Lineker's Left Foot

Late 1970s/Early 1980s...

Recommended Posts

We may have all loved era's like 'Britpop' and the 'manufactured boy-band' phase but I personally feel that the late 1970s/early 1980s was one of the best era's for music. This was a time when synthesiser was being introduced and groups were experimental.

You had so many different genres ranging from Electro (Afrikaa Bambaataa, Freeze), Disco/Soul (Odyssey, Herbie Hancock), Ska (Specials, Selector, The Beat), Goth/Indie (The Cure, Echo & The Bunnymen), Electronic Groups starting out (Kraftwerk became very popular, New Order, Talk Talk, Propaganda) etc. These were groups who all challenged the face of music and I even enjoyed New Romantics (possibly not Duran Duran. Spandau Ballet BUT more Japan, early Human League). Even Stevie Wonder was still playing some good records and reggae was also about.

Great era... anyone else agree???

I do agree - but it was all the self indulgent synth driven 20 minute long prog rock songs that sporned the Punk generation to reclaim music

Late 70s produced:

  • Pistols
  • Clash
  • Damned
  • Ramones
  • Adverts
  • Cortinas
  • Drones
  • Generation X
  • Johnny Moped
  • Killjoys
  • Lurkers
  • Magazine
  • Iggy & the Stooges
  • Motorhead
  • Penetration
  • Ruts
  • Buzzcocks
  • Saints
  • Slaughter & The Dogs
  • Stiff Little Fingers
  • Elvis Costello
  • Stranglers
  • UK Subs
  • X-Ray Spex
  • Vibrators

To name but a few - I know there's tons I've missed out

I concur with most of Deathsides selctions - whereas most of Swiss Tony's choices would send me to the suicide booth pretty quickly.

Therefore, with no balance of power, I declare the cusp of the 70's/80's to be a no score draw on the chart tombstone of time.

Every era has its good and bad points. As I was growing up during this time, it is one of my favourites, and brings back happy memories...

Also, some excellent post-punk bands: Mission of Burma, Kleenex (aka LiliPUT), Gang of Four to name a few... plenty of kick-ass roots reggae and dub musicians during that time, too.

not to mention..

Cockney Rejects

Blitz

The Business

Infa-Riot

Bad Brains

Red Alert

Splodgenessabounds

The Blood

Newtown Neurotics

Attila The Stockbroker

Never got into the skinhead Oi! thing - Although I did like Blitz in their early days

Attila is a great guy (and an FC St Pauli fan)

Bad Brains and Newtown Neurotics are two of my all time favourite bands

"Coz I dont wanna be sittin' in a cell wif yoo,

...so go and screw!"

Now there's lyrics ;)

Recorded a Cockney Rejects cover for the 3rd Extreme Noise Terror Peel Session - But we did change the title and lyrics around a bit

I'm Not A Fool became I'm a Bloody Fool

and the lyrics were changed to include such one liners as

I'm a nazi skinhead - I'm a bloody fool
