Bye bye Sven

As our most sucessful manager leaves the national team, I think whatever the outcome of the tournament we owe him a big farewell.

I may never live to see a world cup lifted ~ but I lived to see us smash Germany 5-1. Ab-so-lute-ly bloody magnificent. Cheers Sven!

C'mon England! :D

The Germany 5-1 demolition was still to this day one of the best footballing moments i've witnessed. Infact there was about a year's spell under Eriksson where we were provided with some magical moments, I have a sneaky feeling there will be more to come starting very soon.

Defo the 5 - 1 win. It made me cry  and for once I wasn't pacing the room shouting at the TV. The only other match that made me cry was the play off against palace when Stevie scored in the final seconds but that was more through relief the mental torture was over.

Has sven included walcott in the hope that we'll remember him for good reasons, a legacy, a bit like blair is trying to do?

Anyone that does this, never deserved to be manager in the first place.

Take the Germany game away and what has been achieved? FIFA changed the substitution rules because he belittled international friendlies and he has blown it at 2 major championships.

However my personal favourite is:

Belfast 2005

Sir Alf Ramsey?

The way England ran out of gas against Brazil and Portugal still rankles a little, as well.

Funny.

Sucess as measured by wins, draws and loses. We all know he hasn't done the biscuit when it count, we all know he has bottled crucial tactical decisions when it really mattered...but aside from Alf, what the fudge has been inbetween? Nothing, that's what. A bunch of clowns.

Venables gave us a glimpse of what international footy could be like, but he buggered off and then showed that he isn't that good at national managership.

I'm from the camp that says friendlies are a waste of time, a joke, so I don't care that Sven would blood 22 players in a game. So what? So FIFA got arsey, they're a bunch of idiots anyway.

Remember Greece, that wasn't Sven. That was 10 players bottling it. The penalty shoot outs - overpaid players not being good enough. If we are to be sucessful over the next four weeks then it will be down to members of the squad stepping up to the plate and taking their share of responsibility.

Sven is foreign. Sven is not perfect. Sven loves the laydeees .. but he is also the most [Americanism] winningest manager we have ever had, and that is an achievement.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. Having said that, we can now use it and ask ourselves exactly how Graham Taylor (completely out of his depth tactically), Glenn Hoddle (did David Icke rule himself out prior to Glenn's appointment?) or Kevin Keegan (just completely out of his depth, period) ever got the job.

From my memories of England matches, I'd rank the 5-1 alongside Paraguay in '86, Holland in '96, Belgium in '90 and the last gasp qualifying heroics against Italy and Greece.

The 5-1 was a gas, though. :)

We were shyte under Keegan, we have qualified for the major tournements and reached the latter stages in them. Sven has done OK, better than many previous, on a par with most. Ramsey won the world cup so you can't better that. Its a thankless job, everyone knows better than you, even winning is not always enough, your private life is not private, and the press want you out and their choice in. Although the money is good and you seem to get plenty of shags, so I would give it a go.

The 5-1 win in Germany was the pinnacle, not just the points, but the revenge and the humiliation of Germany in their own backyard. Essence.

This will be a tough world cup, the days of really easy games against small nations is past, even these have top class coaches who can make life difficult tactically. However, I think we are in as good shape as we have ever been bar Rooney. We have a chance but we have to play to our maximum potential every single game.

World Cup - I love it.

Yea - it's there with Italy'90 and Holland/Scotland in Euro 96 ... oh, and maybe the final 60 seconds of the Greece qualifier. Oh, and the sending home of Argentina and the first half against Brasil four years ago.

I'm sad that I lost my VHS documentary that follwed Taylor through the WC qualification campaign. Did anyone see it [not my tape that is]? Kids at school should be made to watch it to see just how fudged up the national side was allowed to get. Then they should have a presentation by Butcher to demonstrate how international footy players cok it all up.
