Matt Posted 28 March 2008 Posted 28 March 2008 Bought one ages ago when I got my PS3 because the modem I was sent when I got AOL wouldn't work, so it was suggested I got a wireless router, basically ever since i've had it, it's never worked properly (I.E - The fact is a "Wireless Router" with wires connecting it to the PS3/Laptop/PC), but I thought my PS3 was working so i'd live with it, well it's hit and miss whether it works anyway but the majority of the time it does. I've phoned the company who manufacturers the routers and they have explained how to make it work correct (Wirelessly) many times but not very simple. Anyway, Come in last night abit pissed up and put my PS3 on, and thought lets try and get this router sorted, I turned the router on, connected it to the phone line, went into my PS3 settings and selected search for connections it found a the wireless router, and worked, I was amazed, and it worked fine, I half expected the connection to be shite, but it surprised me. I tried to get my Laptop sorted on this wireless connection, but that was one step to far, the laptop/router combination didn't want to play (Something about a Local Network Connection and a network cable being unplugged - Correct me if i'm wrong but surly on a wireless connection it should be wireless of course cable's should be unplugged? ) Turned my PS3 on this morning, again the wireless connection on the PS3 was still working fine, switched it off went out, just gone to turn it on now and it doesn't work Tried connecting it again, re-doing the search, it's found the router but apparently there is no internet connection (But the router is saying there is an internet connection) tried plugged it into the Laptop (Because if you connect it up manually it does work on the laptop) but there was no internet connection on that either. Why is it so fecking confusing. And from my vague description's can anyone help or explain what's going on with my router/connection? -Also where has the Foxestalk league gone on Fifa (PS3)? There's a new league which i've joined but what about the original one? Not too bothered...I was doing shite in that league anyway
Joe. Posted 28 March 2008 Posted 28 March 2008 My wireless router does my head in. It's so temperamental, some nights it works fine then others my internet will be dropping in and out every 30 seconds. <_<
Fez of Mahrez Posted 28 March 2008 Posted 28 March 2008 That is such a coincidence. I was about to start a new topic cos my Dads new laptop won't connect to our wireless network and he says he'll wash my car tomorrow if I can get it working before midnight. It's an absolute bastard. It recognises the network but is just stuck on limited or no connectivity - and says (identifying [network name]) rather than just listing the network name - and I can't work out how to get it to connect properly.

Pees everyone else off as well when I keep signing in and out. Anybody else been having any problems with AOL recently? Once a week, for the last 5-6 weeks, my internet hasn't worked. Every time I phone up they say they have a problem but never tell you what it is.

SamL Posted 28 March 2008 Posted 28 March 2008 AOL is shit, from my experiences. Tell me about it. I keep telling my mum but yet, she keeps signing up to it for another year trying to get the best deal. If anybody is reading this, Don't sign up to AOL. They're useless.

Every time I phone up they say they have a problem but never tell you what it is. Not had that problem. AOL hasn't been so bad for me recently but a few months ago was awful (Still isn't the best now, but its ok). Seriously considering going to Sky though, it's cheaper, free wireless modem (A decent one), free set up (Presumably someone coming out and setting your wireless connection up for you?). The only thing that worries me is I don't know anyone who has Sky Broadband, and havn't heard much about it, I suppose you have problems with any internet company, but I don't want to commit to a 12 month contract (Think thats the minimum contract for Sky Broadband) and then find it's awful.

I don't want to do that either. We have the telephone through AOL as well, so we don't really want that to mess up. I've had more problems with AOL than I'd care to remember. The only plus point about AOL is that they offer unlimited useage whereas I'm not sure others do. It's worth shopping about a bit if you ask me.
blue blood Posted 28 March 2008 Posted 28 March 2008 linksys routers are the way forward, they are made by cisco (they are the bugatti of computer networking).

I have had Sky Broadband for about 12 months now, I had an initial problem where it kept dropping the connection every 30 mins for about a week (transition period ) but I have never had a problem since then, I have 3 computers hooked upto it 2 wired, 1 wireless and my ps3 wireless and it runs really smooth! Free Netgear wireless router, and I would never go with anyone else because for the price and service I think it's second to none!
DB11 Posted 29 March 2008 Posted 29 March 2008 It happens to me. All I have to do is turn the router off and then back on again.
Smudge Posted 29 March 2008 Posted 29 March 2008 Try repairing the connection by right clicking on your "Wireless Network Connection" and click on "repair" It will then give you a new IP address which should fix the problem. I used to have that problem but the above procedure didn't work. I eventually sorted it out by first removing the router security temporarily, then at a later connecting with a 10 character WEP.
Smudge Posted 29 March 2008 Posted 29 March 2008 It happens to me.All I have to do is turn the router off and then back on again. That works if you also reboot the modem and finally your computer.
lildave3 Posted 29 March 2008 Posted 29 March 2008 Speaking of modems, how do I find out my password to access it?
Joe. Posted 29 March 2008 Posted 29 March 2008 Speaking of modems, how do I find out my password to access it? Should be on the bottom of the modem?
blue blood Posted 30 March 2008 Posted 30 March 2008 Speaking of modems, how do I find out my password to access it? which router is it?
A fox for life Posted 30 March 2008 Posted 30 March 2008 Bought one ages ago when I got my PS3 because the modem I was sent when I got AOL wouldn't work, so it was suggested I got a wireless router, basically ever since i've had it, it's never worked properly (I.E - The fact is a "Wireless Router" with wires connecting it to the PS3/Laptop/PC), but I thought my PS3 was working so i'd live with it, well it's hit and miss whether it works anyway but the majority of the time it does.I've phoned the company who manufacturers the routers and they have explained how to make it work correct (Wirelessly) many times but not very simple. There's a new league which i've joined but what about the original one? Not too bothered...I was doing shite in that league anyway ok the PC bit i think i can solve, because its saying "Local Network Connection and a network cable being unplugged" it most likly means you have your Local Area Connection active (this is the one where you use a cable to your router via ethernet(type of cable)) what you need to do is go into Network connections in the control panel, on the icon Local area connections right click and press disable at the top of the menu, then go to Wireless connection icon right click and enable it! that should sort it. you may have to double left click on the wireless icon and search and connect to the router, that bit is fairly self explanetry. hope that helps.
