Matt Posted 4 June 2009 Posted 4 June 2009 Wigan have been given permission by Swansea to speak to Roberto Martínez with a view to appointing him as their new manager.A compensation deal has been agreed between the clubs for the Spaniard, who has been in charge of Swansea for three years and led the club to eighth in the Championship last season. "Swansea City can confirm that they have reluctantly given Wigan Athletic permission to speak to Roberto Martínez about the vacant manager's position at the JJB Stadium," read a statement on the Swansea website. "Permission was granted when Wigan's offer of compensation reached the appropriate level set by Swansea City, and was only given when taking into account Roberto's own wishes." Dave Whelan, the Wigan chairman, identified Martínez, who played for Wigan between 1995-2001, as his No1 choice after Steve Bruce made it clear he wanted to leave the club and join Sunderland, a move that was finalised yesterday.

A good signing for Wigan, especially if he takes one or two of his Spanish players with him. Swansea could struggle next season if that happens though, Martinez has been very much the driving force behind their recent success.
Finnegan Posted 4 June 2009 Posted 4 June 2009 Bit disappointed really. I think he'd have had a really good shot at taking Swansea up this season, certainlly getting them into the play-offs. He's got a good eye for a bargain, has good contacts in Spain (look at the nationality of half the Jacks squad ) and is tactically sound. I think Swansea are a well run club of fair size and I don't think they'll drop back into League One without him - but it's a blow and it'll really hurt their prospects of going higher. Shame. Good for Wigan, in my opinion.

Wigan realize their limitations and their size so they won't have silly expectations. I won't be surprised if they have a Fulham-esque season next season.

They were top-flight footballers who played for massive clubs who only got into Premiership management by reputation. Martinez is a journeyma who's earned respect nationally for an exceptional job done in developing the fortunes and the stature of a middle-of-the-road Welsh club. Wigan are shit. I'd much rather see Swansea in the Prem than that sack of blue and white arse-milk. Possible they still will, really. It depends who they appoint. Martinez was good but his work was really a naturally continuation of what Jackett achieved there. It's a good club, it's a sensible and fairly well run club and I think they'll continue to improve.
