PC Problem

Today, on one of the computers i got a message when i tried to load up the PC

''We apologise for the inconveniance but Windows didnt start successfully. A recent software or hardware change might of caused this.

If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose last known configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked.

If a previous startup was interrupted, due to a power failure, or because the power or reset button was pressed, or if you aren't sure what caused the problem, choose start windows normally.

Safe Mode

Safe Mode (networking)

Safe Mode (command prompt)

Last known good configuration (your most recent settings that worked)

Start Windows normally''

That is the message, word for word. now, i've tried all the options and it tries to load, then goes back to the same screen.

Apparently, the last known function of the computer was something to do with Norton GoBack, in which it froze, and was left, and eventually switched off manually.

So you computer wizz's, help me out! Or is it fecked?

Do a system restore and go back a few days. That should solve the problem.

Just log in as safe mode then you can restart your computer. I have had that message several times before and it has never been anything too serious.

Edit: I just reread your post and saw that you had tried several of the options already - so ignore my suggestion!

Do you have:

• a receipt
  
• a warranty
  
• important stuff on the hard drive (not including porn)
  
• an installation disk

As HH said - try rebooting from scratch...but if you can't get past that screen and you don't have a back-up boot source (praise be to the glorious floppy disk) then it's a case of re-installing Windows from disk.

Before you do that wait for an expert opinion on Windows (which I'm far from). If there isn't one forthcoming on here and you have a warranty, take it to the store. If none of those - phone PC World.

What I do know is that Norton is the spawn of Satan and should not be on any system. Ever. Remove it and replace the virus/firewall with a decent free one like Avast!

I get that when I turn my PC off at the mains.

If it goes back to that screen after you select the options (which you say you have) it means it needs to go to the repair shop.

Right so the signs are not good.

And i'm not on the computer thats the *cockney accent* faaaaaaamily PC, im on the trusty laptop.

Thanks for the help everyone, but it seems it is destined for the repair shop as i dont have a fecking clue what to do r.e reinstalling Windows etc....

Avast's website wont load for me, for some reason.

This is the page for Avast! Home Edition - I've just loaded it, it's working.

You will need to register to get free updates for a year - at which point you'll need to apply for another free key. I've been using it for about four years now, it's brilliant.

To install it you need to have removed any other firewall/anti-virus (which means doing it offline after you've downloaded it).

If the site is being blocked (presumably using Microsoft (*spit*) IExplorer) use Firefox.
