OI DAGGERS (topic formerly known as 'lookydo')

Oi, Daggers!

What happened to Sayonara linux (or whatever it was called)?

I see you've reverted to plastering yourself (read: avatar, signature) in Ubuntu again.

I am liking Gutsy Gibbon an awful lot at the moment...with a plastering of Satanic Edition.

linux is great for servers

as a workstation, they are far too complex for the aveage user, the fonts look absoulutely, the desktop are the ugliest by far (vista and osx look 100x nicer) and all the people that think their L337 linux install with 100 virtual desktops look nice generally have no concept of design or style.

the range of software is useless for a normal person that doesn't want to use emacs for everything - open office is horrible to use compared to office 2007, (ever tried doing a simple mail merge, its a nightmare of tedium), and there are simply no viable alternatives to things like illustrator, fireworks, photoshop, flash, indesign, quark etc.

my 2p ;)

Absolute nuts.

GIMP is more than adequate for the average user, who will never gain more than a tenth of Photoshop's potential. That said - how many people do you know that have individually stumped up for a copy of "illustrator, fireworks, photoshop, flash, indesign, quark etc."?

I know plenty of people that use those packages - but I have had to supply them with copies of all of them!

Sabayon and The Gibbon have lovely desktops...Vista would kill for the 3D effects.

Open Office? Well, aside from the fact that the bugger is totally free - the only knock back is a tad of effort on the part of the user to learn a different interface from the Microsoft.

I'd carry on and be more coherent but I am seven pints into not having to get up in the morning.

Vista can suck my handily portable hard drive data storage.

i dont use vista btw, just a nicely modded XP pro..

The gimp has a horrible horrible UI and is completely useless for work, it might be OK for a casual user but it isn't comparable to photoshop in any way. As someone that uses a computer for work and heavily uses Adobe CS etc. linux isn't much use at all to me, so perhaps I am bias.

Open Office is free, yes, but the average office user would find office 2007 an awful lot easier to use.

In a business environment (which accounts for a massive section of the computing market), getting free software that is harder to use actually costs more money if it takes employees days to figure out. And the average home user would have a clue how to install linux, let along use it and spent countless hours on the web and usenet and compiling drivers trying to get their hardware to work.

I'm pissed.

Verey pissed.

There, that's the caveat out the way - No GIMP isn't comparable to PS - but PS costs bollocks more than GIMP...which, for anypone that isn't a professional, is all they need. Therefore Windows offers no advantage to as good as everyone that walks into PC World o that score.

People do find Office easier - because they have grown with the interface - but that does not mean they should stay with it. And, considering the vast change between the last two versions of Office, your final point about cost is nullified due to the cost of sending staff on retraining courses.

For anything other than professional package use or gaming there is no justifiable reason to carry on with Windows other than familiarity.

And by familiarity I mean stupidity.

Incredible recall capacity for a chap who's pissed out of his tree. :D

What the hell was last night about?

Was there a football match or something?

And, why did I wake up in the doorway to Morrisons clutching a rose in my arse cheeks?

Bloody beta versions

Why did I bother? I thought it'd be really good to have a newer Ubuntu and now I don't have wireless or sound. Stupid, stupid me.

Geekiness deserves this. :giggle:

Oi, Daggers,

I'm playing around in Ubuntu 8... it's ace.

Only thing is, and I'm probably missing something obvious here, that my FireFox 3 displays FoxesTalk in a very disappointing fashion... it shows what can only be described as a size 3 font. If I do a CTRL + Scroll Up job on it, I bring it up to a more reasonable size without totally busting all the tables, but this isn't an ideal solution. Is it the same for you, or am I missing something obvious?

I had the same problem when I did the last install - and went into the general display settings option in the command menu and a fix - it still wasn't perfect as the typeface was a crappy font which I couldn't seem to change without spending more time than I cared to on it.

I've just had to do a reinstall of XP - so it's wiped Ubuntu off the disk and it'll probably stay removed until I buy a replacement computer and have this one as the Linux one in the house...I'm thinking an iMac may make an appearance in Casa de Me very shortly.
