Thracian Posted 6 July 2007 Posted 6 July 2007 A friend of mine is trying to find out: If you've been banned from driving is the slate wiped clean of points when the ban expires? He's worried cos he's just gone past another camera in the mistaken belief he was in a 40mph limit instead of 30mph.
cisono Posted 6 July 2007 Posted 6 July 2007 This "friend" is not you, is it? I would have thought so, but I am not sure...
Bryn Posted 6 July 2007 Posted 6 July 2007 I'd have thought so, and I'd tell him not to worry because chances are they'll make him go to a speeding seminar rather than take his license.

It depends on how long the ban was for, of course, but don't the points stay on your licence for a couple of years?? My first 3 points took 3 years if I remember correctly.
BigGibbo Posted 6 July 2007 Posted 6 July 2007 ive had several mates band & when they got there licence back after completing there bans you start a fresh but i think one had six points instead of twelve for a period of time but eitherway the license wont be taken on one speeding ticket
cisono Posted 6 July 2007 Posted 6 July 2007 ive had several mates' bands... Rather greedy of you, wasn't that?

allard7 Posted 6 July 2007 Posted 6 July 2007 whilst on the driving subject, i have heard that there is going to be a new rule from a friend that if you were born from 1991 to the present day you cannot drive untill you reach 18 ? if anyone knows anything about this it would be a great help.

Don't know anything about that, but driving before 18 is a bad idea anyway...
Zingari Posted 6 July 2007 Posted 6 July 2007 been driving for over 35 years ( including HGV and PSVs ), and until the last couple of years , not a blemish; but have got 2 speeding fines in the last 2 year and i'm driving like i've got no insurance now ( over cautious)

Starngely, the points last for three years, but they are kept on your license for four years! ............don't ask me

There was a similar rumour going round that if you were born 1990 or later you had to wait until you were 18, but it wasn't true.
Nationwider Posted 6 July 2007 Posted 6 July 2007 Starngely, the points last for three years, but they are kept on your license for four years!............don't ask me True. I had 12 points in my licence recently, but they were spread over a 4-year period. ....and for insurance purposes, they are interested in the last five years, usually. I believe the slate is wiped clean when you complete a ban for 12 pts. As for being asked to attend a speeding seminar, that depends on the individual constabulary. Where I live - no f'ing chance.

I went to a ''speed awareness course'' just before Xmas, I was doing 35 in a 30 zone. Upto 34 you get away with it, 35& 36 you get offered the course, after that you take the points.

I stand to be corrected on this but I think with static cameras, the 10%+2mph rule counts. But with handheld cameras, they can do you at anything above the prescribed limit. I certainly know of someone who was given 3pts+£60 for 32mph. I should really do some research on this because I'm really whistling near the wind, points-wise. Needless to say, I regard Cleveland Traffic Police in roughly the same light as the KKK, Pol Pot and Adolph Hitler.

It still costs you £60 and a day off work and it's the most tedious b0llox you'll ever hear. Still it's better than the points.
Thracian Posted 6 July 2007 Author Posted 6 July 2007 Thanks to all of you for taking the trouble to reply.
Hullfox Posted 6 July 2007 Posted 6 July 2007 At the end of the day, we all know what the rules are. Regardless of how distasteful the law or policing is, that's how it is. If you get banned for whatever reason, you deserve to be off the road. End of. And yes, I do nigh on 50,000 miles a year and I have points.
