Squad Numbers

Leicester boss Nigel Pearson has challenged those players not allocated a squad number for the forthcoming season to prove their worth.

Midfielders Astrit Ajdarevic, Levi Porter and James Wesolowski and striker DJ Campbell were among the omissions.

Ajdarevic being overlooked could be seen as a surprise after the former Liverpool youth player signed a one-year deal at the Walkers Stadium following a successful loan spell last season.

Campbell has been heavily linked with a move away from the club while Porter and Wesolowski have failed to force their way into Pearson's plans after long-term injuries.

Pearson said: "The onus is on the players not in the list. If they progress and make it into the first-team, they will get a squad number."

Not the way i learnt how to go about things on my level 3 NVQ in management/team building exercise

That's the same qualification Martin Allen took to claim himself as a football manager rather than than FA or UEFA badges.

I Find it really odd that Astrit is with us for the tail end of last season on loan, then trial at the start of pre-season, NP signs him up, and then doesn't give him a squad number? Strange signing. Unless he can see the kid has undoubted talent but isn't showing it so NP is trying to give him a kick up the arse in the hope of getting him to perform!?

Pure guesswork, but you could be spot on with this. I recall he was reported as making a snotty comment about not getting the opportunities he deserved at Liverpool. When he came on as sub here last season, he clearly had some ability at passing and holding the ball, but seemed slow-moving. He also seemed a bit full of himself for someone who didn't look a natural starter at L1 level, never mind the hectic midfield battles in the Championship.

Maybe Pearson is telling him he needs to sharpen up his performance and his attitude before his undoubted skills merit consideration for 1st team duty.
