That's excellent.

In respect of the original question, I think if you're running around in a car with a dodgy speedo, you're probably screwed from a "going to court and pleading innocence" point-of-view.

In fairness to Ken, I don't think he meant the speedo - lycra or electronic - was deliberately dodgy.

It is quite possible (common, indeed) for a car's speedometer to have small error in the reporting of vehicle speed. I think most speedometers are supposed to be accurate to within 3mph either side of the reported speed. This goes some way to explaining the supposed leniency for speeds only a hair over the limit.

Although, most cars speedometers tend to be conservative, if anything... so if your speedometer does read dead on, you should be alright anyway. :P:ph34r:

My guess is that if you proved your speedo was crap for whatever reason, you'd also have proved that you were driving a car that wasn't roadworthy in the first place.

I'd just take the initial hit in that case.

There's a bit of a difference between a crap speedo (which would surely render the car unroadworthy) and one with acceptable levels of error. :thumbup:

I thought that there was something out now-a-days where, if you get caught speeding, then rather than getting the 3 points you have to do some sort of test, but I think you still get the fine!

It depends whether the local police in your area run such a scheme.

In my area, the police don't. The police in the next county north from me do, but only if you're caught on certain roads, and within certain speeds.

It's all a load of bollocks.

Surely "Bastards" would refer to the people who routinely break the law in their cars and expect to get away with it.

The ban will not be at fault for costing you your job - the times you broke the law and accrued 12 points is at the crux of this. Why do car drivers seem to think they have a right to do what they want in their vehicle? :dunno::rolleyes:

And why should some other human being have the right to decide how best I should drive my car at a particular time. Whoever makes the decision might be a lousy driver.

Besides had he been a policeman he would probably have got away with it altogether. The whole set-up is legalised theft and authoritarianism. Cameras are often set up where people are likely to "speed" and why? Because they are all maniacs or because it is safe to drive at that speed?

I don't need some bureaucrat to tell me a safe speed to drive in the circumstances, and what is a safe speed is a bloody sight different on empty roads at 3.00am compared with roads that pass a school at 3.30 in term time.

Relative safety also depends on the capabilities of the vehicle you are driving and who is behind the wheel. Some people I see driving - especially at weekends - are a menace driving at well under the speed limit, in fact far more dangerous than people driving 10% above it.

If the Government really believes prevention is better than cure they should legislate that speed governors are fitted to all vehicles in the same way as many lorries. But they are hypocrites and I don't mean just this Government. They'd rather gather the fines and let police officers off for driving at over a ton.

28 days ban or locked up with leroy ?

Ban, i might be laughing that i dodged a bullet but for those of you thinking i deservered a sterner punishment. Me and my girlfriend went out for a meal on sunday evening and as i was getting out of the taxi she slammed the door on my finger and broke it. Ouch, but maybe just desserts as i would normally have driven.
