Choosing the right University

Recommended Posts

Ok, so I know it's a bit early, but I want to start thinking about what University I'm gonna be going to.

Well actually I do have reasons. I have to hand my 6th form application in by christmas, and so I need to know what subjects I'm going to need to study.

So, I'm hoping to do some sort of Computer Science degree, but I'm not sure exactly what yet.

I'll go to University anywhere in England and, not wanting to sound big-headed, my results will be very high.

So, if anyone can help then it would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Have you tried talking to Connexions or any careers advisors at your school/college? They're actually trained to help you try and decide these sorts of things, y'know?! For somebody as bright as yourself, I thought that would have been the first port of call..

You've not even taken your GCSE's yet and your already predicting your A Level results?

:/

A lot to learn yet I think, obviously not just to do with school...

Well I am going to be doing that, but I thought it might be a good idea to get opinions of lots of people as well.

Also, does anyone know what Leicester University is like for Computer Science? From what I've read it doesn't seem too bad

Ok, maybe I worded that one a bit wrong. I'll try and say this without sounding like I'm boasting. At the moment, with modular tests in science and maths, and internal exams I'm getting A*s. I'm not the kind of person who is going to settle for poor results that are going to affect the rest of my life, so what I'm trying to say is that I'm really going to work hard on my A levels and hopefully I should come out at the end with very good results.

Ok, I know how it sounds but I just want some help with choosing my subjects.

At the moment what I have in mind is:-

Maths,

Physics,

ICT,

Computing,

Cisco networking.

Any advice?

Mate it's great that you want to go to university, really it is. But you've got to make sure you pass your GCSE's before going on to pass your A-Levels. You might want to decide on the courses you wish to do and the college you wish to do them at first. How bright did you say you were again?!

I do IT A Level at the moment. Enjoying it a lot actually. If you want to do a Computer related course at Uni definitely do a computer course at A Level.

Computing is more to do with programming etc I think, whereas my IT course is based on designing a system using VLOOKUP and IF functions.

For A Level, definitely choose subjects you enjoy doing and will be able to work at.

ICT is wank. If you have the option to do CS and you have a mathematical bent then go for it, it'll serve you better at Uni.

Maths and Physics are excellent choices as they are the only two proper subjects you could study at school.

It is proven fact that those who are good at Physics, Maths and CS are more attractive to the opposite sex, are funnier than anyone else in school and lead long and successful lives.

People who study arty subjects or the humanities simply end up on drugs, in prostitution or victims of car crashes.

I took maths, physics, computing and further maths at AS, and dropped further maths for my A2's this year.

I believe some universities require you to take a physical science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics) - So Physics would be a good choice.

Computing does revolve around programming and learning how the computer works from the inside, and as you said you were looking at Computer Science, this would be a good choice in my opinion.

Maths and Physics combined will aid you if you change your mind as they're quite difficult subjects. Plus it's a good platform for Engineering which is an extremely large discipline!

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Wait till you start the write up  It's an actual bitch. Mine was like 140 pages long, although to be fair that was about 80 pages of implementation, with is just screen shots, with annotations explaining each step.

What are you doing for that btw? I did a theatre booking system for mine, it was average, and that's not what even gets you the marks.

I got a B in my coursework in the end, suprising really.

Sounds decent, wish I'd have thought of something like that. Mine had too many macro's in lol

Have you got a real end user? or a "REAL" end user? lol

Well it's sort of HMV at the minute.

I've emailed them and what not, but some snotty nosed cow seems to want to give me the same computerized reply every time I try to ask her to fill in my questionnaire.

So I took the liberty to fill it in for her...

Don't do it. I have one. Seriously it is a dying degree in an industry that has plenty of work, but is stagnating. I would do Law or Accountancy with a view to doing Corporate Law or Finance. :);)
