The People's Hero Posted 25 February 2009 Posted 25 February 2009 I've been a bit of a plonker and left my log book at home while my car is serviced. I might even have lost it in a move 6 months ish ago. What's the drill? If I'm not going to get the posh FORD MAIN DEALERSHIP SERVICE stamp, I've been a mug taking it there, right? £190 poorer and no stamp to show for it? Or will they give me some paperwork? Ta.

I'm sure they'll stamp it anytime as long as you have an invoice.

If you are using main dealers they should have a full record of your service history on their system, you may even be able to get them to sort out a new service log book if the old one is lost. If you find the log book they'll definitely stamp it later if you take it in. I noticed that my log book was missing a stamp and took it into the local dealership, they sent it to the dealer who did the service for the stamp to be added and mailed it back to me.

Sweet. I'll chill out then. I hope they don't go searching through my boot for it - there is a right load of crap in there. How embarrassing. I didn't even remove my CDs. That's pretty trusting.
The People's Hero Posted 25 February 2009 Author Posted 25 February 2009 £190 for a service? Blimey! Plus all the sh it that's wrong with it. Not that I can be arsed to get it done elsewhere. It'll be £250+ time I've picked the fu cker up. Then she'll want new tyres soon....

Will prob do the wipers myself.
Bellend Sebastian Posted 25 February 2009 Posted 25 February 2009 I've today been quoted £229 for a service from the local Vauxhall main dealer for the mighty Astra. That's if there's nothing wrong with it. I've decided they can piss off and I'll take it to my usual independent. Even if they're as expensive, I'd rather give them the money

The People's Hero Posted 25 February 2009 Author Posted 25 February 2009 Cars eh? Good job I'm not paying rent at the minute. My holiday at the end of April is getting less and less luxurious by the day.

The People's Hero Posted 25 February 2009 Author Posted 25 February 2009 Goodbye Maldives. Hello Sharm.

The People's Hero Posted 27 February 2009 Author Posted 27 February 2009 Ah well. Feels like something is wrong now. Twice on my fairly sedate (ish) well, perhaps not, drive to work Traction Control or whatever it's called kicked in.

It wasn't on that sharp bend where you freely admitted trying to push it to the limit was it, per chance?
cisono Posted 27 February 2009 Posted 27 February 2009 My "new" car, the Toyota Avensis, turns out to be having the same problem as my old car, i.e. engine management light coming on, and, in the case of the Avensis, staying on for good. I should in theory take it in to the Toyota garage down the road, but... is there any point? My mechanic told me that locating the fault is like finding a needle in a haystack. I am scared of huge bills where they charge you hundreds of pounds because the investigation took days Frankly, I am tempted to drive around with that yellow light on, I'm so used to it!

Diagnosis would often depend on the quality of the equipment - a main dealer hsould be able to do a code read and have a fair chance from there of knowing what it is. Without the £k's worth of up to date equipment one man band's/local garages often struggle

Stick a bit of black tape across the dashboard then act like nothing's wrong. Warning light? Er, I see no light.....

Without the £k's worth of up to date equipment one man band's/local garages often struggle "My" usual mechanic has readers with many different keys, though the fit is less than optimal. I was there while he was doing this reading. He did find a couple of readings that were "off" (like the lambda sensor) but this only restricted his analysis somewhat (not enough for my taste). But do main dealers charge much more? My mechanic charges £40/hour. He used to charge £20/hour then his son went to college and he bumped up to the price to £40. I think that's fine if you are super efficient and sort out stuff properly in a timely fashion, but if not... not on really. Stick a bit of black tape across the dashboard then act like nothing's wrong. Warning light? Er, I see no light..... Might just have to do that
