Couldn't

be arsed to

find a topic on this...

Does anybody know of any companies that specialise with ex company car drivers when it comes to motor insurance?

They all seem to say "Based on driving experience" i.e; they will give you some No Claims Bonus if your a 40 year old single bank clerk with a passion for driving slowly .

Basically, I have been a company car driver for 3 and a bit years. What will they need from my employer to evidence this?

Apologies for my complete lack of knowledge on the subject, and my lack of willingness to use google effectively...

You will need a letter from your employer saying you have had no accidents for three years

That isn't a problem. But is that all that they will want?

Probably.

You could also go with the insurance company who have been covering you on the company car for the past 3 years?

I was thinking this.

It would appear that insurers do not wish to cover 21 year old males for a decent motor, even if they are really really really responsible. [/stating the bleeding obvious]

I've always really rated Adrian Flux as a car insurer. They tend to deal with specialist cars more - dunno what they would be like in your situation - but I've thrown some bizarre and unusual car insurance requests at them in the past and they've always had what I consider to be a very 'sensible' attitude. I feel they've judged on an individual basis rather than having the 'standard system' approach that many of the big insurers do who seem completely phased if you don't quite meet their 'perfect profile'.

Adrian Flux seem to be on the verge of almost getting too big for their own good, but generally I've found their staff to be helpful and knowledgeable. Only once did I get someone 'dense' - I took his name, called back later - making sure I didn't get him again - any my query was then dealt with very smoothly.

Anyway... might be worth a try... :dunno:

Adrian Flux benefit from actually underwriting a risk rather than just whacking your details in to a computer etc.

It can work out better or worse depending on your risk profile in the eyes of the standard man.

I know a good motor broker, want the details?

I've managed to convince the 'standard men' at Adrian Flux that I'm lovely... if a little 'alternative' in my insurance requests!!! :P Still, I'm sure I make their mundane jobs more interesting for them. :D

But g'on then... gimme the details. You never know... ;)

I'm getting quotes at the mo. It's costing me around £50 to protect my no claims. Is it worth it?

What does that represent as a portion of the premium as a whole?

NCD is a bit of a fallacy at the moment, no one is rating stuff probably - it's all just pricematch.

Rates will harden though at some point and motor/household are usually the first to move so I'd suggest probably paying the £50.

Just my tuppence though.

I've 8yrs no claims, and not having it takes me under the psychological barrier of £300.

My current insurers want £480! No fecking way.

Only if you plan on staying with the same insurer when it's due again for renewal. Protected bonus wouldn't matter if you were changing insurers - by that i mean take out the protected bonus and make a claim and your no claims discount will remain for the renewal with that insurer. You would still have to disclose the fact that you made a claim when shopping around at renewal and will more than likely be penalised for it with other companies. I wouldn't bother!

Yeah, I know about disclosing it, which I have done. Just phoned the current insurers and told them the news, and they said they could look at my details again to see if they could shave a bit off the quote, but nothing has changed, so they couldn't. It's a real shame, as they were bloody good when some uninsured driver drove into my car last year.

Motor rates seem to be hardening a bit from what I've heard from people getting quotes recently, which is odd as the feeling within the industry seems to be that in an overall shrinking market (not that applicable to motor, I grant you) income (and not necessarily profit) has taken a front seat.

FWIW, I'd protect your no claims, but there again with motor insurance I'm pretty risk averse.
