Foxes Fans Save Up For Players Of The Future

Craig Levein with Market Square Branch Manager

Rani Banning

Foxes fans are being encouraged to boost their

savings and help find the Leicester City

footballers of the future.

The club today (Tuesday) officially launched a new

dedicated savings account for supporters - with

funds from the scheme to be channelled into

supporting the club's Youth Academy.

Launched in conjunction with the West Bromwich

Building Society, the new Foxes Super Saver

Account offers fans an excellent rate of interest

and a wide variety of club benefits and

promotional offers.

Chief Executive Tim Davies said: "This is an

excellent scheme which we feel will prove very

popular with supporters.

"As a football club we need to provide substantial

investment to continue to allow the club to

develop the cream of Leicestershire footballing

talent.

"We have teamed up with the West Bromwich Building

Society to launch a Foxes Super Saver Account

which benefits the club as well as supporters."

Fans receive an attractive interest rate along

with a host of incentives from free match tickets

for early account openers to Megastore and Walkers

Stadium discounts, plus a monthly free prize draw.

The club will receive an annual payment equivalent

to one per cent of the average account balances

over the year which will be used to support youth

development.

Tony Dubberley, General Manager (Sales) West

Bromwich Building Society, said: " As a Society we

are delighted to be associated with Leicester City

Football Club. This club has an outstanding

reputation on and off the field and I know fans

will flock to support this scheme."

Foxes Super Saver accounts can be opened at the

Leicester branch of the West Bromwich Building

Societ in Market Square, Leicester.

All supporters will receive an information leaflet

at Saturday's home game with Reading at the

Walkers Stadium when the scheme will be officially

unveiled.

The ultimate lifeblood of any football club lies

with the development of its youth policy.

And, over the years, Leicester City have been

blessed with true world-class players who have

graced the international stage with distinction.

Gary Lineker and Peter Shilton are two local boys

made good who grew through the Foxes ranks.

Emile Heskey also graduated through Leicester's

youth scheme and into the English national squad.

In the current City squad, Matt Heath, Jordan

Stewart,Tommy Wright and Richard Stearman have all

come through the Academy with honours and into the

first team squad.

Don't use Alliance and Leicester. As much as I hate to say it they are a disgrace, so unhelpful and I've had so many problems with my account. Both the people on the phones and the people in the branches seem to work by this principle:

"It's not my problem"

A little off the topic but who cares..

To be fair, West Bromich Building Society doesn't pose much of a threat to Alliance and Leicester. ;)

CB - Go with Barclays, I've had no problems with them. ;)

Co-Op bank!

Barclays are evil, stay away :o

I agree with you there - I had a fixed 1 year bond with them that I took out last August and which matured in August this year. When I took out the bond I was told that a few weeks before it would mature I would be sent a letter explaining my options and how I could withdraw my money. Needless to say I didn't receive any letter and when I went into the branch in town the woman was extremely unhelpful and her attitude towards me was appalling. It was disgraceful and I won't be using them again unless they have an amazing interest rate or give me something worthwhile for my money ;)

I know it was announced a while ago but I e-mailed Peter Jones to find out some information about it to help me decide whether I should open one of these savings accounts or not. This was his reply:

24th January 2005

Dear Jonathan

Thanks for your letter about the Foxes Super Saver Account, which I was

delighted to receive as it shows that our supporters are taking notice of

this new initiative. First of all, I should explain that the account was set

up by the West Bromwich Building Society at our request. We did speak to

Alliance & Leicester, who ran similar accounts for us several years ago

before they converted from being a building society to being a bank, but

they told us that they were no longer able to provide an affinity account so

we had to look elsewhere.

The West Bromwich have been developing similar accounts for other clubs for

some years, and our research showed that they provided one of the best

products and that their Leicester branch had an ideal city centre location

at 75 Market Place. Once we had an agreement with them, we met with all of

the supporter groups to obtain their views on the provider being the West

Bromwich, and how money raised should be used by the club.

The supporter groups were supportive, and indeed the Foxes Trust quoted this

on our launch flyer given out at the Reading and Rotherham matches (and

subsequently on their page in the Fox fanzine). All groups were keen that we

support the Youth Academy, which matches Craig Levein's first wish when he

joined us as manager.

The benefits to the club are that we receive an annual payment each year,

equivalent to 1% of the average annual balances held. It sounds complicated,

and individual accounts perhaps don't make much of a difference, but if lots

of supporters open one we can see that the Youth Academy will receive

substantial amounts. If we look at similar clubs, Stoke City earned over

£700,000 last year, and Ipswich Town £530,000. These have built up over

time, but could make a real difference to us.

The benefits for you are summarised in the attached folder, in terms of the

interest rate, megastore voucher and monthly prize draw - you've probably

seen the programme advert about winning David Connolly's shirt as the first

prize in the draw which will take place at the end of January. In addition

to the benefits, which are the best of any of the 40 or so clubs having

similar accounts, if you were to open an account before 31 January, you can

also claim two free tickets to the next home match against Crewe Alexandra

on 5 February.

You will need to go into the West Bromwich branch to open an account, and to

take some identification with you. It is probably best to check exactly what

you need to take with them, on 0845 456 7450. I can tell you that the

minimum balance for a 15 year old is £25, which will rise to £100 when you

are 16.

Thanks again for your interest. I hope to see your name in the prize draw

list in the not too distant future.

Thank you for your continued support.

Good of him to reply so quickly but I already repect him as a person as I've met him a few times before.

If it can generate that much cash for a club then perhaps it is something to look at.:unsure::rolleyes:;)
