lildave3 Posted 23 January 2007 Posted 23 January 2007 Selling Ashley Young was a great bit of business, getting 9.65 million for a player that isn't yet proven at this level. Will Watford now go and sign some great players and perform the great escape? Is this another example of a club struggling, then after selling their star player go on to big and better things? Well if their first game without him is anything to go by, then yes. Watford 2-1 Blackburn
MC Prussian Posted 23 January 2007 Posted 23 January 2007 I'm keen on finding out who they'll be bringing in for that money. It's a good deal for Watford.

This is because the players will instantly look at the league position and the dump of a ground before turning straight back home.
potter3 Posted 23 January 2007 Posted 23 January 2007 Good deal, I would pay £4-5million for him tops, I've only seen him play on Match of the Day though. And I don't really pay attention to the Watford matches...

Besides, Filbert Street didn't dissuade Roberto Mancini or Stan Collymore...
Geo V Posted 24 January 2007 Posted 24 January 2007 One game without him and they win tonight Watford are trying to get players and had a £3.5m bid accepted for Collins John at Fulham but I think he is stalling on signing for them. I think theyll spend it wisely but are more than likely to look at lower leagues and have next season in mind (dont forget they have already bought the two lads from Rotherham) To be honest I am more gutted about Villa. MON hasnt been there that long but already he has added one of the best youngsters in England to his squad and punted out a misfiring Baros and got Johnny Carew in house goalscoring record is quality and IMO has what is needed to be a star in England. He will make the Villa class, no doubt. The swine

The main issue is, Watford have cash, but will they spend it? Probably not. Watford will probably operate the 'bank the cash' approach to this transfer. 10m quid or thereabouts doesn't come along all that often, so when it does you set a chunk of it aside. I doubt they'll spend more than five million quids on players coming in. They're quite a way off the pace, and probably resigned to relegation, and there's few players available for a total of 10m quid to haul them away from the bottom in time. Might as well buy one or two players to boost the squad, but not for 10m quid. Bank the money and use it for a squad strengthening next season for a re-promotion campaign. Unless of course, Boothroyd is so shrewd in the transfer market he can spend a couple of million quid on a couple of players and keep Watford up. I hear Louis Dodds is looking for a new club - he might solve their striker problem.

With the £30m they will get for finishing in the bottom 3, Watford will end up having far more than £10m made available to spend. Thats the sort of thing that we will have to compete with next season. The only positive is that not many decent players want to go to a club who hooooooooooofs the ball up so often.

Manwell Pablo Posted 24 January 2007 Posted 24 January 2007 He was referring to the attendance at yesterday's game of 13'766. Ah. Well they do play horrid football and are as good as relegated so you can't blame some of the locals for staying at home for a mid week game.
RowlattsFox Posted 24 January 2007 Posted 24 January 2007 and i am sure blackburn's away support did not do much too bolster the attendance
lcfc_jme Posted 24 January 2007 Posted 24 January 2007 Very good bit of business on their part for fetching over 9 million quid for a player who is young and unproven at the top level. They'll still struggle to attract great players though, and they're as good as down already. Can't see them performing a "great escape" tbh. We'll see them next year
dandannieldanok Posted 24 January 2007 Posted 24 January 2007 We'll see them next year God no, not a trip to the hovel that is Watford. That covers both the city and Vicarage Road.

Janx Posted 24 January 2007 Posted 24 January 2007 My mates a Horn, he reckons its good bsuiness but that Oneill will obviously turn him into a bigger, better player and get more than that money back, plus many points and a couple of trophies. He also thinks that 9M is a hell of a warchest to take back down with them to be able to come back up... he doesnt and I agree think that buying a couple of mediocre players will keep them up...
Joe. Posted 24 January 2007 Posted 24 January 2007 Very good bit of business for Charlton but I think it proves to everyone that Aidy Boothroyd has resigned himself to relegation despite what he says. With that lump of cash they can really put forward a decent promotion push for next season. It's a hell of a lot of money for a soon to be Championship team.
