Coach Loffreda to pay for Leicester Tigers' slump

EXCLUSIVE By IAN STAFFORD -

Rugby giants Leicester Tigers are set to sack head coach Marcelo Loffreda this week after one of the club's poorest seasons in the professional era.

Leicester's management board meet on Wednesday when the decision to end the Argentine's tenure will be rubber-stamped.

I know that there's not many eggchasers on here but I thought this was worth a mention. It's been a disappointing season but I didn't think that rugger buggers did this sort of thing.

I really can't understand this feeling tbh. Alot of people seem to have it too.

Had a feeling they might be thinking about it to be honest. They don't like not having silverware over at Welford Road.

I was talking to my mate the other night who's a massive Tigers fan about just how we'd view success at the end of the season, sufficed to say it's amazing how differently we viewed success :D

Think they should stick with Loffreda tbh . give him a full season in charge he will do ok

I went to the final against Ospreys and they got hammered. Very poor showing. Im not a fan of rugby but they havent been doing too well of late.

It's not really surprising though is it?

Not a great season in the league, beaten in the EDF final and we didn't even make it past the group stages of the Heineken cup. I don't think many Tigers fans would lose too much sleep if he went tomorrow.

I think they should hire David Platt, he has a great track record as a manager :scarf:

BLUE ARMY! :fox:

The Tigers have definitely underachieved this season.

But it's not entirely Loffreda's fault. A lot of players are suffering from post-World Cup burnout, as they did in 2004.

And unlike his counterpart on the other side of Aylestone Road, he hasn't had the chance to build his own team.

This season has been terrible, to not get into the knock out stages of the European cup for Tigers is really bad. Also for Tigers not to be in the top 2 in the league is pretty bad.

It's a shame because this season, on their day, Tigers can play some of the best Rugby in the country, like the Wasps game in the semi final of the EDF. But on other days they have been pathetic, like the EDF final against Ospreys.

We should have thought about this earlier and maybe got Martin Johnson ;)

Leicester have denied reports that head coach Marcelo Loffreda will be sacked.

The Argentine, who arrived at Welford Road after seven years in charge of his country, has overseen one of the club's worst seasons in the professional era.

It was claimed that a board meeting on Wednesday would be used to rubber-stamp the 48-year-old's dismissal.

But when asked if he expected Loffreda to be sacked, Tigers chief executive Peter Wheeler told BBC Sport: "No. The reports are wrong."

Loffreda, who succeeded Pat Howard at Welford Road after leading Argentina to an unprecedented third place at the 2007 World Cup, arrived with high expectations.

But, despite taking the reins of a team that won the Guinness Premiership and EDF Cup - and were runners-up in the Heineken Cup - last season, Loffreda's first season has not gone to plan.

Leicester, who have won 13 of 23 games under Loffreda, were knocked out of this season's Heineken Cup in the group stages, lost their EDF title to Ospreys and, sitting sixth in the Premiership, are struggling to make the play-offs.

"There has been no discussion on Marcello's position," said Wheeler.

"Rugby World Cup seasons are always difficult because you are always without a significant number of players for the first two or three months of the season.

"Then you've got the problem of reintegrating players into the side and then they go off to the Six Nations.

"It's a pretty difficult role in any case - being a head coach at a Guinness Premiership club - but in a World Cup year it is even more difficult. "We realise the problems people face, especially when they are coming into the job halfway through the season."

Newspaper reports on Sunday alleged that Tigers chairman Peter Tom had held discussions with board members, club coaches and senior players and that the decision to end Loffreda's tenure is considered inevitable.

It was suggested that former Tigers and New Zealand centre Daryl Gibson, currently in charge of Glasgow Warriors, was in line to take over.

But Wheeler added: "As far as we are concerned we have a normal board meeting on Wednesday at which, in the normal way, the performance of the team in the past month will be reviewed.

"There's nothing other than the normal business of the board to be discussed.

"We'll sit down and talk with Marcelo and the other coaches to plan pre-season and recruitment. There's nothing additional to discuss to anything we normally do."

It looks like he might not be leaving after all. :dunno:

Poor journalism. Trust me. Loffreda will not be sacked, my rugby coach played for Tigers and is scout for Tigers in and around Leicester. I've seen him speaking to Loffreda before and I really cannot see him being sacked.

The article that SamL posted yesterday seems to echo that. I must admit I was surprised as rugby people seem to look down their noses at things like that.

Tigers were THREE minutes away today from possibly missing out on a Heineken Cup place, which would have sealed Loffreda's fate.

But their last-gasp win took them into a playoff spot and gives them a shot of retaining the title.

Fans are still not convinced about the Argy though..

With Deano in charge of Harlequins (themselves going for a top 4 spot), it must have been VERY tense!

Loffreda's a proven winner, though. I wouldn't be surprised if we end up retaining the title now.

Well that would be so perfect, just to take advantage of this ridiculous play offs system that they brought in to stop us winning it every year. It's such a ridiculously sh*t idea, what's the point? surely the team who finish top deserve to win, therefore they should get the trophy? Could you imagine it in the football premier league, Liverpool winning the league after finishing 4th lol

It's what they do in the A-League in aussie land now. That's reason enough to know it's shit, surely? :P

If they keep Loffreda, he WILL produce the goods, no doubt.

All he needs is a bit of time to adapt to the style of play, etc. etc.

And Rugby is a completely different game to football and they don't sack managers at the rate they do in football.
