So you don't think Hume, when fully fit and sharp, is in our best 11?

Come on Thrac! You were starting to warm to him and had him in your preferred team a couple of weeks ago! :P

I'm not against him as such - in central midfield.

But Kelly likes him so much he'd play him in goal if he had to - just to give him a game.

Yes I criticise certain aspects of his game - but you could do that with anyone in our side.

But what I am adamant about is that Hughes is not a right winger. And we cannot afford the negativity of playing Hughes and Tiatto in the centre.

Basically when both of them pass they ball they pass the buck rather than creating anything. I don't think they necessarily mean to, they just don't have the creative touch of natural attacking midfielders.

Williams does create when he tunes his passing, Porter does it naturally and so does King. Weso is another in the Tiatto/Hughes mould but a better passer.

Because we lack a right winger, two or our three central midfielders have to be creative and supportive. So do our full-backs to prevent space in midfield when any midfielders advance.

If Hughes were picked as our harassing/defensive midfielder, no problem. But not together with any of Tiatto/Wesolowski/Johnson/Stearman/Maybury.

I still like the idea of him on the right wing with the right people around him (Stearman to overlap from right-back, Porter or Hume in central midfield to support the attack, Wesolowski or Tiatto as the other central midfielder to run around like a mentalist). With those sort of players in key positions, you can pad out the left and right wing with tidy footballers as our team doesn't suit flying wingers (especially when they are Josh Low and Momo Sylla) and we should be playing more through the centre with lively, energetic central midfielders.

you're right i misunderstood the thread. when fully fit/on form hume would start, hammond wouldn't even be on the bench.

GK Logan (I'd be happy with him or Henderson)

RB Kenton (Solid, consistent, at the expense of Stearman and Maybs unfortunately)

CB McCarthy (Obviously)

CB Kisnorbo (Obviously)

LB Johansson (Definately our most underrated player)

RM Porter (Better on the left but would like to see him on the right, becuse there's no-one better)

CM Williams (We play so much better with him in the team)

CM Hughes (Plays a lot better with Williams than with *grimace* Johnson *shudder*)

LM Tiatto (Hardman)

ST Hume (One of the best players in the division on his day IMO)

ST Hammond (Currently playing better than Fryatt and fantastic on his day)

Subs - Henderson, McAuley, Wesolowski, Welsh, Fryatt

A lot of what you say sounds okay but Hughes on the right wing? I wouldn't have wanted him near any right wing of mine.

But you do touch on a problem. Tiatto, Hughes, Wesolowski, Hume are all viewed as alright footballers and both the manager and fans tend to want to use them.

The reality is we can only afford one of them in midfield because otherwise we're too short of goals potential.

Tiatto can't do 90 minutes, Wesolowski can't do 45, Hume hasn't played midfield for ages and Hughes is fairly negative and lightweight. That's the reality and that's the main source of our problem.

You don't mention King, presumably because, like others, you've never seen him. No he's not a world beater but he's better than that lot because he's got strengths in more areas and most important of all, he's fit or, at least, he was.

Williams makes two and that leaves one space in a three-man midfield, from the four listed..

Alternatively, with Hammond seemingly unable to get his head up enough to play right side, we are left with only two options if we want to play 4-4-2 (I won't comment on Cadamarteri cos I know nothing about his current performance level).

Either we use Gradel on the right (better than the alternatives but risky cos he's really not ready) or you move Porter to the right and make do with Tiatto on the left.

And you'd still need attacking full-backs whichever system we adopt.

Once that system was in place it would form a sensible two-system blueprint for the future and it would be a matter of seeing who was capable of 8 goodish performances out of 10 in their role and who needed replacing in a hurry.

Given the 4-4-2 with Gradel or Porter on the right, our natural strikers Dodds and Fryatt might well prove our best strike partnership wth Hammond/Hume as subs because Hammond's pace would no longer be so vital.

**** it. I wrote out a whole load of stuff in reply to that and then lost my internet connection and the whole lot went.

Suffice to say, I have seen King play but I have my reasons for not mentioning him much - will post in more detail tomorrow if anyone's still bothered!

Have a nice evening.

I think we need to sign a pacy right winder who can cross the ball and a hard man (resemblence of Roy Keane... passionate and all that, or resemblence to Danny Tiatto at our level, but needs to be young)

And then, on our day, we could get promotion :D

13. Henderson - GK - Tough call between him and Conrad though.

4. Kenton - CB - He can make a difference when he's on it, just needs to be.

14. McAuley - CB - Proven himself very capable on occasions.

3. Kisnorbo - CB - I wonder if this guy would make a good captain?

2. Maybury - RWB - He or Stearman are the best to play here, just feel Stearman can offer more in the mid.

11. Tiatto - LWB - Can't think of many other options here.

8. Williams - CM - This guy when he plays can make a huge difference.

20. Wesolowski - CM - When he's on...he's on.

17. Stearman - CM - Had a great partnership with Weso during the Villa game, put him here.

7. Hume - CF - Sounds silly putting Hume upfront by himself, but I can't see anyone else up there.

Bench: 25. Logan, 5. McCarthy, 27. Porter, 6. Hughes & 12. Fryatt

Of course, no long punts allowed with this - but hopefully with packing the centre of midfield the team could play around and set Hume onto balls into the box. Stearman and Weso's partnership at the Villa game looked more than capable of doing this and Williams has the ability to hit some long range belters.

i think you'd do better with 11 players.

Oh :P in that case put Fryatt up with Hume also. Damn not being my day today, need to wake up.

Lets not dismiss the ten men quite yet though people. Lets give the 5-3-1 formation ago and hope the wing-backs pitch in and help Hume!! :D

Its the way forward!!!!!
