"He is technically well-balanced, is a good size and a threat in the opposition's box. Does anyone know why players such as Stearman, Porter etc have dropped off the international radar? I know Logan hasn't been called up for a while, neither has Dodds... but the first two mentioned have done well in the first team, is this because the club/manager doesn't want them playing more matches, or because the England-youth managers don't think they're good enough anymore? (which I certainly don't think is the case, especially with Stearman).

I've mentioned him since last Spring as a potential attacking answer to our midfield problem and watching him against Cardiff last month it seemed clear he has continued to make progress. He's had lots of experience at Chelsea and now Leicester. Rudkin's assessment is spot on and another point is that he's around 5 ft 11 and can win a few headers. I've only seen him half-a-dozen times but on each occasion I'd have him ahead of Hughes any day. PS: I'm quite sure Stearman and Porter haven't dropped off the International radar but are more probably between age groups U19/U21, though I'll stand correcting.

The reason why Stearman and Porter are now not really getting a loo-in for England is because they are too old for the Under 19's (even though they are only 19) and there is rarely ever any Under 20 games. It's a challenge for them to break in to the Under 21's. The same for Dodds.

Louise Posted 5 October 2006 Author Posted 5 October 2006 I can't see Dodds getting into the U-21s when he doesn't even play for the first team and we don't have a reserve team, he might as well have dropped off the planet. As for Stearman/Porter, does anyone think Taylor would pick them? That sounds a bit conspiracy theory, but Fryatt also hasn't been picked since he's been here (even when he was playing well).

None of them are good enough yet. Stearman has been on stand-by twice. Fryatt although was good last season, still had players like Carlton Cole, Darren Bent, David Nugent, Cameron Jerome, Leroy Lita, etc to compete with.

Ric Flair Posted 5 October 2006 Posted 5 October 2006 All of those are better than him. Exactly. It's very hard to break in to the Under 21's unless your at a premiership club or you play club football for the Under 21 manager. Or you have alot of hype about you. Fryatt is a good player and potentially very good. But he's played for a lower league club and then come to a mediocre club and to get in for the Under 21's would be very difficult.
lookwhaticando Posted 5 October 2006 Posted 5 October 2006 Not at all surprised about Mattock and Chambers. They're the future. Future senior England Left Back and England Striker. Mark my words.

Ric Flair Posted 5 October 2006 Posted 5 October 2006 Has Andy King been playing for the Under 18's much this season? Not seen his name featured much in the reports this season? I know he's a good prospect, I hope he can make it.

I know he's a good prospect, I hope he can make it. I saw Andy playing against Cardiff in the 8-0 thrashing and I think he's been in most of our six match unbeaten run. Andy looked an excellent prospect. Cardiff simply hadn't got the pace to deal with City and, apart from scoring, he and Tommy Tejan-Sie totally bossed midfield. A chap on the side who watches all the youth matches said the pair are an excellent foil for each other with Tom filling the gap when Andy moves forward. What really impressed was the close passing and support, much of which went through those two who also showed some impressive close control skills when boxed in on the flank. With Gradel, McKay and Odihambo threatening goals for fun and Chambers on the bench, Cardiff were just torn to shreds and 13 goals wouldn't have flattered Leicester. To think someone on the forum questioned recently whether City's youth team were so much better than other Championship sides. I think they're averaging five goal victories or something very close.

Thracian As you kniow your stuff regarding the youths at Leicester - realistically (bias aside) when do you think we'll be seeing these chaps in the senior side - will I be waiting for about 5 years before we may be quite good - or is it only a couple of years away ?

Squad wise, the sooner the better in four-six cases. Right now Leicester have some pretty poor senior players and some excellent under 20's and a point about the young ones is that they are used to playing together and linking up as a team. Our team at present has no fluidity whatsoever. None of the five youngsters already through - Logan, Stearman, Wesolowski, Porter and O'Grady - have let us down overall. In fact quite the contrary and Logan and Porter were among the fans "best players" over the last one or two months. Add more and there would be no reason for gaps in the team between defence, midfield and attack. People talk about loan signings and guys like Farrelly but I'd have King over Farrelly (or Hughes) anytime in midfield and would expect more goals from him than the other two put together. If we had better seniors then the case might be different. But only Mccarthy, Kisnorbo, McAuley, Nils, Kenton. Williams, Fryatt, Tiatto, Hume, Hammond, Low and Henderson would be retained by me. All seem capable of blending with the youngsters. The five established youngsters would bring the squad to 17 and four more would go to Gradel, King, Sheehan and Dodds. I don't think the authorities would allow people like Chambers and Odhiambo to play yet. I would move all the other seniors on (6 of them) and use any money (probably from Maybury and Hughes) to perhaps make a couple of signings depending on performances before, in the spring, introducing Chambers to the squad along, probably with Odhiambo, depending on his date of birth. I am perfectly happy that team could serve us well. GK: Logan/Henderson; RB: Stearman/Kenton CB: McCarthy/McAuley/Kisnorbo/Nils; LB: Sheehan/Nils/Tiatto/Kenton RW: Hammond/Gradel/Low; CM: Hume/King/Weso/Williams/Tiatto; LM: Porter/Tiatto; CF: O'Grady/Fryatt/Hammond/Hume/Dodds/Chambers. Good cover, good balance, good fluidity, good attacking potential, solid defence. And slightly cheaper to run. I wouldshed another two/three players from the above come January.
Matt Posted 5 October 2006 Posted 5 October 2006 Reason Stearman ain't been selected yet this season is because whenever he has played for us so far this season he has been shocking!
Thracian Posted 5 October 2006 Posted 5 October 2006 Reason Stearman ain't been selected yet this season is because whenever he has played for us so far this season he has been shocking! Let's only go as far back as Colchester. He made two game saving headers in the time he was on and attempted to attack more in that short period than Kenton did for the whole of the match. Against Macclesfield he played his part in one of City's best attacking peformances this season and he did little wrong in his short appearance against Southend. He had a bad start, there have been various suggestions as to why, but some players haven't put in one good performance as yet.

But that doesn't excuse Stearman's slow start to the season either. He'll get back to normal the more he plays, and he'll look sharp and solid again soon, but the fact of the matter is he, like so many others, has been disappointing thus far this season. Which is why we are in the predicament we currently find ourselves in.

Thracian Posted 5 October 2006 Posted 5 October 2006 What's that got to do with him not being selected for the Under-21s? Nothing. I was just reminding Matt that he's not been all bad, especially recently. Just that he had an awful start to the season as most of us seem to agree.
Louise Posted 5 October 2006 Author Posted 5 October 2006 Personally I think Stearman only had two bad games this season. Unfornunately those performances coupled with the rumours/lies about him being a 'big time charlie' and the bid for him from Sunderland seem to have turned people against him.

Unfornunately those performances coupled with the rumours/lies about him being a 'big time charlie' and the bid for him from Sunderland seem to have turned people against him. It's time he was given his starting place back. Kenton for all his experience and sound defending isn't good getting forward and with Nils on the left it means we have no attacking full-backs to support our wingers. I would rather us play wing-backs if Kelly wants to keep Kenton in. Stearman would suit that role of right wing-back easily and Porter or Tiatto would be fine on the left. Stearman is still our most acomplished youngster we have, if he replicates the form he had lasts eason for the rest of this season then he'll be regarded as one of the best young defenders outside the premiership. Get him back in.
