Anyone know the inside story on Darryl Hair?

All afternnon and evening comments are being made about him (such as 'Hairs always been a disgrace'). Everyone seems to be skirting around the issue, but what is the big deal? Is he a big fat racist? Why doesn't someone just come out and say it!

Hair gained notoriety after repeatedly calling Muttiah Muralitharan for no-balls for chucking. He's also been rumoured to be a bit of a "homer" in the days when umpires could officiate in their own country - he gave loads of Indian batsmen out LBW in a test against Australia once.

This whole thing is a complete ****-up. Thankfully, it's beef between Hair and the Pakistan team, unlike 1987(?) when Pakistan/England relations basically went down the toilet courtesy of the Shakhor Rana/Mike Gatting set-to.

Hopefully they can work this out and get the game back on tomorrow. I'd like to see Engalnd make a real effort to get the game on, even if it means we end up losing. This sort of thing does test cricket no good at all. With South Africa calling off their tour of Sri Lanka, the last thing we need is another series marred by controversy.

Given the Pakistani's reaction today, and Hair's high-mindedness, there's probably more chance of seeing Lord Lucan opening the bowling for England in the first Ashes test this winter.

Last I heard, sometime in the early 80s on Not the Nine O'Clock News, he was playing centre-forward for Bristol Rovers

there seems to be a big history with Asian Cricketers and Daryl Hair not just Pakistan they have all made many protests India, Sri Lanka etc about his decisions and attitude over the past few years, they have also made an official complaint about him at the last test!!

it was Hair who decided that the ball was tampered with, which seems to have been overshadowed BUT the umpires check the ball at the fall of every wicket as this happend only 15mins before he made this decision!! and he could see no sign of it then!!

IMO if it wasn't Hair then this would never have happend maybe the Pakistanis were wrong but Asian cricketers feel very angry at his actions and I here he went into the dressing room and refused to answer any questions about why he changed the ball however as he was calling them cheats and Skys 30 odd cameras have been unable to find any evidence whatsoever of ball tampering and the ball has not been made available for anyone to look at it seems as if they may well have been justified in their belief that the only cheat was wearing a white hat and coat!!

I have also heard rumours that betting odds in the far east jumped to 250-1 during the tea break from very short odds and the dropped back down soon after.

i suppose all the racist accusations will be flying about again by a team that considers itself like caesar's wife

they refused to accept an umpires decision ( whether that decision was right or wrong is irrelevant).

they refused to continue to play and quite rightly were judged to have conceded the game

can you imagine in football if every time a ref gave a wrong penalty decision all the players walking off and refusing to play? i don't see that footballers would get any sympathy or understanding

I agree GG, the rules of the game stipulate that the umpires decision is final. If Pakistan had an issue they should have played the game and then made a formal compliant afterwards.

Now we have a situation where the premiers of Pakistan (Prez Musharaf) is getting involved!!!!

The umpires have been trigger-happy.

First they have accused Pakistan of ball-tampering without producing ANY evidence to back up this claim.

Then they refused to acknowledge the Pakistan protest at this and instead abandon the game.

To add insult to injury, they then award the game to England!

All these actions may have been strictly legitimate within the laws of the game. But they completely disregard the wider interests of the sport and those who pay good money to watch it either live or on Sky.

When one umpire's ego is allowed to over-ride the wishes of both teams, managers and boards, as well as the ICC match referee, who all wanted the game to restart today, then the sport is in such disrepute that it may not easily recover.

complete and utter nonsense

umpires and refs in all sports have to make decisions as they see it, and its ridiculous to suggest that teams can flounce off the field of play after what they consider to a bad decision

pakistan should face further disciplinary action for their disgraceful behavior!! it is they who have shown blatant disregard to the paying public

i am also concerned by the outragious arrogance of the pakistanis in their belief that they should not even be suspected of any misdemeanour , who the hell do they think they are,

throw them out

It's not a normal decision is it. Surely you can see that? If they left the field after a poor LBW decision was given you would be absolutely right in youre criticism of the Pakistanis. You're just not grasping how big a deal it is to accuse a team of cheating.

of couse its a decision a ref can make in any sport

if a soccer player were to breeze through a defence and was sent flying by a defender , and then the ref got it wrong, did not give a penalty and sent the player off for diving, he is effectively saying the player is cheating .

even if it is the wrong decision, and everyone in the ground saw it as a genuine penalty the ref has made a decision that the forward cheated and sent him off, and that decision has to stand , the discussions wait until after the game

would it be ok for the rest of the team to refuse to play on, ? of course not

and i think you can make up your own interpretations of what anyone says ;

if i was talking about an english team who had behaved like the pakistan team i think you would read it just as i wrote it, but your "right on " attitude won't allow you to judge it that way

To be fair, it is very different. There is cheating in every game of football ever played. It is a part of the game. Cricketers do not cheat. If ball tampering was taking place in every game of cricket you could excuse the umpire making a mistake, and the players would have no right to complain as it shouldn't be a part of the game. Footballers can not complain when get mistakenly called for diving when they do it week in week out anyway.
