Shilts still keeping well

Enjoyed a chance meeting with City goalkeeping legend Peter Shilton in Birmingham yesterday.

I was in the jewellery quarter and Shilts was making a guest appearance in Paul's Emporium at the same time as I'd decided to nip in there to buy a ring.

We chatted for 10 minutes or so reminiscing about days as sixers in the same Braunstone scout troop, training in the old Filbert Street gym, and walking/racing our greyhounds.

He lives close to Leicestershire and said that he was quite enjoying life doing after dinner speaking, guest appearances and so on.

But he certainly didn't sound too impressed by the standard of English goalkeeping

Anyway it was a moment or two to remember, the Emporium proprietor gave a generous discount on the ring and I got a personalised signed picture of England's most capped player as a momento.

I doubt my next visit will be so memorable. :D

Third best keeper to play for this club, after Banks and Flowers

Well, I only ever saw Flowers, so I can't debate this.

Although surely 125 caps Peter is better than few caps Tim?

It was said in jest. Shilton is probably level with Banks in terms of our greatest keeper. Thrac, I think, saw both and he'll know much better.

There will always be arguments about whether Banks or Shilton was better but Flowers didn't come close from anything I saw.

Shilton's positioning, shot stopping, surprising agility for a big man and his sheer presence were something else and his dedication to training and improving every aspect of his game has probably never been bettered.

I whacked many a shot at Shilton when he was 15/16 and the lad simply amazed me. With most youngsters of that age people wondered if they would perhaps make the first team. In Shilton's case there was never any doubt that he would play for England never mind Leicester.

I was a regular in the days of Banks and Shilts. Without a doubt, Banks had more authority in the box than Shilts. And, who will ever forget his wonder save from Pele! So, it has to be Banks.

I remember watching him play for City Boys once, at Filbert St. Think it was the English Schools cup final?

Don't forget Mark Grew.

Shilts life became a mess, barred from The Bulls Head in Woodhouse Eves for being pissed all the while, houses reposesed, banned from all race courses for not paying his debts and of course getting caught with Tina and his pants down.

I dont really know if Shilts was the best ever keeper for city but I do know he was rather rude !! Me and my brother once asked him for his autograph and he said why dont you two p*ss off ! There was only us there so it wasnt like he was being mobbed or anything.....shortly after he left city.

Perhaps, considering what renards had to say, he'd had a bad day. :D

Undoubtedly both top keepers but I think that Shilts was allowed to continue playing top level for too long based upon his reputation. His suprising agility was nowhere to be seen in the penalty shoot out against West Germany at Italia 90 thats for sure.

And as for not beating Maradona to the ball in the infamous hand of god incident, that was outrageous.

Doubt I could even start a list of international goalkeepers who never made costly mistakes.

But with the Maradona incident if was the referee who was a disgrace and Maradona who was a cheat.

For Butcher to say he wouldn't shake Maradona's hand was probably more gracious to spit on a hand and then shake.

Had Maradona been a golfer he'd have no credibility left, never mind being feted like some sort of celebrity.

PS: You're right about the penalties and playing too long.

Remember meeting Shilton in Belvoir St in week before 1969 cup final - he was shopping but still had time to talk and sign an autograph. I think he was with Graham Cross might be wrong.

Banks was the first goalie I watched for Leicester and I have to say he just had the edge on Shilton. Those distictive gloves he wore and the arms that seemed to be on stilts. He was at the time the best goalkeeper in the World - nor sure Shilton ever quite made it to that level. He was a great goalie and achieved a great deal in football. Shame it wasn't with City. World cup winner has to be the edge when a Leicester City player, says it all.

Ofcourse Shilton was a Leicester lad and had a lot to follow in Banksie. Difficult to assess really - in any case good to hear he is enjoying life.

Yeah, it's mentioned in his autobiography as I remember. He was in the same side as the drummer from Showaddywaddy.

I spoke to David Nish yesterday bit weird because i was reading That Damm Utd and got to the bit where Cloughie had just signed him, so i went out for a fag and notice his car was parked over the road ( He's a postman) Anyway he walked down the street to my house and got talking to him about Cloughie, Peter Taylor ( not our old manager) and he told me this story about the time they played Juve in the european cup in the semi finals and that they payed the ref and Cloughie went mental. Also said Hinton got a bit of stick for missing a penatly in the home tie.

Nice bloke.

shilton & banks 2 surely great players for us just before my time as i started watching when wallington was between the sticks a very underated goalie did some great saves

Banks, quite simply the greatest ever, i cannot imagine anyone performing better, more consistently, or pulling off the saves he did... ever.

Shilton, A superstar, had he been at any other club, he would be recognised as the best ever..just that we were spoilt by Banks of England.

Almost no superstars or "celebrities" are of interest to me, none would leave me speechless...except perhaps for the one and only Gordon Banks, the only man who's signature and photo i have bought.

there is no substitute for Banksie
