As likely as arsenal

City are ten points away from the play offs. Arsenal are 10 points away from chelsea. I hope both of my favourite sides can acheive their goals. We're not that far away from the play offs. We just need to get a run going. I still believe that we can get into the play offs. And win promotion. What does everyone else think?

What i think is that we are closer to relegation that we are promotion, put it that way. ;)

Doesn't make any difference MON, have you not been to a game this season? The football is shit and terrible to watch.

We have no chance of getting play off's, we'll be lucky to finish in the top half.

Next season will be ours. :)

With three more relegated prem teams...next year will be just as tough. Not to mention that we once again have to rebuild. I say once again, but on the other hand I don't think the builder did a particularly good job this year.

Lets just hope we can offer more by way of quality next year.

You are right Daniel, the football has been crap this year, ashown little signs of improvement...lets just keep our fingers crossed and get behind the team at home. With a bit of hope we might claw our way up the table. It has got to begin soon though

Yes, spot on.

The teams that come down will be up there i should think. I know we all said the same last season but it depends what players teams keep hold of, WBA will have Earnshaw and Campbell upfront. Norwich will have Ashton & Huckerby. Palace will have Johnson. Will be tough next season but I think play off's will be a realistic aim for us.

If Levein can get players in early and get them working together I agree. But if we get a bunch of old useless codgers in and give them little time to gel, we will have just as rough a start.

Re-building is a horrible place to be as a supporter...you never know what you are going to get! One thing is for sure though...they are on balance of probabilities going to be better than what we currently have. More players like Maybury please!

Due to our history in the past 10 years we should be aiming for top 6, but it will be a lot harder. To get back up in the big time, it should be up first time, i can see us spending a few more years in championship and lower divisions like Ipswich, Sunderland, Derby, Swindon.

I really hope we can get straight back up, but unless CL sorts out the men from the boys we sould here for a while yet.

I think it would be a grave error if we managed to get promoted this season - we are not ready and CL needs more time to build his own squad - consolidation is the name of the game this season. Theres no point going up and coming straight back down again - look at West Brom, they are being labeled a yo-yo team as we were in the 80's - we cant go back to that again.

Sadly its one of the few ways we can hope to ever compete. We need the revenue...being in this league is hitting our finances hard! Every extra year we spend in this league means further cuts in expenditure. I'd rather yo yo then be the next Sheffield Wednesday.

I do see your point but surely its not good for morale or our nervous systems! I know its not that important but pundits and the media never take us seriously - its become a trend to automatically dismiss the clubs going up as having no right to be there and are tipped to go straight back down again, which is whats been happening the past few years. When we do finally go up I want us to stay there.

We would definately still be in the Prem if MON was still here, Peter Taylor has a lot to answer for imo!

I think the parachure payments of £6mill will play a big part and don't they finish this summer, if so that creates a big problem for us.

If we don't get promoted this season, and the chances are slim then CL will have to use the parachute money to build a team capable of promotion to the premier. That by definition will be Championship players.

If we are fortunate enough to get promoted at the end of next season it will still involve a big rebuilding job to 'fill' the team with premier quality players - we would have next to no budget to do that.

If we got promoted this year, big IF, the step up would be greater but we would at least have the parachute payments to buy some premier qualility players in this intital rebuild.

I guess it's all academic really as it is now such a long shot this promotion lark this season.

By the way if I've got the parachute payment dates wrong then this is all a load of old cobblers and should be ignored. ;)

we went down with the following players:

Walker, Flowers, Elliot, Sinclair, Taggart (but never fit), Davidson, Izzet, Savage, Jones, Sturridge, Scowcroft, wise, Gunlaugsson, rowett, Dickov, Deane.

Basset should also take some of the blame IMO.

mc:Savage

That team could have quiet easily held its own in the premier league. With a few bargain buys. How on earth we managed to lose 7 games in a row is beyond me. It also Bassets fault.

Can someone explain to me what the paracute payments are, and who pays them and why?

55652[/snapback]

It is money you get from the premier league after you are relegated, to deal with the financial side. You get around 6 million for two years. I dont know how it works if you go straight back up though.

The premier league pays them i think.

Hmm true MON but Bassett didnt spend money like it was going out of fashion and signing players on 6 year contracts and excessively high wages! Although he did sign a load of old codgers to be fair. :ermm:

How can it be a grave error getting promoted  ? Even if we do go straight back down, CL will have a whole lot more money to build his squad with! But anyway, talk of promotion is utopian. A miracle would be needed, seeing as we haven't played any football yet this season that looks like something a promotion challenger would deliver. I would've have believed it was possible if we were no more than 6 points behind and keeping up with the pace, but that's not the case. In any case next season should be more promising than this one, with much of the dead wood gone. And I have this feeling Stearman will become a key figure for us too in 2005/2006 ;)
