harpendenfox Posted 9 October 2008 Posted 9 October 2008 apparently they are contingency funds held by local councils for the proverbial rainy day. Hopefully they can avoid significant council tax rises by rebuilding these reserves over a number of years. Most councils will have reserves in numerous accounts, thus hopefully diversifing risk. Trouble is in the current situation there are so many disaster stories out there it's nigh on impossible to avoid falling into a trap. So we will need to pay more tax at a central or local level, or see services cut back. Think I'd make a start by withdrawing from military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan at lunchtime, and making all public sector 'directors of diversity' redundant at tea-time. Then tomorrow we'll force all morbidly obese people to go on a diet to save the NHS money. Then we'll reduce by 85% the number of police with poncy head cameras patrolling football grounds. Then we'll disband all regional development agencies (unless anyone can justify what they do). Then we'll reduce the number of PR people working in local education authorities. 30 in my county alone. What the hell do they do.

Jon the Hat Posted 9 October 2008 Posted 9 October 2008 You would think, that money raised through taxation would be held in Govt Bonds. Yet another example of the ridiculous powers held by local government.
Phube Posted 9 October 2008 Posted 9 October 2008 You would think, that money raised through taxation would be held in Govt Bonds. Yet another example of the ridiculous powers held by local government. Too right!!! But @ Nottingham... they had £42 MILLION in 3 Icelandic banks?!?
cisono Posted 21 October 2008 Posted 21 October 2008 All those old people who keep all their cash in a suitcase under the bed cos they don't trust banks might not be so daft after all. ebay offerings have included several "underfloor" safes recently...
