Manwell Pablo Posted 17 October 2006 Posted 17 October 2006 I've might have seen blue alligators and long-necked geese...and I've certainly seen Maybury at left-back so I know which looks the most out of place!!! He's going to play left back and he's going to score a rasping 30 yarder against his old club you watch.
Sooper Steve's shin Posted 17 October 2006 Posted 17 October 2006 Much as I think Maybury has been exceptionally poor in his last twenty or so appearances, to be fair he was playing out of position at right midfield. When he started, I thought he was a solid right-back who could make the odd break forward and support the winger well. The downside was his temper, he occasionally lashed out or let the red mist come down if he thought an injustice had been done. However, given the choice between him and Tug Boat Johansson, I would go with Maybury. Nils-Eric has done nothing at left-back, he is not mobile enough to play there (Saints' first on Saturday was the latest in a long line of goals against that should have been cut out by him).

He's main issue with the goal was coming inside when he didn't need to, and watching the ball not his man. He bunched up with Mcauley and Mcarthey and Jhon Viafara just ran round the back of him. BWP had done virtually the same thing 2 minutes earlier, Nils was in the land of nod 5 minutes before HT.

Maybury's big (huge !) problem playing at Left Back is his 'onefootedness' - I know some right footed players CAN play on the left, but they usually have some ability (unlike Maybury). His left foot is so lacking in doing anything other than keeping his body upright, that he just can't 'hack it' as a Left Back. At least NEJ has got a left foot.
Thracian Posted 17 October 2006 Posted 17 October 2006 Nils is much better defensively at left back where his height is important in our smallish side. As for Manwell's idea of Maybury scoring a rasper against his old club the only way that will happen is ifr he has a curry first! He's scored once with his right foot but the idea of scoring from the left is about as likely as Hughes beating Tiatto in a tackle!.

I noticed in the highlights that he was too close the middle. Naugty Nissa, don't abandon your post.

lookwhaticando Posted 17 October 2006 Posted 17 October 2006 Scored from the left at Sunderland season before last didn't he? Yes. Yes he did. He was coming in off the left by the looks of it. Picked the ball up slightly to the left of the pitch, he ran forward a little then dispatched the ball with his right foot. Had it curl up and over their keeper's right hand side.
lookwhaticando Posted 17 October 2006 Posted 17 October 2006 I love being a mod. I would say 'abuse of power' but you'd no doubt have replied: What's the point of having power if you can't abuse it? Good save, though, even if a little underhand.

Thracian Posted 17 October 2006 Posted 17 October 2006 Are you saying that after two years he's about due - like a long-lost Comet or something? Perhaps you've forgotten his style of shooting from the left-side against Macclesfield. I'm bleeding this a bit because the more I dismiss the idea the more likely it is that the fates will conspire to prove me wrong. If the fates are up to anything as difficult as that.
The Stig Posted 17 October 2006 Posted 17 October 2006 I think Stearman and Kenton are better and im not sure i like him at left back, think we should keep him though as its nice to have the option
lcfc_jme Posted 17 October 2006 Posted 17 October 2006 Really do not want to keep Maybury if we're offered a half decent sum of money for him. He isn't good enough to play where he wants, so why should we play him LB?? He's tried it once before, and he wasn't too great. Madness!!
Cheese Me Posted 17 October 2006 Posted 17 October 2006 Whatever we could've got for Maybury we should have taken if he (as appears to be the case) had no chance of getting back into the squad. A bit of cash and a player off the wage bill would have been much better than carrying a passenger if that is what he's become.
