Thracian Posted 17 September 2008 Posted 17 September 2008 So? Many things were acceptable 40 years ago (racism, sexism, child beating, Cliff Richard etc). Doesn't mean any of those things have any bearing on modern day life nowadays.Millwall's strategy of making up for lack of ability with aggression and intimidation may be inevitable in this league but it doesn't mean we should ever laud this type of 'football'. Who's lauding or criticising Millwall? They played with determination and won the game more of less legitimately. Not everyone chooses to play as I would wish. If I was concerned about anything it was their time-wasting, game-slowing tactics which probably did at least as much as their so-called intimidatory tackling to affect the game. And, bottom line, the referee could and should have dealt with that. PS: I do love your concept of what people accepted 40 years ago by the way. How the hell did we survive without spy cameras on every corner? Especially all that child-beating and racial hatred! Not that I ever remember the endless stabbings of kids on our streets even in those so-dangerous days.

Yea - I'd have been incandesant had we bothered to turn up with the same level of tenacity, industry and vigour and matched that at their game of football. Now I'm off to beat my useless black daughter for listening to Cliff Richard.

Misconception I'm afraid. Tommy Smith, Dave Mackay and Norman Hunter were among my most admired defenders at one time. It's when we've got the ball that I like my team to play with style. How physical we are in getting it back doesn't bother me at all so long as players don't get sent off and show some thought and ability when passing it on.
The Reverend Posted 17 September 2008 Posted 17 September 2008 Come on Rev' "terrible tackles?" A "terrible tackle" is like when Danny Guthrie breaks Fagan's leg or the infamous Roy Keane tackle. There was nothing like that. Yes Millwall were determined but so they should be. Forty years ago a good many of Saturday's penalised tackles wouldn't even have been rated as fouls let alone "dirty". Ok Thrac, they werent terrible tackles compared to ones of the past, but they were the sort of tackles that you see players booked for week in, week out nowadays, and there were'nt enough bookings for Milwall in my opinion. Theres a fine line between playing with pace and strength, and taking the piss.
