It's a common cliche used by the media and fans a like but does performance ever matter more than the result.

When was the last time you heard or said and meant never mind the result as long as we were entertained.

It's all a bit ironic really considering that we do actually go to be entertained.

Its strange you bring this up cos i was thinking about the other day.

Result at the end of the day is the most important but take the charlton game for instance if we had lost that playing the way we did i would have been gutted as we deserved the victory, but i would have been pleased with the performance and come away knowing that on another day we could have come away the win.

Performance right now. We've had enough shit to watch over the past 3 years, i want some entertainment and passion. The results will come eventually, and they are doing at least away from home.

End of the day, it's the result which counts. A good performance doesn't always lead to a good result and a bad result usually results in a bad performance. O it's confusing!!!

Result anyway

Right now I'd settle for good performances because I can't see us getting into the playoffs or going down.

But when there's something to play for I'd rather have a crap performance and a win (a la Peter Taylor's early days) than good performances and a defeat.

Results are more important but now we are not going to get relegated/promoted it's the performances that are important - Take QPR for example we won the game 1-0 but the performance was shit & I came away from the game feeling as if we had lost it.

Yes, but if we'd have lost it not only would you have been feeling shit but the club would have been in the shit league position wise.

It's a results business, so obiously results come first. You can use the performances to work with motivation and squad morale, and encourage the fans, but it doesn't get you points.

I'd rather get into the playoffs with the next 15 or so games being scrappy 1-0 wins, than stay where we are with amazing performances and unlucky results.

Problem is we want to 'have our cake and eat it'.

I would go with 'result' however, as Shen says, it's a results business.

It's strange, because under Adams' the performances were dire, and if we did get a result, we were still left wanting a better performance over the points!

Performance, as we cannot win everymatch good performances will in turn breed confidence and then results will follow.

Good results make good team spirit (see chelsea)

This is a MON trade mark.

The result on saturday was the main thing for a variety of reasons, financial etc but I would rather see perform to this standard at home now.

Marketing get the house full against forest and give us the perfrormance we deserve at home.

On a one game basis it is important to get the result but over a sustained period of time you will not get the results unless you are putting in the performances. That is why it is not absurd to moan about bad performances when winning and to be pleased by good performances when results are not what they might be.

I've always considered the entertainemnt in football to be in the drama, it is not a circus show.

I just think that if a team plays poor football it is impossible to retain good results over a long period of time.

Saying the result is more important is a contradiction in terms. We all want city to win, we all want city to get promoted, why? so we can watch better football ie: better performances. which is as tricky trev says better entertainment. so it has to be performance. This coupled with the fact that good performances to lead to better results. which inevitably leads to better entertainment.

It has to be performance, because as said football is entertainment and very few of us would go if it was not entertaining, the result is the icing on the cake.

I agree we could accept a poor performance better if we win. But how many of us would go to watch a boring sport because of results. IMO very few.
