Bellend Sebastian Posted 18 February 2008 Posted 18 February 2008 That's a conclusion I'm quickly coming too...along with revising my budget. I reckon £150 per component is a good start. Incidentally, my Cambridge DAB tuner has been marvellous so far
Bellend Sebastian Posted 18 February 2008 Posted 18 February 2008 Heh, I used that picture as the inside cover of a compilation I did for my mates at Christmas. I'd love to know what the 3 Mighty Tiny records are

Mickey O'Neil Posted 18 February 2008 Posted 18 February 2008 Rotels are fantastic value for money. I had an RC970 pre with two RB970 running in mono. You can pick these up really cheap now, although I understand this may be out of budget for you, but just keep an eye on fleabay or freeads papers just in case I've still got a Rotel CD player that I use now until I save enough for a Wadia or Levinson. Also had some Musical Fidelity power amps (my hi-fi below) with B&W speakers. I often change between my speakers, although I've had my Monitor Audio speakers out the attic for a while now. Hi-Fi for me is as addictive as tattoos! I've spent well over 10 grand over the years chopping and changing stuff. Spaghetti Junction! Not being sexist, but this is not very female-friendly!
Lillehamring Posted 18 February 2008 Posted 18 February 2008 (...and I'm looking at you here Smudge)Can I get "good" separates for under £100 a piece? I'm after an amp, a DAB and a CD player to begin with...and a turntable would be nice. Richer Sounds advertise cheap stuff - but is it crap? i can't imagine you would, but it depends on what you mean by 'good'? i just bought a marantz amp for not much over (go somewhere like leicester hi-fi, in st martins, i got him to knock at least 25% off this amp, and some b&w speakers (not those little gay ones, jesus has * ) - i have DM602 s3's superb) but that is the only advice i took from the salesman, that a good pair of speakers will last you for donkeys years, so if you up your budget, do it for your speakers! i even run an 18 year old kenwood CD player and an old (davieG's ) garrard turntable through it, and all sounds lovely... *actually on the second pick they may be the same, do you have odd speakers JQ?

I sell Mark Levinson and my best advice is leave it alone, the company has been in turmoil for two years. If you want musicality you cannot beat Linn or Naim. If you like B&W you should check out the CM7's. I have never seen a system with different speakers before........

Do yourself a real favor, borrow a decent CD player fom your friendly shop and try it; your system will come alive...I might not add too much to this forum but this stuff I know.
Daggers Posted 18 February 2008 Author Posted 18 February 2008 Wow. I feel like my Dad when he discovered that gramophones no longer played 78's and didn't need winding up; I never factored in inflation into my budget.

Mickey O'Neil Posted 19 February 2008 Posted 19 February 2008 I have never seen a system with different speakers before........ They're not! I swap my speakers around. The old DM600's sound better than the S3's (proves that ugly hi-fi sounds good!). I'm not using either of these at the moment, I'm using a pair of Monitor Audios again.
