City Fan Posted 22 February 2007 Posted 22 February 2007 Am I the only person who thinks the UEFA Cup is a pointless, waste of time, joke of a competition? Discuss.....
Milky Posted 23 February 2007 Posted 23 February 2007 It gives hope to fans, that chance of getting 6th place. It's a chance for an exciting adventure when you're not a big club.
lildave3 Posted 23 February 2007 Posted 23 February 2007 It doesn't get good until the semis/final, far too many smaller teams in it.
Joe. Posted 23 February 2007 Posted 23 February 2007 It's a decent competition for the clubs such as Blackburn and Newcastle who are never going to get anywhere near Europe otherwise. I agree with lildave though, it doesn't get good until around the quarter finals time.
davieG Posted 23 February 2007 Posted 23 February 2007 Am I the only person who thinks the UEFA Cup is a pointless, waste of time, joke of a competition? Discuss..... You could say that about the League Cup, and many do but we were happy and proud to win it. It lost any credibility / aura it had when it ceased to be the Cup Winners Cup as did the Champions League when it stopped being for Champions. Both of them now have far to many pointless games diluting the competition and relevance.
C-man Posted 23 February 2007 Posted 23 February 2007 Am I the only person who thinks the UEFA Cup is a pointless, waste of time, joke of a competition? Discuss..... I think its a ridiculously difficult competition to win. Most teams have played 8 games so far and still only in the Last 16.
Geo V Posted 23 February 2007 Posted 23 February 2007 The current format is a joke (the initial group stages and the fact that in that you dont play the teams in your group home and away) but the competitions status itself is worthwhile. You do get soem decent teams in the UEFA and it is a springboard to better things and the second best available European trophy about.
Manwell Pablo Posted 23 February 2007 Posted 23 February 2007 Am I the only person who thinks the UEFA Cup is a pointless, waste of time, joke of a competition? Discuss..... It's not a waste of time at all, as Davie has already pointed out it's the European compeitiion for the winners of the domestic cup competitions. Just as the Champions League is the European competition for the winners of the League. Any club would be happy to win it. I'll admit there are prehaps to many teams involved these days, last nights game on Channel Five was horrifyingly boring, but then again AZ Fernbache looked like top quality entertainment.
Stuliasz Posted 23 February 2007 Posted 23 February 2007 If there was no UEFA Cup, it would mean that the Champions League would have to get bigger when in my opinion its probably as big as it should ever be right now, or that less teams qualify for Europe and the gap financially between the 'big clubs' and the lesser clubs increases exponentially each year, certainly in England.
Wils Posted 23 February 2007 Posted 23 February 2007 it wasnt when we were in it. Exactly. And if we ever got it in it again people wouldnt say it was pointless.

Both of them now have far to many pointless games diluting the competition and relevance. I've never really understood why they got rid of the Cup Winners Cup as some good sides have won it over the years as well as a number of British Clubs including Totteham(First British Team to win a European Trophy fact), Arsenal, Rangers, Aberdeen, West Ham, Everton and Man City. Also what's wrong with Smaller clubs competing in Europe, look at Alaves who reached the final in 2001 losing to the mighty Liverpool. Face facts Leicester are a small club in terms of European football.
Nationwider Posted 23 February 2007 Posted 23 February 2007 There's nothing wrong with the competition as such, but it's been diluted so much it's lost its edge. They desperately need to get rid of the crappy group stage and make it a simple 64-team knockout, over two legs, with a one-leg final. Then they need to stop Champions League losers getting into it after Christmas. Then they need to hold the final in March, to give it more of a profile.
lildave3 Posted 23 February 2007 Posted 23 February 2007 Does anyone else dislike having two legs aswell?

They woudln't do that because of the revenue it brings in with the group stages, television money etc. That's football these days, it's all about money.
davieG Posted 23 February 2007 Posted 23 February 2007 Does anyone else dislike having two legs as well? I find it quite useful actually, it beats hopping around which can become quite tiring.
Nationwider Posted 23 February 2007 Posted 23 February 2007 Does anyone else dislike having two legs aswell? I suppose it means Heather Mills can't enter the UEFA Cup....
lildave3 Posted 23 February 2007 Posted 23 February 2007 I find it quite useful actually, it beats hopping around which can become quite tiring. Done me Davie. So this is how Joeb feels...
lcfc_jme Posted 24 February 2007 Posted 24 February 2007 The Uefa Cup isn't pointless. If we were ever in it again, it'd be our favourite competition and we'd all look forward to going on a magical European run.
