Daggers Posted 18 February 2008 Posted 18 February 2008 (...and I'm looking at you here Smudge) Can I get "good" separates for under £100 a piece? I'm after an amp, a DAB and a CD player to begin with...and a turntable would be nice. Richer Sounds advertise cheap stuff - but is it crap?
Asha Posted 18 February 2008 Posted 18 February 2008 She's not online right now, Daggers. Smudge is a she?
James. Posted 18 February 2008 Posted 18 February 2008 (...and I'm looking at you here Smudge)Can I get "good" separates for under £100 a piece? I'm after an amp, a DAB and a CD player to begin with...and a turntable would be nice. Richer Sounds advertise cheap stuff - but is it crap? Thought this was a query for AoWW at first!! Cambridge Audio is very good. I have a CD and Amp made by them. If you check independent reviews you'll see they are highly rated. Be wary of Gale Speakers though. These are (like Cambridge Audio) a Richer Sounds only brand but I was not terribly impressed with them. I got persuaded by the (admittedly knowledgeable) guy in the store before I knew they were specifically pushing their own stuff. Bear in mind my amp and CD cost about £250 a piece but as far as I know their cheaper stuff is still very good quality for the money. My system cost about £700 in all but I'll be looking to upgrade the speakers fairly soon.
lookwhaticando Posted 18 February 2008 Posted 18 February 2008 Private joke. Sort of. Dags would get it. I think... HA! Someone else did at least. Ignore it at will. I encourage you to.
AoWW Posted 18 February 2008 Posted 18 February 2008 Pfft, I got all excited... then what a let down. Now you're expecting me to know about technical stuff. Not a chance. Amps 'n' stuff.... they just make tuunnnees loud don't they?
The People's Hero Posted 18 February 2008 Posted 18 February 2008 I get it. I had to think about it. Part of an exclusive club, me. Oh and Hi Fi!
Daggers Posted 18 February 2008 Author Posted 18 February 2008 I didn't get it. I'm a bit thick. Got it now though, everyone can stop worrying. What independent sources James Bloo? I've no idea where to look.
Nationwider Posted 18 February 2008 Posted 18 February 2008 My authority on 'i-fi tells me that when it comes to separates, the uglier looking the better.
Daggers Posted 18 February 2008 Author Posted 18 February 2008 My authority on 'i-fi tells me that when it comes to separates, the uglier looking the better. That's what I was told about 'wives' - hence my hunt for a better authority this tim...*ow!*...this time aro...*ow!* Mr.Daggers would like to state that he thinks his wife is very pretty and stuff and in no way resembles the South Bank in London.
Smudge Posted 18 February 2008 Posted 18 February 2008 (...and I'm looking at you here Smudge)Can I get "good" separates for under £100 a piece? I'm after an amp, a DAB and a CD player to begin with...and a turntable would be nice. Richer Sounds advertise cheap stuff - but is it crap? Right then.......... I had a look at Richer Sounds and they carry NAD, which is a good, simple, well made product. I used to carry it but changed to Rotel for strategic reasons not because they aren't any good. I think they are better with their stereo stuff than surround sound. They also carry Marantz but I don't recommend them for this purpose. Both of those companies are going to cost in excess of 100 pounds a piece. All of the other cheap stuff I can't comment on, since I haven't heard it. Even if your budget is limited, do listen to Rotel and moreover, Rega. Rega has a great line of turntables, The Apollo CD player and Mira Integrated Amp. One thing I would exaggerate is that you have to audition the products. leave the family at home you want no distractions. Music Matters on the Hagley Rd carry both Rega and Rotel, take only a few CD's and play maybe 2/3 tracks from each and maybe no more that 90 seconds of each one. Just keep repeating the process until you hear that sould that you're happy with. Beware of te salesman tempting you to listen to something better, it will be, and will spoil you. The most important piece is the source, whether its a turntable or CD player, if can't get the information out of the record or CD player the rest and worth a row of beans. You might consider buying used pieces especially a turntable and amplification; have a look at www.audiogon.com E-mail me if you want more advice
danny. Posted 18 February 2008 Posted 18 February 2008 My authority on 'i-fi tells me that when it comes to separates, the uglier looking the better. B&O are lovely though, and sound nice.

lookwhaticando Posted 18 February 2008 Posted 18 February 2008 Thought this was a query for AoWW at first!! Pfft, I got all excited... then what a let down. Hi Fi! About me?? WTF Nope. Do the above quotes make it a little clearer?
Smudge Posted 18 February 2008 Posted 18 February 2008 Nope. Do the above quotes make it a little clearer? Only if her name is Fiona
Bellend Sebastian Posted 18 February 2008 Posted 18 February 2008 My trusty Rotel amp is 16 years old and still going strong, bar needing a bit of switch cleaner and the odd fuse now and then. Still sounds pretty good. My Marantz CD player is 15 and is closer to Hifi heaven than the Rotel but to say it's high mileage would be an understatement
potter3 Posted 18 February 2008 Posted 18 February 2008 Well from that I gathering that AoWW name is Fi sommething? like Fiona
Trav Le Bleu Posted 18 February 2008 Posted 18 February 2008 Under £100 each? Sure - go secondhand. Not necessarily the dodgy shops that line Narboro Rd, but ads in papers and stuff - hi-fi peeps are always looking to upgrade and will understand that you want to listen to the equipment before you buy (though of course if may (ok, will) sound different in your set-up) I bought a NAD amp 10 years ago that is still going strong in my 2ndry hi-fi. Sherwood amps are good too. Buy a copy of What Hi-fi, read it, especially the ratings tables, and make your choices.
Daggers Posted 18 February 2008 Author Posted 18 February 2008 In my day, you just needed a mint and you could breath underwater for, like, ever.
Daggers Posted 18 February 2008 Author Posted 18 February 2008 Buy a copy of What Hi-fi, read it, especially the ratings tables, and make your choices. That's a conclusion I'm quickly coming too...along with revising my budget.
