LeeCovFox Posted 14 January 2008 Posted 14 January 2008 I'm a fan of Rugby League and just thought I'd check and see who else might be on FoxesTalk. I much prefer it to Union but I'm worried about the whole franchise thing that comes into effect as of the 2009 season. For those of you that are interested from 2009, the European Super League is introducing a franchise system, in which 12 places will be up for grabs. No promotion or relegation will take effect, or at least not in any conventional manner. Instead, every three years, there will be a review of franchise licenses, with all sides who meet financial and stadia related, eligible to apply for a franchise, and thus a place in the Super League for the following three years. This for me is a bad idea, the Americanisation, and bastardisation of a sport that I love to watch. The team which I follow, St. Helen's, are in danger of not recieving a franchise, due to ground capacity not being high enough. They have been the most successful club since the inception of the Super League format. Surely this cannot be right? I believe a similar proposal was made in Rugby Union not so long ago, with the possibility of the Tigers being relocate to Coventry "for a more central location" was floated, although the RFU deied press reports suggesting any intention of franchising the sports top league. Dues anybody on here believe that this could be a possiblility with football in the future? My first thought on that are no, fans wouldn't stand for it. But then I look at my stance on Rugby League, and know that as much as I disagree with what is happening, I'll still be watching in 2009. This applies even more for football. I could never stop watching it. And this, I fear, is where the powers that be, the foreign investors, particularly those from over the Atlantc with little understanding of the nature of sport outside of tehe United States, may well have us fans by the short and curlies.
Webbo Posted 14 January 2008 Posted 14 January 2008 I prefer rugby league to union, but I can't say that I follow it enough to called myself a fan.

Joe. Posted 14 January 2008 Posted 14 January 2008 WORST . SPORT . EV-ER. Harsh. But it's true, it's not better than Union I don't think. Then again I would say that seeing as Leicester dosn't have a Rugby League team. It's all them 'oop North that have them

My youngest son might have an American fiance and she's truly lovely, but I hate the Americanisation of anything. The yanks love basketball and baseball because they haven't got the patience to go more than a few minutes without a change in the score. They'd love football if we'd make the goals twice as wide and twice as high, play with 8 a side, shrink the pitch and if games finished 18-10 or something and they could negotiate six commercial breaks per half when matches are on telly. If rugby league fans want to save their game they should get together and get militant although I'm not convinced that today's relatively comfortable and cossetted people care enough to take that sort of stance about anything any longer. Anyway, I hope you win because it pisses me off big time and it's just the sort of shit that could certainly happen in football as Chandler mentioned not many months back. Why do you think the big-money men are all getting themselves handily positioned? It's not because they suddenly love the sport. Lots of em don't even love their wives and kids. They love money and power and prestige and being able to think they're better than the next man. They love it because of televisions big money and the massive financial opportunities globalisation of the game offers. They are not football fans though some pretend to be. They're opportunists some of whom quite like watching and being involved in football. Money! It's a cancer at times. If there are people would prostitute their own kids for cash there's no way people will mind destroying the soul of a sport for as many readies as they can get their grubby hands on.
placidcasual Posted 14 January 2008 Posted 14 January 2008 The yanks love basketball and baseball because they haven't got the patience to go more than a few minutes without a change in the score. Huh. You think the septics would be well into cricket then........ What an ignorant statement.
placidcasual Posted 14 January 2008 Posted 14 January 2008 Used to live next door to the Willows in Salford whilst at Uni. Only game I went to though was when they beat Wigan in the Challenge Cup in 96(I think). First time Wigan had lost in the Challenge Cup for a while.
