Tommeh Posted 12 October 2006 Posted 12 October 2006 linkage Looks like Theo's gonna get his chance again (not that he really had one the first time!), Would love to see Agbonlohor in the first team aswell as the form players in the premiership given a start i.e Andy Johnson and woodgate or the ruturn of Becks.
lildave3 Posted 12 October 2006 Posted 12 October 2006 I'd imagine Theo will be called up but only play 20 minutes or so in the Holland friendly. I can never see Beckham being called back in under Mclaren to be honest. I hope Micah Richards is called up personally.
Daggers Posted 13 October 2006 Posted 13 October 2006 You have to get the right people on the bus going in the same direction and that's staff and players. That boy McClaren is a genius, isn't he?! He's right, there's no point having people on different buses...or worse, on the same bus but going to different bus stops. Just imagine if the staff and players were going on the same bus but in different directions. Heaven forbid! Cancelled a fact finding tour of the USA to look at more Premiership players for the next five months...the bloke is a ****ing liability.
Cheese Me Posted 13 October 2006 Posted 13 October 2006 He was never going to be a good choice - I just hope he doesn't cost us the chance of qualifying for Euro 2008 - that would really ruin my summer in two years time. Still, at least I wouldn't have to go through the disappointment of losing on penalties again.

If he's going to piss about picking differnt players left right and centre just because the fans and media tell him to he may as well quit now. He aint ready for this job its so much bigger than anything he's taken on before. Say what you want about Sven, for all his faults, he knew his team, he knew how he wanted to play, he stuck to it and he got us to three quarter finals doing it his way.

He's quoted today as saying there was no one English with a CV as good as his (talking about before he was appointed) and didn't know why the media hadn't picked up on it. Can someone tell me if there is footage on Youtube of the moment he got hit on the head?
Mort Posted 13 October 2006 Posted 13 October 2006 If he's "brave" enough to dump Beckham (and lets not forget that at least Beckham can claim to have been the main influence behind 4 of our 6 goals in the world cup… that said it makes sense to keep him out of the first 11 for the time being), he should dump underperformers like Downing, Carrick and (for the time being at least) Lampard. At the same time I’d suggest that players like Crouch and Phil Neville should not be in the squad either, Neville done ok but nothing to warrant his retention and Crouch has only performed well against derisory opposition, both deserve some consideration but neither earnt the starting places they’ve enjoyed thus far. A number of players in the under 21’s should be given consideration, Walcott and Agbonlohor should certainly be considered but Nigel Reo-Coker has to be the prime candidate with Lampard in such persistently bad form at the international level. With Hargreaves our for the short to medium term a holding player needs to be found, while there is no one who’s really as good as Hargreaves, Carrick is not the player to fill that void a more aggressive, physical player is needed and the only obvious choice would be Scott Parker or potentially Ledley King though I’d be inclined toward Parker. As for formations stick, for the most part, to the 4-4-2 (with Diamond) it’s easily understood by the players and serves both attacking and defensive play equally well, a second, more defensive, formation I’d suggest would be [deep breath] 4-5-1 with the right players, and implemented effectively it can work and could be very useful as a defensive measure. My suggestions for the squad would be… Goalkeepers Paul Robinson Chris Kirkland Robert Green* Defenders John Terry Rio Ferdinand Wayne Bridge Ashley Cole Garry Neville Jamie Carragher Jonathan Woodgate Midfielders Steven Gerard Nigel Reo-Coker Aaron Lennon* Owen Hargreaves* Shaun Wright-Philips Joe Cole* Scott Parker Kieran Richardson Strikers Wayne Rooney Darren Bent Jermain Defoe Andrew Johnson Stand-Bys Gareth Barry Sol Campbell Frank Lampard David Beckham Wayne Routledge Theo Walcott Peter Crouch *~ I know their injured but for the sake of argument I’ll include the best squad I can think of.
lildave3 Posted 13 October 2006 Posted 13 October 2006 My squad would be: Robinson Foster Kirkland Neville Richards Cole Bridge Terry Rio King Carragher Lennon SWP Cole Downing Hargreaves Carrick Lampard Gerrard Rooney Defoe Johnson Walcott
Ultra Posted 13 October 2006 Posted 13 October 2006 When everyone's fit, this is what I'd go for: Goalkeepers: Paul Robinson Chris Kirkland Robert Green Defenders Luke Young John Terry Rio Ferdinand Anton Ferdinand Ledley King Ashley Cole Jamie Carragher Wayne Bridge Midfield Aaron Lennon Steven Gerrard Owen Hargreaves Joe Cole Kevin Nolan Scott Parker Kieran Richardson Strikers Wayne Rooney Michael Owen Peter Crouch Theo Walcott Dean Ashton Andrew Johnson Surely not even McClaren could fcuk up a team with that much quality in it?
lildave3 Posted 13 October 2006 Posted 13 October 2006 Few interesting choices there Ultra. Anton, Nolan and the amount of strikers for a start. I don't think Anton will be anyway near the full squad for a couple of years, although i would like him there. Nolan i think is a quality player but i can't see him getting in, there is just too much competition for places in centre mid (unlike leicester) As for your SIX strikers, i think that would be hugely ambitious! Although i do like your addition of Ashton, i fogot about him but he would be a player i would pick.
Ultra Posted 13 October 2006 Posted 13 October 2006 Anton had a couple of decent games for the Under-21s. He's not yet at the standard of his brother but he could be useful. He could also fill in at right back if need be. Gary Neville looks well past his sell-by date. I'd give Nolan a go on the basis that he couldn't possibly be any worse than Lampard or Carrick in recent games. As for the strikers, the chances of all six being fully fit at the same time are pretty remote, so I had to give a little insurance, especially if we're looking at a 4-3-3 formation to give us extra firepower.

Im a big fan of Micah Richards so i would choose him over Anton to replace Neville, certainly long-term replacement anyway. Although i said that about Glen Johnson....
Ultra Posted 13 October 2006 Posted 13 October 2006 Richards still has a few rough edges. I'm not convinced he has the temperament to step up to the full squad just yet.
lcfc_jme Posted 14 October 2006 Posted 14 October 2006 What makes anyone, including Steve McClaren, think that if he cannot get it right with some of the most experienced players in the world that he is just suddenly by magic get it right with a bunch of untried, unproven, inexperienced kids?? The step-up from Under 21's level is pretty huge, and I'm not so sure a complete overhaul of the side is necessarily the route we should be taking. It seems as though McClaren is trying wayyy too hard to distance himself from Sven and it is now bordering on ridiculous

How will youngsters prove themselves and gain experience if they're not picked? As Wayne Rooney proved back in the day under Sven, if you're good enough, you're old enough. Older players can become complacent and lazy, as we've seen in recent England games, and should know already from watching the FOXES!

No, not ever. Drop Lampard as well, he has had far too many chances to prove himself. SWP should start, he always causes problems when brought on as a sub, why not play him from the start? And I have mentioned this before, put Lennon on the other wing. Get some crosses in!

Lampard has had far to many chances and never performs it's obvious to me although I do believe Mclaren is a very poor tactician that the main problem is the players themselves they just don't seem to have any pride in playing for their country anymore!! The likes of Lampard who to be honest hasn't had a good game for England in at least 2 years proves this!! the fact that about 6 of them have released post world cup books shows were their priorities lied during the summer!! I wonder if the FA are sat round the table looking at what O'Neil has already done at Villa and the way every player is playing for him are thinking..... we really f**ked up giving McLaren the job!!!

I really shouldn't post anything football related at such late times during the night. Ermm yeah I'd give the younger lads a run out in the upcoming friendly against Holland (they're a decent side - it'd be a good test of how the younger lot can handle themselves against decent opposition ) and if they're good enough, play well and look comfortable, I see no problem in starting them in qualifiers. That's the sort of football the National team shouldn't be playing. We've got the players who, with the right balance, should be playing high tempo, in-your-face attacking football and absolutely mauling the sort of teams we're coming up against. I don't know wtf is up with Lampard but he is absolute sh!te when playing for England. I also don't know why McClaren persists with Downing like he is good enough to make the cut at international level - quite simply, he isn't. My England midfield would have Joe Cole wide left, SWP/Lennon wide right with Gerrard and Hargreaves in the middle. If that wouldn't work then I really don't know an England midfield that would. And last but certainly not least, we should not play the ball to Crouch in the air. For a bloke with that sort of height, he is woeful in the sky. Give him the ball to his feet, he'll control it (if he isn't falling over his gangling bloody legs), as he is better on the ground now than he'll ever be in the air. This sounds frighteningly like Mickey Adams. How will youngsters prove themselves and gain experience if they're not picked? As Wayne Rooney proved back in the day under Sven, if you're good enough, you're old enough. Older players can become complacent and lazy, as we've seen in recent England games, and should know already from watching the FOXES! I see what you're saying, but the way I understood it was that McClaren was planning a complete overhaul, and I think that'd be the wrong way to go. He'd need to find the balance between young and raw, and seasoned/experienced. That way he'll get to blood young lads in the international game to see how they get on, and they won't all be completely lost 'cos they'll have experience with them as well. I don't want to sound like MA But I also wouldn't want to sound like the guy that says play the entire Under 21's squad with a few subs from the Under 18's either.
