Ultra Posted 11 October 2006 Posted 11 October 2006 England's performance in Zagreb tonight must rank among the poorest in living memory, worse even than last season's shocker in the six counties. The players never looked comfortable with the 5-3-2 formation, which gave far too much responsibility to Frank Lampard in central midfield. And, true to form, he yet again failed to deliver. He was so appalling he made Gareth Williams look like Maradona in his prime! The schoolboy errors which cost both goals will take some living down. Even Scotland couldn't produce anything as bad as those! The manager's nadir was when he failed to notice Ashley Cole carrying a clear injury and substituted three other players. Not even Sven was as fcukwitted as that! Tonight's shambles illustrated how many cretins we have working at the FA to have preferred McClaren to a proven winner like MON. Expect plenty of calls for Beckham to be brought back, especially by those who soon forget the number of times HE went missing in big games!
Joe. Posted 11 October 2006 Posted 11 October 2006 Yeah, 3-5-2 obviously didn't work. Why didn't we play Wright- Phillips? He would have ripped their left back to shreds surely? I'm sure there will be calss for beckham back but I'm pretty sure he won't actually come back
Wycombe Fox Posted 11 October 2006 Posted 11 October 2006 I don't know what you're all worried about. Stevie Mac has got us into 4th place in the FIFA rankings behind Brazil, France and Argentina and ahead of Italy, Germany, Portugal, Spain etc etc so we must be OK...right? Errrrm...NO! Crock of s**t rankings!

Crock of s**t rankings! I don't think we'll be 4th when the rankings next come out. In fact, we'll be lucky to make the top 10!
davieG Posted 11 October 2006 Posted 11 October 2006 Yeah, 3-5-2 obviously didn't work. Why didn't we play Wright- Phillips? He would have ripped their left back to shreds surely? I'm sure there will be calss for beckham back but I'm pretty sure he won't actually come back With Neville and Cole in there it was more a 5-3-2 which immediatley gave them the initiative, not that they neede one playing at home. We obviously went there for a 0-0 that was the sole purpose of that particualar formation and players. Unfortunately they weren't even any good at defending even with that set up.
Thracian Posted 11 October 2006 Posted 11 October 2006 Thank God I stayed home. Shameful that was, but those responsible have no shame - just the same worn cliches and excuses for their brainless incompetence.
Maybes Posted 11 October 2006 Posted 11 October 2006 England are overated. We have great quality PREMIERSHIP players in the team but they can never perform in a professional way when playing for the national side.
Floating Fox Posted 11 October 2006 Posted 11 October 2006 This thread is awfull. Why does everyone think we are going to win EVERYTHING?!!?! what makes you think that?!
Thracian Posted 11 October 2006 Posted 11 October 2006 We couldn't win a solo game of pass the parcel!
Maybes Posted 11 October 2006 Posted 11 October 2006 This thread is awfull. Why does everyone think we are going to win EVERYTHING?!!?! what makes you think that?! Look at the players we have at our disposal. Look how they perform......
Ultra Posted 11 October 2006 Author Posted 11 October 2006 I trust those who insisted on having an English manager are feeling suitably pleased with themselves this evening..
Thracian Posted 11 October 2006 Posted 11 October 2006 I trust those who insisted on having an English manager are feeling suitably pleased with themselves this evening.. What do you suggest, bring back Sven? And with a name like McLaren I imagine his roots are in Scotland and his brain's in the sodding ground with em.
MC Prussian Posted 11 October 2006 Posted 11 October 2006 Well, the 2-0 was mostly Robinson's fault, even if the part of the pitch was bumpy there... Thing with all England squads in the last 20 to 25 years is, that they a) lack a decent manager b) lack one or two players who can keep the morale up and encourage the others, YOU LACK A GOOD CAPTAIN c) are overpaid d) are under massive attack from the English press, no matter what result they deliver. When they do good, it's a miracle. Whenever they fail (and that's too often the case), it's a gatling gun. RATATATATATA, watch out in the trenches! Btw, we lost to Austria. Again, we lost to Austria.
l444ry Posted 11 October 2006 Posted 11 October 2006 Interesting to see some people criticise the 3-5-2 now it has failed for England, whilst advocating it as a remedy for Leicester's ills. Just goes to show that if the players aren't good enough you can play any damned system you like and it won't make any difference. Personally I think McLaren was a mug to play that system for the first time against our major group rivals and away from home. Wonder if the messiah Venables warned him against this folly.
Wils Posted 11 October 2006 Posted 11 October 2006 I didnt see the game as i was playing myself, but from what ive heard it was pretty bad. Mclaren really wasnt the man for the job one feels.
Suffolk_fox Posted 11 October 2006 Posted 11 October 2006 I think McLaren might well be the man for the job. However, I would probably drop the entire first 11 (with the exception of Robinson. I think he played a blinder, and that bobble was freaky). Teach them a lesson! Why not play Shaun Wright Phillips from the beginning?? He always rips the defence apart!
Wycombe Fox Posted 11 October 2006 Posted 11 October 2006 Just heard Steve McClaren interview on the radio. Word-for-word he said "The manner of the defeat was probably disappointing" What does he mean by 'probably'? It was certainly and definitely disappointing!! That's like saying "The Pope is probably Catholic"

You've totally lost the plot my good man. MON was the man for the job, but the FA didn't have the courage to pick him. He isn't English and he'd want to run the show (same reason they didn't pick Clough all those years ago)

Wycombe Fox Posted 11 October 2006 Posted 11 October 2006 The pope is Catholic? That's new to me, Ted. I said he probably is
Bert Posted 11 October 2006 Posted 11 October 2006 The thing that bewildered me tonight was why change formation against the team that pose the biggest threat to us away from home, the teams such as Andorra is where you try out tactics and formations. We only had 3 attack minded players to start off with, Gary Neville never looked comfortable either, he should've change dit half time. Michaek Carrick, £18m?? Always tried to play the clever pass, but always took faar tooo long on the ball. We just didn't have enough support in attack tonight.
Wycombe Fox Posted 11 October 2006 Posted 11 October 2006 This piece from Phil McNulty of the BBC sums it up well. http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/606/A16165730?s_fromedit=1 Liked the bit about Carrick, something along the lines of 'if he was any slower he'd fall asleep on the ball'

Carrick = wank, basically. Can't wait for Hargreaves to come back - we need him!

That's like saying "The Pope is probably Catholic" Steve McClaren doesn't do victories - But if he did, they'd probably be the best victories in the world
