Thracian Posted 31 December 2006 Posted 31 December 2006 Hopefully he'll never have another job in football again. It's a forlorn hope. The bloke seems blessed. Some people seem to survive whatever their level of ability in all sorts of fields. Look at the way virtually illiterate failed managers turn up in even more unlikely situations as television pundits. I'm still amazed the media unions allow footballers anywhere near media situations. I know it irritated me producing readable copy from the comments of household name footballers and then having to give them a byeline they never deserved because they never wrote a bloody word..
davieG Posted 7 January 2007 Posted 7 January 2007 From Sky sports. Les Reed claims he was undermined at Charlton Athletic by the media questioning his credentials as a Premiership manager. The top-flight strugglers parted with Reed on Christmas Eve, less than two months after he replaced Iain Dowie in the job. Though it was Reed's first high-profile managerial post, he insists he was not helped by the media, who he feels in turn influenced the fans' view of his ability. "There were very few, if any, supportive stories appearing in the media," Reed told Sky Sports News. "There was tremendous criticism from pundits on TV who don't know me, who found, I think, an easy story. "It was very easy to focus the problem on this man. 'He's never done it before, he quite clearly can't do this, can't do that' which are all fallacies. "The fans listen to that and begin to believe that, and that made it a very, very difficult situation, despite whatever I tried to do. "Everything I tried to do was professional and proper. All the training ground stuff was right, all the back-up stuff was right, but there was always this underlying feeling of me being undermined." Alan Pardew has since assumed control of the first team, but Reed insists he never felt threatened by the former West Ham United manager's availability. He added: "I wasn't (fearful) at the time. The problem is when there are people like Alan Curbishley and Alan Pardew not in work, they are a threat to anyone who is and who is struggling. "At the time I felt I did have strong backing from the board and I would have the opportunity to change things and freshen things up in January to rebalance the squad. "I spoke to Alan Pardew and wished him all the best and that's continued in the reverse. Circumstances change. "When I had the meeting with the chairman and we discussed Alan Pardew, and Pardew's pending or possible appointment, it got my full backing. I'm just glad Alan was available because I think he was the right choice."
Leonisco Posted 7 January 2007 Posted 7 January 2007 From Sky sports. "There were very few, if any, supportive stories appearing in the media," Reed told Sky Sports News. "There was tremendous criticism from pundits on TV who don't know me, who found, I think, an easy story. Strange - in the same interview he acts like he can't understand his sacking... "It was very easy to focus the problem on this man. 'He's never done it before, he quite clearly can't do this, can't do that' which are all fallacies. ...and then he hits the nail on the head. Fooking muppet.
Thracian Posted 7 January 2007 Posted 7 January 2007 Never, I'd imagine, has so much been written about such an undeserving individual. If Les Reed clones ran football teams the grounds would only be needed for building sites.
Wycombe Fox Posted 7 January 2007 Posted 7 January 2007 If Les Reed clones ran football teams... That's the problem with our game - Les Reed clones DO run football teams, and too many of them too! They're all clones because they read the same bloody manuals! Just goes to show that you need more than a manual and some badges. But thoses gurus at the FA deem it necessary to have the badges or you don't get the job!
Milky Posted 7 January 2007 Posted 7 January 2007 I didn't think it was possible for him to look more of a tit, but he's just managed it.
lookwhaticando Posted 7 January 2007 Author Posted 7 January 2007 I didn't think it was possible for him to look more of a tit, but he's just managed it. He's gone for the old 'woe is me' sob story. Get over it. You took on a job, your team played like a right bunch of drunk schoolboys, you got absolutely battered at Tottenham. Regardless of the availability of Pardew, you were always just a few games from the sack because, as everyone else could see, the teams you played were simply not up to the task - either because the players are horrendously shit, or you're an incredibly shit manager. Since Dowie's teams at least looked competitive for a while, I'm led to believe you were the problem. Quite funny that another article from an ex-Addicks boss turned up today - from Dowie.
Flynny Posted 7 January 2007 Posted 7 January 2007 I always thought Charlton would go down when Curbs left, and it's partly his fault. He built a grafting team around his own idiosyncracies and never really bought many quality players. Without Curbs, it doesn't work. They should definately be in the bottom 1/4 of the table, perhaps not bottom, but certainly struggling.
lookwhaticando Posted 16 January 2007 Author Posted 16 January 2007 Les Reed: woe is me. Reed explains Charlton departure Les Reed has revealed that it was his decision to step down as Charlton's head coach in December - and blames the media for making his job impossible. Reed, who was in charge for 41 days, told the Addicks matchday programme: "Nobody told me it would be easy. "What I had not accounted for was the media campaign that would create a hostile environment. "I took the decision to step aside so the chairman could get the ball rolling on Alan Pardew's appointment." Reed took charge after the departure of Iain Dowie in mid-November - but stepped down on 24 December, with Pardew named as the new manager hours later. And Reed, the former technical director of the Football Association, believes the media campaign against him "was instigated by football pundits on television who did not know me or this club well enough to comment". 606 DEBATE: Give your reaction to Reed's comments The 54-year-old said that he would not have left the role if he did not think it was the best thing for the Addicks, who are currently second from bottom in the Premiership. "I would like to make it clear I would have done everything in my power to get this club out of trouble," added Reid. "But perhaps it was right man, right club, wrong time. My position had become untenable in circumstances not of my making and beyond my control. "I had stated several times that I would not quit the job and betray the trust placed in me, so I did not walk away from the problem. "I still believe in different circumstances I would have been a successful manager at Charlton and could still be a success elsewhere." Anyone feel sorry for him? Nope. Didn't think so. He loves to blow his own trumpet, he really does. Did someone remove a few ribs for him or what?

Nobody has to feel sorry for him... he's not deserving. He blows his own trumpet at every opportunity and wonders why people don't like him much.

lookwhaticando Posted 16 January 2007 Author Posted 16 January 2007 Was reading Gerrard's book the other night and he says he does not respect Les Reed at all because he didn't want to know him when he was starting out with England. Reed, the Charlton head coach, was in the England set-up when Kevin Keegan gave the Liverpool captain his international debut as a 20-year-old more than six years ago. “I’ve got his Euro 2000 shirt hanging on my wall saying ‘best wishes, Steven Gerrard’,” Reed said yesterday. “There are players you look at very early on and you’re convinced they’ve got what it takes. He would be one from the early days that you’d say, he’s got something very special. It’s probably got to do with drive and passion and enthusiasm, where you think, he’s got talent, but he’s also got that extra mentality that’s going to take that talent somewhere.” While Reed has Gerrard on his wall, the midfield player used his recent autobiography to carpet his former coach, framing Reed in the metaphorical sense. “I was a young lad who had never been away from home to play football before. I felt Reed and [Derek] Fazackerley could have shown more care and sympathy. They were always pushing me, always telling me to buck up my ideas,” Gerrard wrote. “They didn’t seem to understand that not everyone can board a plane, settle in a strange hotel far from the family they love, and find it easy. In fact they made me feel like s***. My homesickness worsened whenever I was forced to be in their company. To this day, I have no respect for Reed or Fazackerley.” Reed: Thanks for the memories; Gerrard: Thanks for nothing! Reed says he knew Gerrard was talented (he's such a great scout, clearly). Yet Gerrard says he was being told to buck his ideas up which is not the traditional way to deal with talented young players in the making.
Leonisco Posted 16 January 2007 Posted 16 January 2007 Christ, the man is so deluded it's untrue. Les - you were sacked cos you're a shit coach and always have been - GET THE FVCK OVER IT.
