I must spend Leicester City's cash wisely – Nigel Pearson

Nigel Pearson knows he has a responsibility to spend Leicester City chairman Milan Mandaric's (and our) money wisely in the transfer market.

Manager Pearson is determined to add more quality to City's squad for their return to the Championship.

But he accepts that the club may miss potential targets if the price is not right, as Mandaric warned in Friday's Leicester Mercury.

Pearson says Mandaric is again being "very supportive" as the club look to bring in some new faces for the Championship campaign which starts on August 8.

He said: "I've had some good meetings with Milan but it is important to remember there are not unlimited funds available and the money is coming directly from the chairman (and the fans), so I have to spend it wisely."

And Pearson added that, when the asking price exceeds his valuation, he looks elsewhere – which was the case with Swindon target Simon Cox, who was the subject of a bid from City.

Pearson said: "We identify players and we have our own valuation on them.

"But there is a limit to where we are going to go and, when you reach that, you have to move on and look elsewhere as we won't be held to ransom.

"You do as much as you can to eliminate the risks and I feel a moral responsibility to do the homework on any potential signings. Sometimes we will be successful and sometimes we will not be."

Pearson said he is working hard to build on the success of last season's League One title triumph by adding more quality to the City squad, but has set no time-frames.

He said: "I've discussed a few things with the chairman and we will be looking to develop them over the next couple of weeks.

"But I've not put on any time conditions as there are still a number of weeks before the transfer-window closes. I'm pleased with the squad we already have here and now it's about getting the right people in."

Pearson said latest recruits Chris Weale, Dany N'Guessan, Astrit Adjarevic and Robbie Neilson all demonstrated during the first few days of pre-season training that they have the right focus and drive to make a success of their time at City.

Pearson, who will not comment on any speculation about his intended targets, said: "Our recruitment policy will remain the same – they have to be the right players technically and have to be the right sort of people too."

The City manager has also confirmed that City will return to the training camp in Slovenia which formed part of last season's build-up.

They will fly out following the friendly "double-header" against Loughborough Dynamo and Tamworth on Saturday, their first games of the pre-season.

In that case I'd trust Nidge with my life savings.... He offers good rates of interest....

lol Nice one and I couldn't agree more.

Makes more sense that identifying a player and paying whatever is required to sign them. Cox was well overpriced at £2.5M. Would be far less risky to sign 5 players at £500k.

Not quite as simple as that though is it. Swindon may have thought his bollocks were heavier than they actually are but if you start signing players that are only paid a fifth of the wages and signing-on-fees that a player like Cox would have been, you're going to probably have some pretty shit players.

By your logic then, Dudley J is better than Oakley.

He needs to grow a pair of balls. Money makes the world go round baby. If I was in charge I would bankrupt the shit out of the club but at the same time send the club back to the premiership. In business you need to lose money to make money.
