Sods Posted 21 December 2006 Posted 21 December 2006 NIKO NIKO NIKO NIKO NIKO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In the england team, Much better than that ponce from nottingham and certainley better than jones. Go i love him
The People's Hero Posted 21 December 2006 Posted 21 December 2006 He's a bit of a hero, to be fair. Deserves the call up. Unlucky not to have played more International Cricket IMO.
Samu Posted 21 December 2006 Posted 21 December 2006 He was unfortunate to play cricket in his prime in the Alec Stewart era, and hence why this call up has not come sooner. Leicestershire hero, what a character. Well done Paul
Flynny Posted 21 December 2006 Posted 21 December 2006 congrats paul but why no broad in sqaud? A good question indeed. Being in the one day squad even if it's just for training and he doesn't make the team would be good oppurtunity to work on his batting. And surely Tremlett isn't better than him?
Joe. Posted 21 December 2006 Posted 21 December 2006 Well done Nixon... I'm sure he will about 10 times better than Jones. It's hard to be worse really...

Wonder if it's a bit of politics involved. His old man really laced into the ECB about changing his bowling action.

Bert Posted 21 December 2006 Posted 21 December 2006 The academy Broad was at, tried to change his bowling action, Broad was uncomfortabale with it, and his father wasn't happy.
dandannieldanok Posted 21 December 2006 Posted 21 December 2006 Deserves his chance. Has been a great servant to Leicestershire and was probably our most consistent player last season. Good luck to him!!
Bert Posted 21 December 2006 Posted 21 December 2006 I was well gutted when he left us for a few years.
surrifox Posted 22 December 2006 Posted 22 December 2006 A good selection- but where did that come from?! Prior, Read and Foster must be wondering. The selection policy of the one day squad is a little erratic- no Broad but places for slow trundler Lewis and injury prone Tremlett. Vaughan wasn't considered much of a one-day player when he was at the top of his game- now he's picked even when no-one knows if he's fit.

Vaughan wasn't considered much of a one-day player when he was at the top of his game- now he's picked even when no-one knows if he's fit. Pride and difficulty swallowing it. They dropped Jones for a bit and gave Read a go, probably hoping Read would fail, justifying the selection of Jones. This didn't happen. Read was dropped anyway. Picking one of the other 'young pretenders' now might give the impression Jones' long term spot is up for grabs. The England Selectors don't want this. He's the darling of Kent and by extension, the darling of many in the upper echelons of the ECB. Answer - pick someone with quality who will probably do a good job but will not threaten Jones' long term prospects of an England career. Send Jones off to play a bit of cricket elsewhere or some intensive nets, then get him back in. Then of course there is the distinction between test/one day anyway. And of course that to a degree the selectors had to do something. They have taken criticism and the natural thing to do is make a change, even if for the sake of it, to show willing.
surrifox Posted 22 December 2006 Posted 22 December 2006 I love a good conspiracy theory-difference is this one looks plausible. When he was sent to the Kent Second XI to "recover a bit of form " he was $hite and couldn't score a run - hardly surprising given his complete inability to read and play the length of a ball properly so one would hope that for the sake of English cricket they(Kent) lose interest- I don't see how he can be selected for England again- adequate (but no better than that) keeper and a non-batter)
The People's Hero Posted 22 December 2006 Posted 22 December 2006 When he gets himself in, he's a good bat. He's a shaky starter though. Don't think he will ever make runs against the top sides when they're playing well. As for his keeping.... well I consider myself a batting wicketkeeper and don't get me started on his keeping technique. Read is an infinitely better keeper and probably a marginally (at least) better bat, especially in the one day game. Don't expect Nixon to let us down though. Don't rate Prior very highly myself as a keeper.
BartonFox Posted 22 December 2006 Posted 22 December 2006 Paul Nixon is a great county cricketer and a real LCCC legend, but I just can't see him stepping up to it against the Aussies, as much as I hope I am wrong I don't think he'll do too well. If there is ever a bad time to be selected for your country this is it, the England side are going to get whitewashed across the tour.

vanfox12 Posted 22 December 2006 Posted 22 December 2006 Much as I hate to admit it, I fear I must agree.. Frankly he's got nothing to lose if he is picked as we've already lost the series.
Ultra Posted 23 December 2006 Posted 23 December 2006 He's only in for the one-day games. And there were a number of better and younger choices available to the selectors. It's a big jump from lower league cricket to playing in Australia!
lcfc_jme Posted 24 December 2006 Posted 24 December 2006 Well done Paul Nixon Quality player, Leicestershire Legend, well deserved
