Ultra Posted 20 February 2009 Posted 20 February 2009 From the Liverpool Echo.. POLICE have postponed an Everton home game because the BNP will be campaigning in Liverpool. The Blues were due to take on Stoke City at Goodison Park in a Premier League clash at 3pm on Saturday, March 14. But the BNP are due in town leafleting the city centre in the run-up to the European elections in June. Merseyside police do not have enough officers to cover both events, so they asked the Premier League to put back the match 24 hours. It will now kick off at 3pm on Sunday, March 15. Blues fans reacted with fury to the move, having being told about the change only last week. Merseyside police were informed about the BNP plan in mid January. The BNP march is expected to attract anti-racism campaigners, and the police said they have to have a sizeable presence to keep the peace. There were also private concerns in the force about away fans mixing with the march because Stoke has nine BNP councillors. Ian McDonald, from Everton Independent Blues, said: “Why, at such short notice, have we been shifted out for the BNP? Goodison Park is full of people of every race, creed and colour – all with a love of Everton. “That is the type of situation the BNP will be protesting about. “I know 100 Blues from the Isle of Man who have had to cancel their trip because the match has been moved, and there’ll be hundreds more across the country in the same situation.” Simon Darby, BNP deputy leader, said: “It is a massive over-reaction. Why can these two events not co-exist? “It is an insult not only to Everton fans but also to us. It is a ridiculous thing to do.” But Chief Supt Steve Watson said: “The prime concern of Merseyside police is the safety of the visitors to the city centre and local residents. “We will facilitate lawful campaigning in such a way as to minimise any risk of harm or disruption to the public or local businesses. “There were several events scheduled for Saturday, March 14 which would have required intensive policing. “If they had all taken place at the same time it would have affected the ability to police those events effectively.” EFC head of communications Ian Ross said: “It is a matter of public safety so we understand the police’s predicament. “However we don’t like rescheduling games at such short notice and this will certainly lead to a number of supporters being inconvenienced.” Everton websites have also condemned the actions of their local plod. http://nsno.co.uk/e107_plugins/forum/forum...ic.php?677936.0 http://www.grandoldteam.com/forum/everton-...day-sunday.html While undoubtedly some of Stoke's more seedier elements will be encouraged to make a weekend of it on Merseyside, the BNP's plans have clearly backfired. Their support in the area was already minuscule and this stunt will only damage it still further.
Jordan Posted 21 February 2009 Posted 21 February 2009 Oh dear... Could they not have just forced a postponement of the BNP march instead? What is wrong with this world?
Head Honcho Posted 21 February 2009 Posted 21 February 2009 I'm not too sure how this is bad news for the BNP All publicity is good publicity and a few pissed off Evertonians isn't going to damage their reputation anymore then it already is!
purpleronnie Posted 21 February 2009 Posted 21 February 2009 I'm sure the BNP will be over policed as would the match.
Daggers Posted 21 February 2009 Posted 21 February 2009 I'm not too sure how this is bad news for the BNP Me too.
Zingari Posted 21 February 2009 Posted 21 February 2009 football cannot stand in the way of democratic rights
Thracian Posted 21 February 2009 Posted 21 February 2009 From the Liverpool Echo..Everton websites have also condemned the actions of their local plod. http://nsno.co.uk/e107_plugins/forum/forum...ic.php?677936.0 http://www.grandoldteam.com/forum/everton-...day-sunday.html While undoubtedly some of Stoke's more seedier elements will be encouraged to make a weekend of it on Merseyside, the BNP's plans have clearly backfired. Their support in the area was already minuscule and this stunt will only damage it still further. This won't please you but I have taken the trouble to see if the popular view you refer to is true or whether there is in fact, another side of the story. And low and behold I find that the BNP paints quite a different picture...one which, despite your attack, you have not even bothered recording. Cos according to he BNP, the real bogeyman is not them but a planned action by a communist group, many Labour supporters being closet communists of course. Oh yes, and those less-than-official labour supporters are regularly engaged in actions aimed at silencing or at least smothering the voice of the BNP. http://bnp.org.uk/2009/02/liverpool-police...munist-threats/ None of that would much matter except that, only today, a clearly worried Peter Hain constantly repeated the words "racist" and "fascist" on Radio 4 today when referring to the rise of the BNP which is a bit rich coming only days after Labour announced that they were to end their discrimination against white people applying for Police jobs. That some 10 years after the discrimination started. Their discrimination. Their racism. Talk about the pot calling the kettle... And why are they ending their discrimination now? Change of thinking? Not a bit. Two reasons. a) Impending elections including European elections. b) The shock of recent trades union action over the Total jobs scandal. Labour cannot afford to lose the support of the Trades Unions but it is clear that many trades unionists believe that Gordon Brown's comment about "British Jobs for British workers" is all so much insincere rhetorical bullshit. And statistics showing the shocking and indefensible extent of discrimination against white British job hunters only confirms as much. Little wonder then that some of those trades union members are seemingly turning to the one political party which is truly pledged to the "British jobs for British people" ideal, the BNP. And considering that Liverpool has been a traditional hotbed of trades unionsim I can't imagine why support for the BNP there should be minimal. Particularly as so many of their jobs have gone or are under threat. Support for the BNP will only wane again not through silencing the BNP voice, but when Labour starts doing what it was always supposed to do - stand up for British workers, British jobs, British industry and the welfare of British people.
