Looking for a job in the U.K. Film Industry

Yes, I'm looking for a job in the film industry in Europe. I'll be back home in a few weeks.

It's a rather nerve-racking transition period, tellya.

With the help of Jay and Kerry, a fellow Scouser student at Vancouver Film School VFS, I've contacted a few British Film Production Companies, inquiring about a job:

- Baby Cow Productions, Manchester (Steve Coogan): No vacancies (I actually sent the mail to Steve's wife (?), Heather, but she was so nice to hand it over to an assistant, which resulted in a short and very formal reply)

- Flechette, Glasgow, Scotland

- 421 Productions

- Brickwall Films Ltd, London

- Nik Jaw Films, Wrecsam, Wales

- One-Six Productions, London

- Vertigo Films, London

ITV is short of jobs, so does Channel 4 and talkbackthames doesn't even state their E-Mail address on their website (!!).

Two other TV stations in Switzerland have responded with a "no current vacancies" to my job inquiry and out of the 12 mails I sent to Swiss Film Production Companies, 6 have replied and apologized for not being able to offer any work this Summer/Autumn.

Jeez, this is really ***ing me off. Hope the remaining companies get back to me with some more cheerful news. I'll also contact some more people in Germany and - if necessary - Austria (lol!!!).

Is it recommended to send out blind working requests or is this rather unheard of in the U.K.? And how likely is it for British Companies to employ workers from outside the U.K.?

Does anybody know some more companies I could send my CV to?

Jay?:) Anybody else?

Is that making films or taking part?

From what I'm told there's loads of work to be had if you've got a big chopper - but I'm not sure if that was for making editorial cuts or for other reasons.:whistle::whistle:

Wrecsam?

Sure you don't mean Wrexham?

If you want to go into the Welsh vs. English spelling debate, that's alright.

Whatever. It's just the name that NikJaw has on their website.

I'm just looking for work in either Switzerland, Germany or the U.K. Where exactly doesn't matter, as I'd appreciate any working experience (preferrably a few months on one or two productions/series or as an assistant in a production office).

Canada and the States are tough and there's only three choices:

a) You marry

b) You work under the table

c) You apply for a Green Card

The U.K. and Canada have special agreements under the Commonwealth laws and it's a bit easier for people from both sides to get a job in the other country, unlike for Swiss peeps like me...:rolleyes::ph34r:

Not really a debate, if you're speaking English it's sort of weird to use the traditional spellings. Even I wouldn't, really. Mainly as point of reference - if I said I used to live near Pen Y Bont everyone's just going to be confused. :P

And how many Swiss place names could you spell perfectly were he to spout a list of them for you?

Clearly intended to help... if you're going to send a job application or something of that sort to somewhere I'd imagine that spelling their address correctly is probably advisable. I'm not applying for jobs in Switzerland. Anyway, I was just trying to help.

Ok mate.

Was just trying to help you out. If it's on their website, who are we to argue? :P

Best of luck with it anyway!

I reckon he could do the dodgy dubbing over the top of British porn flicks for the ever growing Swiss Porn Film Market.

Has neutral ever been so sexy?

Seriously though - I jest.

True!

My girlfriend is paid awfully and she has to fake it everytime I'm lucky enough to have a fumble.

Poor.

Always thought you were a man who was into his muscles/mussels rather than his clams.

OLE!
