DanTheFoxBhoy Posted 18 September 2007 Posted 18 September 2007 http://foxestrust.co.uk/site/index.php?opt...19&Itemid=2 Leicester MP Calls for Debate on Safe Standing Written by Matt Davis Monday, 17 September 2007 Today the Foxes Trust received the following press release from Leicester South MP and Foxes Trust member Peter Soulsby. MP calls for Sports Minister to open debate on safe-standing at football grounds Leicester South MP Peter Soulsby is renewing his call for a public debate on whether safe-standing areas should be introduced into football grounds. Earlier this year Peter Soulsby met local football supporters and backed calls for consideration to be given to proposals to introduce safe areas for spectators to stand. The MP, whose constituency includes the Walkers Stadium, has signed a Parliamentary motion calling for the Government to enter into a meaningful dialogue with supporters’ organizations, the FA, Premier League and football clubs on this issue. Foxes supporter Peter Soulsby has now written to the Sports Minister, Gerry Sutcliffe MP, urging him to give consideration to this. The MP signed Early Day Motion 101 which states: That this House urges the Government to re-examine the case for introducing small, limited sections of safe standing areas at football grounds; further urges the Government to recognise that there is widespread support for such areas, and that improvements in stadium design and technology mean that with rigorous safety specifications standing areas could be safely re-introduced; and calls on the Minister concerned to convene a meeting of representatives of the police, supporters, Premier League clubs and the Football Licensing Authority to find a way forward. Peter Soulsby MP said…… “Crowd safety is naturally the number one issue but with modern developments in stadium design and crowd policing I believe we should be looking to explore the possibility of introducing safe-standing areas. Many supporters are demanding this and I believe the Government and the football authorities should be listening to these concerns and enter into a proper dialogue. Local supporters in Leicester have told me they would support the re-introduction of standing areas at grounds and I want their voice to be heard.†Steven Powell, director of policy & campaigns for the Football Supporters’ Federation, added: “More power to Sir Peter’s elbow for listening to the football supporters’ amongst his constituents. Leicester City supporters clearly want the choice to sit or stand in safety. We hope that Sir Peter’s intervention, along with that of many other MPs, will help get a common sense solution to this problem. Football supporters deserve to be treated as grown-ups. Here’s one MP who clearly agrees.†Good stuff. Keeps the pressure on.
Lovejoy Posted 18 September 2007 Posted 18 September 2007 Quality this would be awesome. Would take ages to pass through though.
Kilworthfox Posted 18 September 2007 Posted 18 September 2007 Fantastic news! If clubs had a standing area then people would not complain about other fans who want to stand. I can appreciate how elder fans or those who are used to their comfort are unhappy with other who stand around in a seated area. If a safe environment was created I don't believe there would be any problems. I believe that the standing areas should be smaller than they used to be, and also that there should be a realistic capacity and that should be enforced with no exception. Remember the Hillsborough disaster was not down to standing but poor treatment of fans and no restriction on people in a confined space.
Floating Fox Posted 19 September 2007 Posted 19 September 2007 Great news, the campaign gathers pace.
Webbo Posted 19 September 2007 Posted 19 September 2007 http://foxestrust.co.uk/site/index.php?opt...19&Itemid=2Populist bullshit. Good stuff. Keeps the pressure on. I bet the willy puller's never been to a football match.
Simi Posted 19 September 2007 Posted 19 September 2007 Great news. Hopefully we will get some feedback from this and then send a representative from the club. Andy I presume you have posted this on SUSD?
lcfc_jme Posted 19 September 2007 Posted 19 September 2007 Standing at football is bad. People have their view blocked by unruly supporters and it is totally unfair on them. Furthermore, standing leads to an increase in violent behaviour and disorder. It is 100% essential for ALL supporters to sit down at the football to ensure a safe environment for everyone in attendance. I think re-opening this debate is a complete farce.
Ultra Posted 19 September 2007 Posted 19 September 2007 I bet the willy puller's never been to a football match. He hasn't. I know this for a fact. It's a promise he knows he'll never have to honour..

They just used the standing excuse so they could scrap it.
Mort Posted 20 September 2007 Posted 20 September 2007 Good stuff. Keeps the pressure on.I bet the willy puller's never been to a football match. Nope and nor has he ever really followed football, its posturing but all politicans do it i suppose.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 20 September 2007 Posted 20 September 2007 If I remember correctly, didn't Soulsby vehemently oppose the building of the Walkers Stadium? LCC have been undermining and holding back Leicester sport for decades (proposed move to Beaumont Leys in the 70s quashed, Grandby Halls and Blackbird Road knocked down, Filbert St and Welford road expansion consistently denied, Walkers Stadium hotly opposed), but when something happens like the 1997 "triple" footie/rugger/cricket success, they are only too quick to applaud the success that occured "despite" of them, rather than any thanks to them. This is just another example of that from Peter "Always-Picked-Last"* Soulsby * Well it would explain it!
Kilworthfox Posted 20 September 2007 Posted 20 September 2007 Correct. It was down to the police, letting to many people in. They just used the standing excuse so they could scrap it. correct Berto

Before berating the bloke, isn't it worth finding out if he has been asked to speak out on this?

I think I recall Standupandsing having some dialogue with him not so long ago on this matter.

The more MP's that speak out in favour of standing, the better as far as I'm concerned. I don't care whether they've been to games or not. Surely it's time to look at the issue again. It's a bandwagon, I'm going to ride it.
Sparky Posted 21 September 2007 Posted 21 September 2007 soulsby was a teacher at my school , a football man he is not but any support will help i suppose
