placidcasual Posted 15 November 2008 Posted 15 November 2008 Off to MLS Cup final for the first time in club history. Fire were doused 2-1 last night.
placidcasual Posted 15 November 2008 Posted 15 November 2008 Pandemonium after the equaliser Somewhere in the middle of this are the players
Jordan Posted 15 November 2008 Posted 15 November 2008 ESC does "We love you..." too, but it sounds a lot better when there are more than 75 people singing it. Crew best team in MLS this season, no doubt about it, and they deserve a place in the final. It'd be funny if RBNY makes it into the MLS Cup Final as Western Conference champions, but I don't think we'd mind. I'm not sure if I'm gonna go down and watch the game on TV in the city tomorrow night because I really ought to get plenty of sleep over the next week while I get ready for a half-marathon in Philadelphia next Sunday. I'll probably be on the road on my way home during the final, but I signed up for this a while back and TBH I wasn't planning on Metro making it that far

placidcasual Posted 16 November 2008 Posted 16 November 2008 New York somehow win through to play Columbus........ Salt Lake hit the post 3 times and seemed to have about 80% possession.......

Jordan Posted 16 November 2008 Posted 16 November 2008 The New York Red Bulls, who had one win in 15 away games during the regular season, are in MLS Cup 2008 after pulling their second away win in this postseason out of their asses last night. I know three games is a small sample size, but this mini-run by Metro is improbable. This is a historically underachieving (cursed, perhaps?) franchise that continued its lackluster play through most of this season. With two games to go in the regular season and their playoff hopes hanging in the balance, their starting keeper and perhaps their top defender got 10-game suspensions for violating MLS's drug policy, which would fit right in with the long list of great fook-ups in MetroStars/Red Bulls history. But they bring in this rookie named Danny Cepero, who'd never played a minute in MLS, to play goal, and not only does he make a couple of incredible saves, but actually scores a lucky goal and leads Metro to a win over league-leaders Columbus to keep their playoff hopes alive. These sorts of things just don't happen to the Metro, but they did this time. But in the last game, coach Juan Carlos Osorio puts out a ridiculous lineup that gets smacked by Chicago, 5-2, leaving them to wait until the last day of the season hoping DC wouldn't beat Columbus and overtake them for the last playoff spot. They didn't, and Metro snuck in the back door (and in the Western Conference playoffs). This sort of thing just doesn't happen to Metro, but it did this time. There was no way they could have beaten two-time defending champions Houston Dynamo. But they held on to a 1-1 draw at home in the first leg and shocked Houston with a 3-0 away win in the second after a few fortunate counterattacks and brilliant saves from Cepero. And last night, all they needed was one counterattack ... and then holding on to dear life for about 65 minutes. Salt Lake had Metro under siege, but somehow--whether it be one of Cepero's great saves, a hard-fought clearance, the help of the woodwork (which Salt Lake hit three or four times, including at the stroke of death) or their opponent's inept finishing--the ball stayed out of the net. These sorts of things just don't happen to Metro, but it did last night. So now, against all odds, the New York Red Bulls have a chance to be crowned MLS Cup Champions if they can just squeeze out one more upset against the heavily-favored Columbus Crew. This franchise has never won a single piece of legitimate silverware since it and MLS began play in 1996. This sort of thing just doesn't happen to Metro, but on Sunday, just maybe... I will send you texts live and direct from the Home Depot Centre...... Cheers for that--but please don't spend too much time texting the enemy... you've got a final to enjoy!
AmericanScott Posted 16 November 2008 Posted 16 November 2008 YES! Completely forgot about the game. I'm stunned we've made it. Quick facts about Red Bull New York: - Orginally named New York/New Jersey Metrostars - Play at the Meadowlands (home of the Giants and Jets American football teams). It has an 80,000 capacity but it rarely gets filled up. (I think it was nearly sell out when England played Columbia there a few years ago. The fans were allowed to stay and watch the Metrostars take on Columbus or Chicago, don't remember which one) - The first and only North American team to win a cup outside of North America. Winning the La Manga cup in 2005 i think. - Juan Pablo Angel! - No domestic trophies, sadly. - Main rivals are DC United and New England - Carlos Quieroz, former Man Utd asst. manager was manager back in 1996. - This is the first season we'll be in the MLS Cup final. GO NEW YORK!
AmericanScott Posted 23 November 2008 Posted 23 November 2008 I would like to to take the chance to congratulate Columbus on winning the MLS Cup 2008. Reason why: New York mayor Michael Bloomberg has made a friendly wager bet with Columbus mayor over the winner. The last time Bloomberg made a wager like this was in 2003 in the World series (baseball). The New York Yankees got the poo smashed out of them by new boys Florida Marlins. Bye bye MLS title

AmericanScott Posted 23 November 2008 Posted 23 November 2008 They show some games like twice a week on channel 5 at around 4am! Just watch the highlights on the website, it's easier http://www.mlsnet.com

MC Prussian Posted 24 November 2008 Posted 24 November 2008 Columbus Crew!!! And I was there (alongside Placidcasual and 999 others in Black & Gold)! Pictures to follow soon... Took a whole bunch of them... Well done to the Crew - deserved 3-1 winners and MLS Cup holders 2008!!!
purpleronnie Posted 24 November 2008 Posted 24 November 2008 Well done crew fully deserved. Here's to next season I hope I'll be beack in Houston next year, Fully enjoyed every minute its great to have so much freedom inside a football stadium with people at a club who want the fans to be noisy and colourful. Its back to drab and dull england in less than a week, where sneezing inside a stadium gets you arrrested these days.

I agree, the Home Depot Center is quite a nice football ground with loads of room to roam through. I found the security respectful and laid-back, although I got reprimanded for standing on the bench twice towards the end of the game. The Crew fans had some support from a few Chivas people who did an excellent job at drumming. As for New York and their Red Bulls, at no point during the game did they pose a real threat. They were simply too weak - no wonder, after making the playoffs at the very end of the season, I wouldn't have expected otherwise. I loved the after-game celebration, and got to shake Frankie Hejduk's hands when he came up the stairs to do a little meet-and-greet with the loyal one thousand that made their way to the West Coast. Then the rumour spread the club would host a little celebration, so I met up with Placidcasual at the Marriott in Manhattan Beach. Can't beat free food and free drinks. All in all, an exquisit day out. GO CREW!!
