Brummie-FOX Posted 12 November 2006 Posted 12 November 2006 Luton manager Mike Newell on assistant referee Amy Rayner: "She should not be here. I know that sounds sexist, but I am sexist, so I am not going to be anything other than that. "We have a problem in this country with political correctness, and bringing women into the game is absolutely beyond belief. "It is bad enough with the incapable referees and linesmen we have, but if you start bringing in women, you have big problems. "This is Championship football. This is not park football, so what are women doing here? It is tokenism for the politically-correct idiots."
samingram_uk Posted 12 November 2006 Posted 12 November 2006 what... did a women ref their game yesterday?
Coxy Posted 12 November 2006 Posted 12 November 2006 what... did a women ref their game yesterday? She was a lino, and a shit one at that
Brummie-FOX Posted 12 November 2006 Author Posted 12 November 2006 I didn't realise until the end of the Championship whether it was a man or woman. I just assumed it was a man with a pony tail..

In this particular case I can't see how being a women affects your ability to be an Assistant Referee, from what I've seen most of them only have to indicate off-sides, a physically impossible task on occasion whether you're male or female and when the ball has gone out of play. Hardly a men only task. When he calms down I think he''ll be a tad embarrassed by this outburst.
Libertine Posted 12 November 2006 Posted 12 November 2006 I agree with him to an extent. There has never been women in men's football, so why let them now? Let them do it women's football obviously.
davieG Posted 12 November 2006 Posted 12 November 2006 I agree with him to an extent. There has never been women in men's football, so why let them now? Let them do it women's football obviously. Just because something has never been done doesn't justify not doing it otherwise we'd still living in the dark ages.
Brummie-FOX Posted 12 November 2006 Author Posted 12 November 2006 Do women referee woman's football? Or do men?
Libertine Posted 12 November 2006 Posted 12 November 2006 Just because something has never been done doesn't justify not doing it otherwise we'd still living in the dark ages. I guess so. But what I do think is true is that the only reason AR is in the men's game is because of the PC idiots, like Newell said.
davieG Posted 12 November 2006 Posted 12 November 2006 I guess so. But what I do think is true is that the only reason AR is in the men's game is because of the PC idiots, like Newell said. Well that's one view of course, that she might have always dreamt of being a referee and worked her tits off for it (Cue jokes) might also have had something to do with it. Based on Newell's rant men should also be banned because a high proportion of them seem to be incapable.
Thracian Posted 12 November 2006 Posted 12 November 2006 It's always an interesting controversy. Rather like whether Michelle Wie and other women champions should play in top golf competitions. The principle is, I suppose, whether women who reach the top in their own sector, should be able to have the chance to test their ability at the very highest level. Broadly I cannot see why not. I certainly played against several womens internationals at squash including World Champion Lisa Opie and it was no big deal. Losing would only have been disappointing to the same extent as losing to a man. And, when a journalist, I was forever coming across women colleagues who were genuinely outstanding. Barbara Jones for instance, or Susan Jay. I've no idea if the lady at Luton was any good, a lousy official or simply had a bad day as people sometimes do in a daunting situation. But if she genuinely proves good enough in time, where's the problem? But, as in golf, there should be no easing of criteria for judging - no driving off the ladies tees so to speak.
Fez of Mahrez Posted 12 November 2006 Posted 12 November 2006 I guess so. But what I do think is true is that the only reason AR is in the men's game is because of the PC idiots, like Newell said. Just because she's a woman doesn't mean she is awful at running the line. I have seen enough atrocious linesmen at Leicester games to trust more than a handful of women to be better than them. There's no conceivable evidence that women would be worse at running the line. It might be a "men's game" but many linesmen have never played the game, so what advantage do they have? Whether this woman specifically is bad at her job, I don't know. It's ridiculous to assume she is, though, especially based on one game evaluated by the game's losing manager. Joking aside, with this sort of attitude women would never have got the vote. People who know me personally would laugh long and hard if they knew I was verging on feminism (especially some of the girls!) but Newell's attitude here stinks. He wouldn't get away with racism and he shouldn't get away with sexism.
Finnegan Posted 12 November 2006 Posted 12 November 2006 He chose his words especially stupidly, really. Nothing stops a woman being a good official. He may have a point about tokenism and political correctness, mind. If you're not the best person for the job, you're not the best person for the job. Personally I didn't see the game, can't really comment. I've only ever seen one female linesman, some slightly tubby woman with dark curly hair at City a year or two ago - I think? My memory might be a mess. I don't remember her being notably bad.
Fez of Mahrez Posted 12 November 2006 Posted 12 November 2006 Didn't Wendy Toms run the line at the Worthington Cup Final against Tranmere?
Simon Posted 12 November 2006 Posted 12 November 2006 A shit official is a shit official, regardless of gender. A good official is a good official, regardless of gender. Here endeth the lesson
Fez of Mahrez Posted 12 November 2006 Posted 12 November 2006 A shit official is a shit official, regardless of gender. A good official is a good official, regardless of gender. Here endeth the lesson Quite. I notice you're from Northampton. I don't know whether you ever go down Sixfields but it's a decent education in bias. Practically every single game, they waste hundreds of clear chances, get one or two dodgy decisions on 50/50s in the middle of the park and then spend the whole game chanting "you're just another shit ref" while their strikers fire numerous chances high, wide or out for a corner. Then they boo the ref off. It's embarrassing. That's not really got anything to do with anything, but I had to get it off my chest!! Annoying as hell.

Never been, although I don't live that far away from the stadium (East Hunsbury). I haven't been here all that long. Perhaps I should give it a miss then! Although, wherever I've lived, I always try to go and watch the local team once! Remember going to watch Cambridge V Oxford in the freezing cold a few seasons back- dire dire dire game; makes what you watch at the Walkers look almost Brazil-like in comparison, and I'm NOT kidding.

Amen to that. Some of our fans have obviously never seen proper lower-league football. When Stearman hoofs the ball down the right hand side with an almighty agricultural mow, he does it with a certain panache. Anyway, back on topic... Bloody women.
Brummie-FOX Posted 12 November 2006 Author Posted 12 November 2006 Marcus Bignot gets involved.. from BBC Sport "Comments like those will stop female officials from trying to make their way in the game. "Amy Rayner is a role model and full credit goes to her. What would he have said if it had been a male assistant referee making that decision? "It's easy to blame officials and Mike Newell is entitled to his opinion but remarks like that do not help the game."

Nationwider Posted 12 November 2006 Posted 12 November 2006 In 12 months, Newell's gone from being something of shining star, to a bit of a joke. If I was a football league chairman, I wouldn't want to employ him and his big gob. For someone who once lost their job because of their alcohol habit, he should get his own house in order before pulling a stunt like that. He's even gone after his own boss now.
Brummie-FOX Posted 12 November 2006 Author Posted 12 November 2006 Its good to see his team starting to look a bit of a joke now too
Libertine Posted 12 November 2006 Posted 12 November 2006 He's having a go at his chairman now. Can't find a link at the moment though. Edit: Hereyar. Link.
Benji Posted 12 November 2006 Posted 12 November 2006 Ok well i reckon i'm the only one that laughed at the comments Male ref ass get lamblasted by managers all the time, if they are fighting for all this equality then unfortunately it's not all going to be the positive things. Saying women shouldn't be there at all is as discriminative as it gets, but a quiet chuckle was had by me....
Brummie-FOX Posted 12 November 2006 Author Posted 12 November 2006 Someone made a good point on the radio earlier; All officials get abuse on/off the field. Would Newell come out and say something similar if a male linesman made the same mistake? I doubt it.
