john_lcfc Posted 9 October 2006 Posted 9 October 2006 hi post all your problems in here for the boffins to answer from the heart of leicestershire (foxiles aswell). My problem my mouse (an old fashioned roller ball) is responding but whatever direction i move the mouse/rotate the ball. the mouse onlly moves up and down. weird but it wont move side to side for shit. hence i cant access anything or do anything on my main "working computer". i am posting this from my laptop but this has none of the software for what i want to do tonight. please help.
Daggers Posted 9 October 2006 Posted 9 October 2006 Remove the ball and look at the rollers, they will have crud on them. Clean them with a finger nail. Tomorrow morning, go to a shop a get an optical mouse.

Going to porn sites and having your HD loaded with trojans and worms? Loads of applications installing themselves into memory upon boot-up?
cisono Posted 9 October 2006 Posted 9 October 2006 Large quantity of picture files? Music files? Porn? Going to porn sites and having your HD loaded with trojans and worms? Loads of applications installing themselves into memory upon boot-up? Translation: -check what is loading at start time (usually too many things) -ensure you are up to date with your antivirus -use anti-spyware and anti-adware
Monk Posted 9 October 2006 Posted 9 October 2006 Large quantity of picture files? Music files? Porn? Going to porn sites and having your HD loaded with trojans and worms? Loads of applications installing themselves into memory upon boot-up? I have plenty of HD space, and have the most up to date Norton. Barely any porn, unfortunately and it doesnt bring up pop ups. Task manager has nothing unusual on it, and I've run adaware and a full Norton scan I have Norton Ghost, wonder if thats stirring sheet?

If you go to the processes tab, what is using lots of resources? Anyway, the insidious things don't show up on task manager (or resemble system processes).
Monk Posted 9 October 2006 Posted 9 October 2006 Theres some strange stuff on my msconfig startup programs. One was just blank = DODGY. OK too much porn then. Can anyone reccomend a decent anti virus software which doesnt leak viruses like our defence leaks goals?

Have had problems with it in the past (including grinding my PC to a halt). I run AVG (the free one) you can get from www.grisoft.com. It auto updates every day and you can set it to autoscan each and every file downloaded as well as run a daily full scan (if you so wish).

Monk Posted 9 October 2006 Posted 9 October 2006 Yeah i really cut down the stuf fon ms config. I will try the AVprogram suggested, and remove Norton and see what the effects are. If not that then I reckon it might hae some ventilation problems, that or the HD is screwed
john_lcfc Posted 10 October 2006 Author Posted 10 October 2006 i get loads of pop ups when i first log on?

Try the System Recovery CD and put the laptop back to the factory built version... And then be careful in the future with downloads, software installed etc!

Caused problems on my pc workstation here at work.

3pts4awin Posted 30 October 2006 Posted 30 October 2006 seems like alot of folks have trouble knowing what virus protection to get. i dont know of one person who has scanned their pc with avg and found something more than twice in six months. if your really hard up, fine go for the free ones, but atleast download several and use one to scan per week (make sure you disable the others). avg, avast, antivir personal, kaspersky beta, neither are brill. you can download a free month version of panda's 2007 platinum at microsoft marketplace, as many other free versions of norton and mcafee, but trust me, you get what you pay for. its nearly xmas, treat yourself. free spyware protection. ad-aware se personel, avg anti spyware, cw shredder, spybot search & destroy, windows defender, these are all good, theres even a ad-aware 6 which tracks more than its big sister.

Nothing wrong with AVG imo. Been using it for 3/4 years. Better than Norton (which slowed down my PC to a halt). I would recommend not mixing too many antivirus programs though! It is however possible to use AVG, spybot, ad-aware and spyware blaster together. No antivirus is ever going to be enough if the user does silly things!
The People's Hero Posted 30 October 2006 Posted 30 October 2006 AVG is quite good. Norton is fine in itself but it just doesn't get on with any other applications and is pretty demanding on system resources. McAfee is my chosen trade off at work where I need to be seen to be taking good precautions. It's fairly intuitive in terms of usage, doesn't conflict with much else and does what you want it to, not what it wants to do. Having said that, I don't think it's much better than AVG. AVG is free. McAfee requires purchasing and continued licensing payments.

No antivirus is ever going to be enough if the user does silly things! i didnt advocate mixing antivirus programs at the same time. use several, but only enable one at any one time. not all paid or free anti virus programs find every virus. spybot, ad-aware and spyware blaster are not anti virus programs. you can run as many of them as you like. microsoft anti spyware actually put spyware on my pc. TPH, you can download mcafee, norton and many more anti virus programs free at microsoft.

I know. But people who are not very good with computers may find that difficult to do (or forget and then panic!)... spybot, ad-aware and spyware blaster are not anti virus programs. you can run as many of them as you like. microsoft anti spyware actually put spyware on my pc. I am well aware of what they are. And it is not true that you can run as many of them as you like. There is a history of cross-detection (problems) among some of them. It doesn't happen all the time, but it has happened!
