Why wouldn't regular football be doing Garner any good?

I know it's hardly the highest level, but at least it will give him some senior competetive experience.

Sending a young defender to a non league side, should test his courage and toughen him up a bit. It can only do some good imo.

Cannot see anything wrong with either move. I couldn't imagine Garner playing much higher up than Ilkeston at this stage so he should benefit considerably.

It is competitive, combative football although I wouldn't say courage and toughness were particular shortcomings of Garner's.

Passing and distribution would be the main areas of improvement he should concentrate on together with his ability to read the game and to organise the players around him.

Improve those things and develop more sharpness/awareness and who knows, the move might be the making of him.
