exception of Akimoto who was apparently homesick and really wanted to go back to Japan).

Drove up to watch the game. Very solid all over the board, with us being the better team for roughly 70 minutes until they went up 1-0 against the flow of play. 10 difficult minutes after that, but clawed our way back into the game and scored the more than deserved equalizer. Opoku very impressive again, just like Traoré.

I spotted that before you replied, KlaaZ, so deleted my post - obviously not quickly enough for you to reply to it! I thought it difficult for the same guy to play 2 matches a few hundred miles apart on the same day!

Beat Lommel 5-1 in our latest friendly. Game behind closed doors so no idea about the actual performance but it's a very solid result nonethess. For context, Lommel was promoted through playoffs last year after beating 1A team Dender in the final. They are part of City Group.

Was definitely second choice behind Carl Hoefkens but after weeks of trying NAC Breda did not let him go so picked Simons instead.

 

good thing about Simons is he wants attacking football. Since the Belgian Mickey Mouse league reverts to 18 teams (despite all clubs knowing it is a dumb idea) half of the league will have nothing to play for from January. OHL very likely to be in the middle (as was the case last six seasons or so) so at least we’ll see some goals… prefer to lose 4-5 than win 1-0 in such cases.

Belgian Goalkeeper Jelle Van Neck (22, Marseille B) supposedly on the radar with Mechelen also following

It's always going to be better, doesn't matter who replaces him. The guy has been a 2 year liability and the fact that they are going to sell him for a big profit is downright insane.

Yeh showed too little at OHL but a) I believe he can do better and will still improve, and b) good strikers are expensive and we have not had luck in the last few seasons. Last one to score 10 or more in single season is Gonzalez (2022-23)

 

But I also believe in Traore, not sure if he will play alongside Yamada though

Goal bonanza against Heerenveen after our five day preseason camp. 3x45 minutes, 343 formation. Lost 6-4 in the end after being 0-2 and 2-4 up. Lots of good stuff, obviously heavy legs after five days of hard work which explains why we didn't hold onto the leads but some very good performances and lots more entertaining than last season. 

On the transfer front, Ikwuemesi is nearing his exit as Derby County and Birmingham both want him apparently, with Derby rumoured to have offered 3.5M GBP. If we pull this off, I'll be insanely happy as he's been nothing but a liability for most of the past two years. We're also on the verge of signing Emmanuel Addai, another free agent.

After Lawrence the second player who was supposedly talking to bigger clubs than us but decided to move here anyway. Some very good work from our sporting director on paper. Five signings after this guy, all free or solid loans. 

Nyakossi is also on his way out, we're apparently talking to Lille about a permanent transfer. Hopefully the jackpot for him.

Second guy we sign despite interest from far bigger clubs than us, Csepregi doing the lord's work this summer with zero transfer budget!

Question is what will it lead to… what does everyone here believe is needed to afterwards say we had a good season?

 

I mean we’re mid-table team and never finished higher than tenth… are we happy with say 7th or 8th or need a cup run on top? What if we end 12th… 16th?

At this point? A calm season with some attractive football and ideally a few upsets at home against bigger teams. So anywhere between place 8 and 13 would be perfectly fine considering the financial constraints we still face this year. 

There are obviously no guarantees but I'd be absolutely baffled if we end up lower than 12th by the way, let alone 16th. Zulte, who we topped last year, have lost pretty much all of their key players this summer. Beveren has lost the manager who made them champions and their goalkeeper and has almost done zero incomings to strengthen their squad. Lommel is probably in an even worse state, having finished fifth in 1B last year and only brought in one new player so far. RAAL is a circus with what, fourteen or fifteen new signings now, and a very overrated manager to top it off. Westerlo lost half of their first team this summer and although they already brought in a few replacements, they still have a lot of work to do and it will take time to gel all those new players together. Cercle Brugge really struggled last season, finishing well below us, and lost a few of their key players as well. 

I'm 99% sure we can keep at least five of those teams behind us, but probably all of them.
