Wesolowski wants Gudjonsson's role

James Wesolowski aims to cap his fight for full fitness by replacing Joey Gudjonsson in the Leicester City midfield.

Wesolowski views the departure of City's player of the year as an opportunity to stake a claim for a regular spot next season.

Gudjonsson, who scooped a clean sweep of the City end-of-season awards, is heading to Dutch side AZ Alkmaar.

His absence looks like leaving a gaping hole in the City midfield. But Wesolowski, who is currently recovering from a broken leg suffered in the February victory at Brighton, wants to grasp the opportunity provided by Gudjonsson's departure.

“That's the aim,†said Wesolowski, who last month signed an extension to his contract that will keep him at the Walkers Stadium until June 2008.

“That's the way I am looking at it.

“There's an opportunity there for me to take when I come back next season. I am a similar type of player to Joey, I like to get stuck in.â€Â

It was the second time in six months that Wesolowski has broken his leg. The first came in a pre-season friendly with Celtic just as the youngster was breaking into the first-team squad.

He eventually made his debut in the home defeat by Cardiff before playing in wins over QPR, Wolves and Brighton.

Wesolowski said: “When I first broke my leg, I thought that I would be able to come back from that, which I did for a while.

“Unfortunately, I broke it again. That wasn't too good for me.

“It's been an experience that will hopefully help me out in the future.â€Â

He added: “It was good to get the opportunity to play a few games and help the team out. It was really good for me.

“But, when I broke my leg a second time, that was difficult.â€Â

His manager Robert Kelly has warned City fans against expecting too much from 18-year-old Wesolowski when he does return to action.

Kelly said: “He is fully aware that he has still got a lot of work to do.

“We look forward to him playing a part next season, although we shouldn't lose sight of the fact that he is still only a teenager.â€Â

I think we still need a new player to replace him

What? Run around like a headless chicken, be crap at passing and tackling. I think he's too good for that!!

I'm not fully convinced that Kelly will use Wesolowski nearly so readily as Levein.

I'm not sure I understand you there?

Didn't kelly play him at every possible oportunity?

Or is it because Kelly is considering sinning and buying someone over the age of 18? So he has no faith in young players anymore?

I think it's because Kelly's been reminding everyone that Weso's still only a teenager - indicating that he perhaps won't play every game.

Although, if you think about it, Rob could just be continuing his formula for success - 'keep the pressure off'.

If he goes around telling everyone that will listen, that Weso is still young and that maybe he's not fully ready yet, he's effectively keeping a lid on expectations. If he can keep expectations lower, Weso isn't under as much pressure (from the fans for one thing).

Rob has always said that removing the pressure was what helped turn the team's fortunes around - so it's quite likely that's all he's doing here

I think that tactic was used by levien when fryatt came, he said he said "he's young he's not the saviour" He was the saviour

When played alongside Hume is when it all kicked off really

Kelly also said he didn't want to have to rely on Fryatt to play every game as he was still only young and look what happened, he played every game. Kelly is using a tactic where he is taking the pressure off, he's fair. If the players whatever age they are play well and don't show any signs of struggling then they'll continue to play.

Correct me if i'm wrong but Wesolowski was on the bench when Kelly took over as he rested him from the midweek game against Plymouth (first start after a long lay-off would indicate this). He then came on for Williams the following game and was then first choice until his injury. Kelly said at the time what a shame it was that he got injured as he would be a massive loss to the team.

I'm confident Wesolowski will play regularly next season if he's fit, even if Kelly intends on using him sparingly he'll find it hard not to play him because the lad is that good.

He's just taking the pressure off Weso, he has had 2 nasty injuries and he might be putting pressure on himself to get back quickly and play. Kelly is just perhaps calming him down, it will all be ok I reckon.

I think you're right on both counts. It is a great strength of Kelly, keeping the pressure off, but I think he will be cautious about playing Wesolowski too much until his strength builds. God knows how many times I cautioned Levein about bringing the lad back too soon and then expecting too much of him instead of going carefully. It is not just the leg has to mend, it is the whole body including the mind. Confidence can only be built over time, step by step.

You can **** off with comments like that! :D Up to it? The lad was born ready. Plenty of players have suffered broken legs even multiple ones and recovered, his second one was a small fracture not shattered like the first one was. Relax, Wesolowski will be the best player you've ever witnessed in a Leicester shirt.

Ric 'Frankie goes to Hollywood' Flair

When Weso comes back (and I hope he wont be rushed like last time) he will be one our most important players next season. Id rather he came back later rather than sooner though if it means he'll be injury free all season.

I warned last time that we should bring him back gently so certainly we need midfield reinforcement. I would still like to see Levi given a chance though because we could go spending money on more of the kind we've got already - and most of them haven't got anything like Levi's ability.

You didn't need to warn Thracian, most sensible people realise that coming back from a serious injury needs to be taken at a gentile pace. Unfortunately those in charge weren't sensible because his leg should not have broken like that again as it did.
