Tommy G Posted 15 May 2009 Posted 15 May 2009 Driving home last night and they went. Booked it in at Kwik Fit tomorrow morning. Any idea how much this will burn a hole in my wallet? I only potter around in a Ford Fiesta so it's not exactly a Porsche, should I be worried if it's over £100? Never dealt with brake pads before, so any mechanics or knowitalls out there in this field would be brill. Cheers, Tommy G

Cheers, Tommy G Back in my punto days, (similar sized car), I havd a rear set that cost me £100. That was froma place behind B&Q near Greens. It gets expensive if you need the disks too I believe. But I'm no mechanic..

Joe. Posted 15 May 2009 Posted 15 May 2009 Yeah I think you'll be looking at over £100 I think. I'm pretty sure my mate got his done for £120, not totally sure though.

Cheers, Tommy G Rear or front, just the pads\shoe's alone will cost between £25 - £35 per set (set being 2 for either front or rear). If your front discs need replacing, then they cost around £30 - £40 for pair!! You got to take into consideration the labour cost!! So for the lot, your probably looking at £200, that's all shoes, pads and disk, for either front or rear, your looking around £70 - £100!! This is going on how much it cost me and month ago!!
Sir Fynwy Posted 15 May 2009 Posted 15 May 2009 Changing brake pads is one of the easiest and cheapest DIY jobs you can do on your car, about 1 hour with a jack and a few basic tools will see it done for £25. Kwik fit will probably try and sting you for new discs as well.

Wherever you got it done sounds dirt cheap??

Sorry bud, but those prices are an estimate, brakes pads etc are very easy to change and the whole lot can be done less then an hour, I got mine done by someone I know who is training to be a mechanic and brought the pads etc he just put them on for abit of beer money!! But it's usually abit cheaper if you go to a private garage\mechanic, unfortunately I don't know any, but i'm sure if you ask the forum they can give you some guidance!!!

I wouldn't trust anywhere like Kwik Fit or Formula 1 as they will undoubtedly find something else wrong with your car and do the work without your consent, and refuse to hand you back the old parts so that you can go and get a second opinion.
lou Posted 15 May 2009 Posted 15 May 2009 Absolutely dont go to Kwik fit! If you do they will try and tell you the disks need changing, they probably dont though. Id ask around for someone who knows a private mech or just a person whos good with cars. Like others have said its not a hard job
welck12 Posted 15 May 2009 Posted 15 May 2009 I would offer my services to do it for a few beers, but i dont think you'd fancy the drive. There must be someone on here near you who could lend a hand
Tommy G Posted 15 May 2009 Author Posted 15 May 2009 I can see myself getting fleeced for about 4 million pounds here
Dr The Singh Posted 15 May 2009 Posted 15 May 2009 I can see myself getting fleeced for about 4 million pounds here True story, a guy who works at our place went to kwik fit with a flat tyre, they 'pursuaded' him that he needed all the tyres changing, tracking, and wheel balancing!!! Instead of costing him just £10 for a puncture repair it cost him, £350!! The following day his dad went back and complained, he got the balancing and tracking refunded but unfortunately too late for the tyres!!
Tommy G Posted 15 May 2009 Author Posted 15 May 2009 my mate got his done the other day for £20 Bike brake pads more like at that price
samlcfc Posted 15 May 2009 Posted 15 May 2009 Bike brake pads more like at that price he only had the labour cost taken off
Legend_in_blue Posted 15 May 2009 Posted 15 May 2009 Go to Aylestone Test and Tune on Aylestone Road. They are extremely good and you'll be happy with the service there.

Looking at a few prices on the internet you should be looking at only about £20 for cheap fronts, £35 for a set of good brand ones. Should be about 30 mins labour if its just the fronts, so say £25-30 labour, it should stay in the double figures. KwikFit however, will absolutely rape you, I'd be very suprised if it wasn't 3 figures.
Tommy G Posted 18 May 2009 Author Posted 18 May 2009 Got two new pads and had to have two new disks as the previous pads were so bad they had fu**ed the diks and marked them. Cost me £181, raped

Stay away from them. I recently needed a new exhaust fitting and I shopped around. All were roughly the same price. With the nature of my job and travelling once a week, I plumped with F1 as they were open till 5.30pm and right near home. They changed the exhaust but fitted so shoddly, it sounded like a F1 exhaust. Went back in the fella spent just as long messing about it and finally it's ok now. Brake Pads on mine cost £150 on my old Corsa. That was the full shebang and thanks to a family friend, at the time his partner was pregnant. So in the interest of goodwill, I happily paid that amount. Now car electrics, that can be a tad pissey offy. <_< I swear the car leccy's made some rubbish up (fuse behind the cowlin had gone) but charged me nothing. So either they were happy to charge nought with me being a pass customer or because 2 months ago when originally doing the job they cacked up. Either way, all these events in the past two months have made me consider learning about cars during the summer when Uni's done. So I get some basic knowledge and can do the simple stuff such as a service etc.

Cost me £181, raped I'd be willing to bet there was no need to fit new disks, you've been done by the easiest trick in the book. All the quick fit places automatically tell you to fit new disks whenever you go in for pads. Absolute bandits. 'you can't get thicker than a kwik fit fooker'.
Red Leicester Posted 18 May 2009 Posted 18 May 2009 I wouldn't trust anywhere like Kwik Fit Absolutely dont go to Kwik fit! Would this be the very same Kwik Fit who stole my wife's spare wheel?
