Millwall Post Match

Not worried by this in the slightest. We were always going to lose games this season, every side has their off days. There has been enough evidence already this season to suggest that we are capable of taking one of the automatic promotion spots, and I remain confident that we will do so. Of course, it is disappointing to have experienced our first defeat at this level, but it is out of the way now. All Nigel Pearson and his staff can do this week is work with the players to rectify the things that went wrong yesterday, and put it to the back of their minds with a victory at Orient next weekend.

To be fair, we looked pretty good for the first 10 minutes or so. We took the game to them, played the ball on the floor and made their defensive pairing look decidedly dodgy when dealing with this.

Then, we got bullied out of it, sunk to their level, and resorted to playing hoofball. Their lumps at the back loved it, fouled us all over the park and the weak ref let them get on with it.

We need to find a way of getting out of these types of situations. Resorting to booting it up the field to Howard, Fryatt and even Gradel :giggle: is not the answer.

We'll come back strong next weekend. If you look at the fixture list for the rest of this month, all games are winnable.

First thing Pearson should work on in training is improving the set-pieces. They were abysmal. We had plenty of corners but not one created any mayhem in their box.

Yeah when we had those five corners in succession, they were getting worse and worse.

Dyer & Gradel's crossing was very poor yesterday.

Oh god yes.

That's certainly one thing Clemence could add if/when he comes back :P

Clemence could do a better job than Oakley did yesterday :P

& another thing that annoys me with our corners, is when Dyer & Gradel start playing the short corners, & always get closed down :@

Dyer's first couple weren't that bad, but the other two were awful, easily cleared by the first man.

Yeah I know mate,

Thats what I meant, they were getting worse as we got another one.

I am a big fan of the out-swinger towards the far post, delivered with pace. Not floated in somewhere near the penalty spot. If it ever gets that far.

Me too Lisa, but we never ever pull it off.

There is absolutely no excuse for putting in shit deliveries one after another. None at all.

It is lazy stuff and doesn't even take much work. About 90% didn't even clear the first man yesterday and that isn't acceptable from these people. Dyer adn Gradel in particular.

So mant wasted chances with the poor corners and free kicks yesterday.

Couldn't agree more, it was driving me mad.

Poor setpieces is a real pet peeve of mine. Any professional footballer should be capable of kicking a stationary ball into a danger area, they're paid to kick footballs for Christ's sake. Fair enough not everyone has the same knack for it as the likes of Beckham but not beating the first man 9 times out of 10 is inexcusable.

.... So let's just get behind the foxes and remember how bad things could have been if Holloway were still in charge.

You mean he isn't? :o

Seriously though, yesterday's result and performance demonstrates that this team is still very much a work in progress. At present, it doesn't have either the mental or physical strength to finish in the top six, let alone win the title. The players' individual and collective weaknesses were brutally exposed by a limited Millwall side who treated the game like their cup final.

In contrast to some of his predecessors, Pearson has chosen to overload the side with youngsters. He must therefore accept responsibility when too many of those youngsters fail to deliver, as was the case yesterday.

Not that the seniors (apart from Howard) set them a particularly good example. Oakley was quality in the early weeks in the season, but has sadly reverted to the liability we saw all too often in the Holloway era. When the going gets tough, he hides. As a captain, he's not even an Ali Mauchlen, let alone a Walsh or an Elliott.

Many hours of hard work should lie ahead of the squad on the training ground this week, with setpieces (defending and attacking) being a priority.

After this setback, a win at Orient is an absolute must.

Lets all pass judgement at Christmas or give it a few more games. I am not going to get all cynical, i am more disappointed that we were not out-played and it was a very winnable match. We played poor and only got beat 1 nil. That is actually quite satisfying as if that is the worst case scenario, we have reasons to be cheerful as long as it is not every week.

We have potential, the talent and the squad. It is whether we can be consistent and live up to our billing. We have demonstrated what we are capable of early on, it is just a case of making sure we deliver. The players need to be professional and not get complacent. They were out-of-sorts and that was probably due to the 2 week break.

It disrupted our rhythm. Lets see what happens this coming Saturday, i am convinced we will see a better performance as that was by far our worst in a long time! Cheer up everyone!

That's the kind of mentality which took us into this league in the first place. :(

Any home defeat at this level is unacceptable - especially when it's as avoidable as this one was. It's not as if Millwall's gameplan, based as it was on brutality and intimidation, could not have been foreseen. After all they've only been playing that way for the past FORTY years.

Pearson and his coaching team should have warned the players what to expect, but clearly didn't. I trust the lesson won't have to be repeated in order to sink in.

The Orient game will show us whether the squad has the character to bounce back, and also whether what we saw yesterday was just a blip, or a disturbing signal of future frustrations.

Bit strong that, every team that comes to the Walkers is going to be up for it.

I do agree the Orient game is a game we've really got to win for moral reasons if nothing else, we've all seen what can happen to this group of players when the get on a bad run.

>_< Beckham is as good as he is because it is something he focuses on and spends time working on whilst his team mates are back home relaxing. It is actually a lesson that many professional players could do with learning from. Beckham is an example of getting out what you put in. He works hard, and has been rewarded for it. :dunno:

One defeat and the 'negative gimps' appear. Come on guys, this maybe a wake up call, it maybe a one off, it maybe because the week off has stiffled our momentum, BUT there is no need for the negativity, this could be just a minor hiccup, bring on the Orient!!

couldn't win against 10 fookin men  pearson out

He was sent off in the injury time doesn't he?

If thats is the case, he is a striker so it won't change the match much apart from our defenders getting a bit of a breather

Unneccesary respone I'm afraid

The out-swinging corners Dyer took made my knickers hot and wet.

I loved them.
