Daggers Posted 7 December 2008 Posted 7 December 2008 ========================= Tell you what though - I find his honest attitude to supporters refreshing. We all know Chairman don't give a flying **** about us, and here's one who clearly states it. Good on him
Floating Fox Posted 7 December 2008 Posted 7 December 2008 No. In all seriousness I fail to see what you're getting at. What actually is your point? Other than a vaguely, deeply routed sentiment for something you've only been aware of for about the last two or three years of your life you've got nothing here to go on.At the end of the day, what does the name of the club really contribute? There was talk, I remember, a good few years back about returning Leicester to the name of Fosse. Why would they have done that? Marketing. Would anyone on here have been in uproar, stopped following the club and left? I doubt it. If, ultimately, football becomes increasingly Americanized in the nearish future and we're all adopting commercial names (ie, I dunno, Walkers' Leiceter City, Emirates Arsenal, etc) are we all really going to mass bocott our clubs because there's marginally different branding on the tickets or club crest? Are we fuck. We'd get used to it like we got used to advert boards, 5.25 kick offs, £20mil signings, administration, pink boots, Beckham culture, shirt sponsorship, excessive merchandising, extortionate catering, Sky, Setanta and who knows what else. We're all responcible for the progresive selling-out of our sport and none of us are in a position to lecture about the great and wonderful traditions of football's golden days. You reap what you sew, and anyone who's sat and marvelled at Los Galacticos, Ronaldhino, Messi, Robinho, Ronaldo and co' has to take in their stride the negative effects of football's steady decline into commerce. This is just another example of the next generation of unhealthy business impact on the sport and you're all just going to have to get used to it. Changing the name from Leicester city to Harchester United? Slightly different from City to Fosse don't you think. I actually wanted us to change the name back to Fosse too. I don't know about you but I would deffinatly stop going. I've virtually stopped going to home games now anyway. I still care about the club but I honestly don't feel in love with them like I did as kid. Yesterday instead of spending £20 going to watch city play what was probably a pretty poor match against an even poorer side, in a dire, shite stadium with no atmopshere, controlled by stewards and the club, I went to watch an FA Vase tie with Coalville Town. A good 40 of us travelled to Barwell (Not far I know), A fiver to get in which is fair enough really. Football is poor quality obviously, but at least you expect that. At least I can stand right next to the pitch without being labelled a hooligan or a scumbag. We won the game, and afterwards the players invited the fans into the changing room to celebrate with the players. Thats what football is all about, all the players appreciated the support we gave all game long, not a clap at the end of a match. I've gone off on a Massive tangent there, but your telling me you'd still go and watch us if we changed our name to Harchester United? Well shame on you.
Suffolk_fox Posted 7 December 2008 Posted 7 December 2008 Him and that shithead.... should fcuk off out of football. Funny you should say that word - when he mentioned an extreme brand I thought of them!
Father Ted Posted 7 December 2008 Posted 7 December 2008 If this man was to drop dead, it would be a complete and utter shame wouldn't it. Do you not realise that football is a business nowadays!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If he was to change it from Chester to Harchester then instead of getting 100 people turn up every week he might get 1000. Football is a business, it changed a very long time ago, live with it!
Fosse Boy Posted 7 December 2008 Posted 7 December 2008 Do you not realise that football is a business nowadays!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No he wouldn't, it doesn't work like that, he tried similar marketing gimmicks when he was chairman of York City and nearly destroyed the club! I'll say it again, but I doubt you'd have the same attitude if something similar were to happen to us. To sell off rights to stadium names and shirt sponsorship is one thing, but to rid the team of its identity for a quick buck is another thing entirely. There is NO WAY I'd continue to to support Leicester if they sold their name.
Daggers Posted 7 December 2008 Posted 7 December 2008 There is NO WAY I'd continue to to support Leicester if they sold their name. That's right - because you would be supporting a team called something like Always Ultra Sanitary Towels Atheletic. There again, that might not be a bad thing - it would certainly help us through any bad periods in the future...

No matter what the name, colour of the kit, stadium name - it all rooted from one place, a little shed in Mr.Gardner's back yard near Fosse Road.

Finnegan Posted 7 December 2008 Posted 7 December 2008 Only responding to Daggers at the moment because I'm in a bit of a rush to play Football Manager and can't be arsed typing, will come back to this later. At the end of the day, Dave, if he's got enough money to invest in better players than the rest of the league have then that's about where it goes. Yes, he has to actually DELIVER on that front - Mandy proved you can't just waltz in with a checkbook and a reputation and make a Premier League team - but if he does then fair play. I know this isn't a man with anything like even 10% of Mr. Gretna or Mr. Hoffenheim's prospects but they're models of what he'll be wanting to achieve in terms of success.

I honestly can't see how they would still be 'City'. The way you're talking about the origins of the Fosse makes your attitude all the more confusing. If the club became the ultimate sell outs and changed their name to make some money then they'd have chucked any notion of heritage and history out of the window. I can't identify with a brand name like Tesco or Walkers in the same way that I can identify with a place (i.e. Leicester). Technically, MK Dons are a continuation of Wimbledon, even though they've forfeited any claim to honours won by Wimbledon FC and have changed the name, club colours and the town they play in. How many supporters of the original Wimbledon follow Franchsie? Virtually none, because they went and set up AFC Wimbledon, a club which they can identify with and which means something to them.
James. Posted 7 December 2008 Posted 7 December 2008 I'm pretty much with Daggers on this. Regardless of its rights and wrongs it's a really shit business plan and it won't work.
Fosse Boy Posted 7 December 2008 Posted 7 December 2008 I'm pretty much with Daggers on this. Regardless of its rights and wrongs it's a really shit business plan and it won't work. Well, you've only to look at his time as chairman of York City to realise that... The man's a moron and has no idea how to make money out of football.
Fez of Mahrez Posted 7 December 2008 Posted 7 December 2008 I would quite happily have a massive argument with anyone who thinks this is even remotely a good idea. I don't for one minute believe Finners actually thinks this is a good idea, he just fancied his daily argument.
Tilley Posted 7 December 2008 Posted 7 December 2008 The guy just wants to earn some paper. Football is a business. He's no worse than the Arabs at Man City or the Yanks at Man Utd etc, they too, couldn't give a shit about the fans. All about the money.

I don't for one minute believe Finners actually thinks this is a good idea, he just fancied his daily argument. Ecumenically I'm not in a position to say whether or not it's a good idea, I can't say I'm well enough researched on corporate business and the income of a football club to say for sure. And I don't like the idea of some dick coming in and pissing all over a club, I've said that from the start. I just think that the "what a cunt, ruining the traditions of Chester FC wah wah!" reasoning for disagreeing is somewhat throwing your head in the sand. That's the way football's going. It's the way the world's going.
James. Posted 7 December 2008 Posted 7 December 2008 Ecumenically Bloody hell, I had to look that one up.
Finnegan Posted 7 December 2008 Posted 7 December 2008 Bloody hell, I had to look that one up. Then I shall stay quiet and not point out that I just used the word. Oops.
Daggers Posted 7 December 2008 Posted 7 December 2008 I don't for one minute believe Finners actually thinks this is a good idea, he just fancied his daily argument. S'good one though - especially when he using internet thesauruses!
Sods Posted 8 December 2008 Posted 8 December 2008 What a joke. Hopefully this dosen't happen and financially Chester find a different owner if their finacial status is poor. It shouldn't happen, they wouldn't just change the name of the club it wouldn't stop there. I Imagine, the kit, badge etc would all change I believe. Why idiots like this think this will market their club better is ubelievable. It wouldn't pull off.
Finnegan Posted 8 December 2008 Posted 8 December 2008 S'good one though - especially when he using internet thesauruses! Pft. I've a perfectly good vocabulary without the use of tools! I just got lost in the moment.

I'm sorry but If I was a chester fan I'd be pretty pissed off with that comment. They get a thousand or so turn up already. If you would support LEICESTER even though they changed their name to attract other people from outside, just so we could go up the leauges, your a moron. I'd rather see us in the Midland Alliance than see us change our name to Harchester.
Hullfox Posted 8 December 2008 Posted 8 December 2008 Despite the fact that he comes a cross as Ched's topic title suggests, I was prepared to give this bloke a chance and take the time to look further into the pros and cons of the whole Chester scenario. However, having read his wiki entry (a lot of which I have cross referenced) I am of the opinion that the man would sell his mother to make a few quid and should not be allowed anywhere a football club. He secured a sponsorship deal with BBC programme Top Gear, which saw him change his name to John Top-Gear through deed poll. He entered the British Touring Car Championship in 2001 and after asking over 800 companies for financial support he persuaded B&Q, the DIY megastore, to join him before the start of the season and also changed his name to John B&Q. He stood as an independent candidate for Tatton in the 2001 general election, which saw him win 0.8% of the electorate with 322 votes Batchelor became the owner and chairman of York City F.C. on 15 March 2002 after buying the club from Douglas Craig.[After taking over the club, he said he had two sites in mind for a new 15,000-seated ground. He revealed an interest in buying ITV Digital in May. He changed the club's name from York City Football Club to York City Soccer Club, in an attempt to appeal to United States markets. Also Batchelor's racing brand was incorporated into other parts of the club, the official badge had a chequered flag brought into it, as did the first team kit, which had a racing style print on one sleeve. He promised that he would buy York's Bootham Crescent ground, give the Supporters Trust 24% of the club's shares and invite two supporters onto the board, but none of these were fulfilled. He was a part of James Derry's bid to buy Mansfield Town in March 2008, but eventually launched his own bid to buy the club. He revealed plans to rename the club "Harchester United", after the fictional team in the Sky series Dream Team He was later revealed to have had a £1.5 million bid for Accrington Stanley turned down by chairman Eric Whalley, which proposed moving a newly formed "Lancashire United" to Leigh and building a 10,000 seater stadium It's now time for the good people of Chester to step up to the plate methinks else league football will be leaving their town.

There should be regulations, and FIFA regulations at that, that prevent such.
