lookwhaticando Posted 31 July 2006 Posted 31 July 2006 Incorrect mr Pingpong, it's 172. Well, 128.7 to the nearest decimal is what I got just by performing individual operations in the order presented. Which is where billabob went wrong. 12x12 = 144 - 14 = 130 + 63 = 193 x4 = 772 /6 = 128.666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666... But you have to perform multiplication/division before you perform addition/subtraction. So 12x12-14+63x4/6 = 172 12x12 = 144 and 63x4/6 = 252/6 = 42 So you've got 144-14+42 = 172. Order of Operation does matter

Order of Operation does matter BEDMAS.
lookwhaticando Posted 31 July 2006 Posted 31 July 2006 BEDMAS Interesting result I must say. I'm suspicious of that 14 + 42 being subtracted from the 144, it doesn't seem right somehow. If all you have is - and + it makes sense just to go from left to right in the order presented. 144 - 14 + 42 = 172 Or 144 + 42 - 14 might be the true meaning in BEDMAS ... still resulting in 172.
Steven Posted 31 July 2006 Posted 31 July 2006 First mistake was to make the fraction a decimal when it wasn't needed! Second mistake was adding the 14 and 42 - you operate left to right. So you do 144 - 14 before you add the 42 (or indeed add the 42 to the 14). If that makes sense No. I was following operator precedence.
lookwhaticando Posted 31 July 2006 Posted 31 July 2006 No. I was following operator precedence. Google Calc will know http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q...earch&meta=
lookwhaticando Posted 31 July 2006 Posted 31 July 2006 As far as I know... How long have you been a foxes fan? What was in that box?! What vehicle do you drive, if you drive at all? If you do drive, have you run anyone over? (perhaps one of your sisters to end a particularly nasty row?) Do you know what 144 - 14 + 42 is?
cisono Posted 31 July 2006 Posted 31 July 2006 That's too ambiguous - what were the unspeakables? Creepy crawly insects? Dead rabbits? 1980s Playboy mags? Details details. 1) yes 2) yes 3) not to my knowledge! PS: Are 1980s Playboy mags different from those published before and afterwards?
Steven Posted 31 July 2006 Posted 31 July 2006 Google Calc will know http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q...earch&meta= What is the answer to : 10 - 3 + 2 Check this out.
lookwhaticando Posted 31 July 2006 Posted 31 July 2006 1) yes 2) yes 3) not to my knowledge! PS: Are 1980s Playboy mags different from those published before and afterwards? Couldn't say. I picked the 80s because the girls probably had funny lookin' hair
Steven Posted 31 July 2006 Posted 31 July 2006 BEDMAS = 12x12-14+63x4/6 = 12x12-14+63x.667 = 144 - 14 + 42.021 = 144 - 56.021 = 87.979 Perhaps it should be 172.0 <_<
lookwhaticando Posted 31 July 2006 Posted 31 July 2006 What is the answer to : 10 - 3 + 2 Check this out. It's confirmed my suspicion. The answer is 9. Reason An addition sign on the left followed by a subtraction sign on the right can be done in any order. For example, 8+4-2 = 12-2 = 10 is the same as 8+4-2 = 8+2 = 10. The reverse is not true, however. In 8-4+2 the subtraction must be carried out first, or a wrong answer results. So for 144 - 14 + 42 The subtraction must be done first. 144 - 14 = 130 130 + 42 = 172 I think in BEDMAS, essentially once you're down to addition and subtraction, you just perform them left to right in order. You can perform the additions first, but you add them to the first number in the sequence rather than the preceding one. 144 + 42 = 186 - 14 = 172
lookwhaticando Posted 31 July 2006 Posted 31 July 2006 Perhaps it should be 172.0 <_< To be honest, your original answer gave me a bit of a fright. I'm studying for a degree in mathematics, and I thought I'd completely blown the order of op. myself. I was unsure of my ground In all fairness to myself, I don't do a hell of a lot of 'practical' mathematics, and order of operation isn't something I was formally taught I don't think. Obviously we'd heard of it, but I can't ever recall it being laid down as a law. Probably a result of my constant changing of school

The People's Hero Posted 31 July 2006 Posted 31 July 2006 In a man, what do you look for? Is it a lively, humorous, chauvinist, loud-shirt wearing adonis? If so, get in line. Owwww!

Bert Posted 31 July 2006 Posted 31 July 2006 Perhaps it should be 172.0 <_< So Berty was right all along??

Creepy crawlies and mice remnants (bleah) Vauxhall Cavalier 2.0 sri (need to change car soon) Haven't run anyone over yet, although I sometimes feel like doing so (I did have a massive physical fight with my sister no. 2 quite a few years back now - the event has become part of our family history! It was that good...) Yes.

I'll get me coat :pinch: How old were you and your sister when you kicked six bells out of her? I'm assuming you won, obviously ... I like how you added at the end 'it was that good' - that's first class. I assume that means there was plenty of blood and a few broken bones?

I did win, of course (she is a weakling). I remember pouring my tea onto her dress (after too much provocation on her part - about 5 years of it), lots of running around the house, pouring water onto each other's beds, more chasing around the house, throwing water at each other and around in the corridors at home and... then the actual physical fight. This was disappointing, as she is kind of weak and not a worthy enough opponent. The best bit was: I had her lying down on the floor, head down (but not so close to the ground that she would drown), she was completely immobilised (through a kind of judo hold)... when my dad walked in and looked so taken aback. His face was quite a picture! No bleeding noses that time (not until a month ago when a guy in my team whacked me in the nose), but the house looked a mess. We both got told off and were grounded for a month. But, boy, was that worth it!

And I thought girls were supposed to be so much more mature by then Still, Epic stuff. I'm adding you to my list of people not to cross. I don't fancy a beating like that. I'm essentially useless in a fight.
