Finnegan Posted 22 March 2009 Posted 22 March 2009 Why? Nearly every player that does it has the ability to put the ball out of a keeper's reach anyway. Why risk making yourself look like a massive twat? If I were a manager I would absolutely ban any of my players from doing it. Utter, utter morons.

The worst thing to do when taking a penalty though, is changing your mind on where you're going.
syston_fox Posted 22 March 2009 Posted 22 March 2009 Wasn't Robinho's penalty a foul anyway? Thought you were allowed to stammer your run up but not stop completely like he did.

Christiano Ronaldo is the worst for this, he could just wham it so hard in the top corner nobody'd touch it and have a way better success rate. Didn't Hume do it with "that" penalty at the end of last year too?
Bert Posted 22 March 2009 Posted 22 March 2009 Wasn't Robinho's penalty a foul anyway? Thought you were allowed to stammer your run up but not stop completely like he did. Fulop was 2 yards off his line when Robinho took it anyway, so maybe it should've been a re-take. Absolutely. Just watched Robinho's which inspired the post, utterly dreadful. Christiano Ronaldo is the worst for this, he could just wham it so hard in the top corner nobody'd touch it and have a way better success rate. Didn't Hume do it with "that" penalty at the end of last year too? Yeah he did. Ronaldo - Did it in Moscow - Missed. Gerrard had two penalties today, both times he placed the ball on the spot, steadied himself, decided where he was going and sent the keeper the wrong way both times. Even if the keeper had've guessed right, it would've took a world class save to save them. The perfect example of how to take penalties.
Finnegan Posted 22 March 2009 Author Posted 22 March 2009 Agreed. As much as I dislike him as a player Lampard seems to do the same. Picks a spot in the bottom corner - thud.
Edmund Posted 22 March 2009 Posted 22 March 2009 Agreed. As much as I dislike him as a player Lampard seems to do the same. Picks a spot in the bottom corner - thud. Remember Jimmy Floyd's penalties. The little skip with a rocket into the net. Never understood how he got so much power from such a small run up. I agree penalties should be straightforward and into the corner with maximum force but did anyone see that penalty against man city in the uefa cup on thursday from the matey on the danish team. Brilliant penalty had brazilian stylee written all over. That was pure skill.
Edmund Posted 22 March 2009 Posted 22 March 2009 Couldn't find a peno but this free kick shows the little run up with maximum power. That Pires and Henry penalty against Man City a few years ago springs to mind - had it worked then some people in the media would have been raving about it but instead two of the best players in the country at that time were reduced to looking like schoolboys. Penalties are such a simple concept that I don't get why the best players in the world try and complex things when 95% of the time they will score. If you aren't confident that you can score a penalty normally then you shouldn't be taking it in the first place.

But, there is a very high percentage of those sort of penalties, going wrong, whether the keeper saves it, or the ball goes over/wide. It might look good, but if it fails, you will look a right idiot. I must say though, to take a penalty like that, you must have a lot of courage.

I do agree with both of you but you can't help but admire penalties like the the one mentioned but like stated when it goes wrong it looks terrible and is annoying especially if the goal is the difference between a win or not.
Joe. Posted 22 March 2009 Posted 22 March 2009 Robinho's was a pretty laughable effort; he could see that Fulop wasn't going to dive the wrong way but still stuck the ball straight at him. I can kind of see why some players do it; to try and see where the keeper goes and all that, but like others have said penalties are so un-complicated it's not necessary.

I was watching the shoot-out. My reaction was "Wow, what a peno!" Imagine if said player would have done that, when he needed to score to keep the tie alive, and missed because he was trying to be fancy? The consequences would've been far worse if this was the case.
TrickyTrev Posted 23 March 2009 Posted 23 March 2009 Disagree. A really good penalty taker has an uneven or no run up so it is not obvious when they are going to hit the ball, they wait for the keeper to go and they slide it in the other corner. I actually think Ashley Cole is one of the best penalty takers I have seen, does eaxactly what I have described every time. Ofcourse the key to taking them like this is having the confidence to belt the ball pretty near the corner if the keeper just stands there, if the keeper choses not to go early he shouldn't have a chance. This is what makes the skill difficult, you have to be able to change your mind in a split second and execute a decent shot whilst looking at the keeper.
Finnegan Posted 23 March 2009 Author Posted 23 March 2009 There's a difference between courage and composure, though. If you aren't slightly nervous taking a penalty then that's just as bad as if you were shitting yourself. End of the day I think Syston was bang on, really. It's a simple concept - put the ball in the net. Overcomplicating it is a serious issue. Like I said, if I were a manager and if I do my coaching badges I would absolutely murder any player who attempted any funny business taking a penalty. It'd be drummed in on the training ground that they're not even to bother. Stupid.

Bert Posted 23 March 2009 Posted 23 March 2009 It's very rare that you'll see Yakubu or Danny Murphy miss a penalty too.
Alexikokopops Posted 23 March 2009 Posted 23 March 2009 It's very rare that you'll see Yakubu or Danny Murphy miss a penalty too. I seem to remember Yakubu missing a fair few in recent times before he got injured. I think so anyway. I've always had the impression that he's not that good a penalty taker.

I've always had the impression that he's not that good a penalty taker. I never said that he hadn't missed any. I've always rated him as one of the best penalty takers around, 9 times out of 10, he'll score them.
TrickyTrev Posted 23 March 2009 Posted 23 March 2009 It's very rare that you'll see Yakubu or Danny Murphy miss a penalty too. Danny Murphy is very good, always puts it in the top corner, which is the next best option after a dummie. If you just go low into a corner you have very little margain for error, unless you are hitting the side netting at a good speed then the keeper should get to it given he has gone the right way.
lcfc_jme Posted 23 March 2009 Posted 23 March 2009 Robinho's penalty yesterday was absolutely atrocious. There's a reason players like Shearer in his day and Gerrard/Lampard/Murphy these days rarely if ever miss penalties. No ****ing about, get the ball on the spot and belt it home. If Robinho took penalties like Gerrard did on Sunday, they'd be near-on unsaveable.
