Leicfox Posted 31 January 2007 Posted 31 January 2007 How can you be saved by God exactly? By letting Jesus into your heart.
Flynny Posted 31 January 2007 Posted 31 January 2007 I like our system. I like the House of Lords, I like having the Queen. Without them, the media would wield way too much power in this country. The House of Lords very carefully vets all bills and doesn't have to pander to voter whims. The Queen makes sure Murdoch doesn't run the country. It works. The Royals work hard for their money, too. They average more than an engagement a day each, I think. It's a small price to pay for both a balance on modern democracy, an ambassador for our country, and a figurehead, not to mention the historical value of a royal family.
l444ry Posted 31 January 2007 Posted 31 January 2007 You're quite good at slagging off the present system but you fail to give a suitable alternative! We should be proud of our current system. Ok it's not perfect but it's a hell of a lot more stable and corruption free than most other countries. So I take it that you think all that power in so few hands is OK. Fair enough. We got taken into the Common Market and the Falklands War without the electorate having a say because of royal powers bestowed onto our Prime Ministers. If that is something we should be proud of, as a modern democracy, then you go on and believe that. But don't be surprised if some people take an alternative view.
Geo V Posted 1 February 2007 Posted 1 February 2007 Not bothered. They bring the tourists into the country, esp London and that can only be good. I just wish that they changed the currency again to those big colourful notes like yesteryear. Get on the phone to ones mint yer majesty!
Lemon Harpic Posted 15 February 2007 Posted 15 February 2007 If you are all going to keep them - then can they pay a proper rate of tax and stop being subsidised please? In 2003/4, The Treasury got about £184.8 million from the Crown Estate, whereas the Monarchy got only around £36.8 million from the Civil List, Annuities, Grants in Aid, and other government funding. Effectively, the Monarchy are paying tax at a rate of 80%. If we got rid of the royals, aside from a short-lived financial windfall from selling off their lands, The Treasury would suffer. Which means fewer schools and hospitals. Which means gangs of hoody-clad truants running around the streets drinking fizzy crack and stabbing homeowners at random. And when these decent, law-abiding homeowners go to hospital they have to wait, bleeding profusely, 769 hours for a MRSA-infected bed. Is that really what you want?
Lemon Harpic Posted 15 February 2007 Posted 15 February 2007 This is like a red rag to a bull. Or should I say a red rag to someone who speaks a lot of bull. Step forwards... LEMON HARPIC! Nope. Sorry. From now on I will no longer express strong or controversial opinions. In fact I shan't express any opinions at all. Instead, I'll just stand back and make snide comments about people who do express an opinion, so that I look clever and witty.
Daggers Posted 15 February 2007 Posted 15 February 2007 From now on I will no longer express strong or controversial opinions. In fact I shan't express any opinions at all. This is the last song I will ever sing *hurray!* Instead, I'll just stand back and make snide comments about people who do express an opinion, so that I look clever and witty. Oh no, I've changed my mind again *awwwww!* ...just say "Goodnight and thank you!" because when I see these words they're truly disappointing.

Sounds familiar, oh I know why! it's like that already.
Guest Posted 15 February 2007 Posted 15 February 2007 Quite frankly, I can't see why anybody supports this ludicrous system of running a country. And you don't get that in a presidential system?Nowhere is safe from manipulation. Show me one true democracy - it doesn't exist. But I think we could be a lot worse off than we are.
Head Honcho Posted 15 February 2007 Posted 15 February 2007 I must admit it is pleasing to see the result of the poll. 61p for every citizen of the UK annually isn't a lot too ask.
Daggers Posted 15 February 2007 Posted 15 February 2007 61p for every citizen of the UK annually isn't a lot too ask. I'll do the job for 25p from each of you, how's that?
