Hartlepool Player Ratings

Bunn - 7 - Cracking save at the end of the first half to keep it at 1-1. no chance with the peno - He looked like he got something on their 2nd, but it was a hard shot.

Brown, - 6.5 - Looked good at times but then made some Sunday league errors. A mixed game really.

Morrison - 6 - Didn't set the world alight

Mattock - 6.5 - Some good forward runs, not a bad game

Hobbs - 7 - made some brilliant blocks

Berner - 6.5 - Not his best game for us. Looked a blatant dive to win our penalty

Oakley - 6.5 - got an assist and generally played ok. goes missing sometimes.

Dyer - 5.5 - He had a good run and shot 1st half which I honestly thought would give him confidence. He just seems to lack that football brain when he's got defenders in front of him.

Andy King - 6 - Didn't really notice him too much tbh.

Howard - 8 MOTM - Two goals, held the ball up very well and released other players into the game.

Fryatt - 6 - Was a frustrating night for him. He got booked for getting a bit 'hot headed' with a hartlepool defender. I actually thought it was nice to see him get angry!

Cleverley - 6.5 - replaced Dyer on the left but then seemed to have a free role - nearly scored after tricking the and getting his shot off on the right (something dyer seemed incapable of)

Gilbert - 6 - Didn't really do too much, he gets the ball and passes it but he never really makes progress with it.

NP - 6.5 - A point away is ok - We just needed to carry on attacking after we got our peno.

Bunn 7.25 (Looks like a real goalkeeper. Alert, some good shot stopping and super-quick distribution, particularly to Dyer. Decent kick too).

Morrison 5 (Looked vulnerable at right back against livewire opponents. Rightly subbed).

Brown: 6 (Poor first half, rarely found a man but improved a little later. He's another though who insists on lifting the ball most of the time instead of passing it short and to feet).

Hobbs 6 (Got some vital blocks in but suffered like the rest against Hartlepools impish players who passed and moved well)

Mattock 6 (Up against a fast and skillful opponent and had a mixed game).

Oakley - 6 (His assist for the first was important but spoiled some good situations with popor final passes)

King 6 (Started the move which produced Howard's first goal and was okay on the ball but he wasn't able to control midfield either in the air or on the floor and was wel maked whenever he moved forward, which wasn't often).

Dyer - 5.5 (Bunn provided him with good opportunities with some splendid throw-outs but, apart from one run and decent shot he disappointed and was subbed).

Howard 8 (Clear MOTM with two goals, another good break and close range shot which was brilliantly blocked and a generally good all round game).

Fryatt 6.5 (Tried so hard against combative opponents to work a goal but it just wouldn't happen, thanks in part to their goalkeeper).

Cleverley 6.5 (One shot finger-tipped to safety and added a bit of urgency and passing to the side)

Gilbert 5.5 (Hartlepool looked just as dangerous going forward when he replaced Morrison.

PS:

Having got such a late lead we should have won it but paid for our naive belief that we could sit back and defend the final few minutes when it was clear they were very dangerous in attack. And "should have won" doesn't mean we deserved to win. We didn't. In many phases and for quite long spells they gave us a bit of a battering.

It just goes to show how peoples opinion can so differ vastly. Stood on the halfway line I thought Wayne Brown was immense last night and showed a bit of class as he won everything in the air. I agree that Morrison did look a little lost at RB and also that Dyer was poor. Howard was different class up front and deserves motm. Thought their penalty was a bit iffy and having seen it again on sky would have too say 7.2 for artistic merit!

We didn't look 30 points better than Hartlepool but chatting to some of the locals they said it was one of their best displays so far. We did pass it well in spells but a draw was a fair result.

Thought the ref was a complete joke as well. Far too many unnecessary bookings.

Mark Bunn - 6 made some good saves, looked to play the quick ball, good communication.

Michael Morrison - 5 - not the best game i have seen him play better.

Joe Mattock - 4 - made a few good runs, but is not as good he was last season

Jack Hobbs - 6 - not as good as he has been lately, looked shakey

Wayne Brown - 7 - solid in the air, made some crunching tackles, distribution was poor.

Matt Oakley - 6 - Fairly average tonight, some nice touches and set up steve

Lloyd Dyer - 2 - Dreadful, next time he decides to make a slow walk over the pitch, at least make sure you do something in the game

Bruno Berner - 7 - Solid, great touches and looked good back in the middle of midfield

Andy King - 6 - average game by his standards, pick up and unnecessary booking

Matty Fryatt - 6 - looked good, just needs to anticipate the flick ons a bit more, and bag 1 or 2 to get his confidence going agian.

Steve Howard - 9 - IMMENSE

Kerrea Gilbert - 6- looked better than he has in recent weeks

Tom Cleverley - 7 - nice touches, looked dangerous, unlucky not to score.

Bunn - 7 (looked very assured and gave me confidence unlike other 'keepers)

Morrison - 6 (out of position, didn't think he looked that bad in all honesty. Still the HOOOF)

Brown - 5 (ox in the air - lol at the slap noise on his headers - but distribution and technique looked woeful)

Hobbs - 6 (sort of 'meh' performance. Did what he had to, no more, no less)

Mattock - 2 (abysmal imo. Skinned time and time again, seemed out of position all the time. Sure he was at fault for their second? Were it not for a vicious tackle and a good header, he'd have had either a 0 or 1 from me)

Moakley - 5 (never seen him play well in a midweek awayer; average at best)

Berner - 5 (tried to get forward, even attempted to be creative, but just couldn't produce)

King! - (again, very 'meh'. Can spread the ball but in a team that lacked creation, he didn't stand out. Passionate but largely anonymous)

Lloyd - 3 (jaded; useless; found out. Lacks a couple of yards of pace, doesn't have the same drive or hunger. Needs time off)

Fryatt - 6 (ran a lot, worked hard, created a couple of chances, maybe should have scored. Bottled the pen. Ok performance)

Howard - 9 (epic. Heroic. God-like. His celebration last night will live long in the memory. Immense.)

Kerrea - 5 (caught out of position a couple of times but looked to support the attack. Doesn't seem to want to drive at defenders though)

Cleverly - 7 (quality first touch, vision, skill, creativity. He looked hungry and wants to do things. Should start in Lloyd's place on Sat)

Bunny - 7.5 He's only here for a month. Or it looks as though he'll be recalled at 24 hrs notice at some point so I'm not going to love him. I am not. I really am not. I love Bunny.

Michael Morrison - 5 is not a right back. He doesn't have the pace, the crossing ability or the haircut.

Joe Mattock - 4 got skinned more time than a hutch of teatime bunnies

Jack Hobbs - 6.5 shaky moments but he just needs to form an understanding with Brown

Wayne Brown - 8 unit. The most impressive thing is his mouth - he's going to whip the kids into shape.

Matt Oakley - 7.5 worked tirelessly and (really noticeably) was doing that 'calling the shots' captain thing which was required. Suffered because his play wasn't built on by the overlapping defenders or the wing men who simply triangulated balls back to him rather than whipping them across the box. All bar one corner was sweet.

Lloyd Dyer - 5 please Pearson, rest the lad. We have nothing to lose by playing Gradel on the left this Saturday and plenty to gain.

Bruno Berner - 7.5 Really solid in centre-mid but didn't make a good left-wing option when he swapped out to the flank.

Andy King - 7 Really pushed hard and battled, was never allowed the time to shine.

Matty Fryatt - 7 really manned-up tonight, mustled & hustled, held up play and made some glorious turns. Despite having someone sitting on him for the entire match he still made a strong impression...and I loved his passion for the fight

Steve Howard - 9 super Steve. What more can a player do on the field? Traps, holds, passes, scores and stares like a bastard.

Kerrea Gilbert - 6 better pace and positional sense at right back, offered nothing extra going forward

Tom Cleverley - 6 not the Walsall player I bought a tube of lube for, didn't impress on the left and then made small inroads on the right. I'd like to see him have a free role on Saturday.

Bunn - 7 - competant debut, sound kicking and no chance with the goals

Morrison - 6 - filled in ok i thought

Hobbs - 7

Brown - 7 solid in the air, not too sure on the ground

Mattock - 4 - Its beyond a joke now that Powell and Berner havn't replaced him for good.

Oakley - 6

Berner - 7

King - 6 - Again pretty anonymous but always get that feeling he'll pop up with a vital goal, really liked him this season.

Dyer - 4 - Continued disappointment from a player who just 3 months ago was unstoppable.

Steve - 9 MOTM - The guy loves it.

Fryatt - 7 - Better energy and few decent efforts.

Good shout about Fryatt, Daggers!

I thought he looked really up for it, I'm upgrading his rating to a 7.

I here by commit an upgrade from 6 - 6.5 for Fryatt following review.
